DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wagon-accessible front gate

You could also place some doors adjacent to a drawbridge for the trolls to smash through if space isn't a critical issue at the entrance.

I don't know anything about this community save, but if no one's playing it, I'll take a turn.

Until someone confirms an active run at it, I think it's safe to assume the play is up for grabs.  Turns have been going on a "first drunk - first turn" basis

General Discussion / Towel Usage
« on: April 03, 2024, 02:34:24 pm »
The many uses for a towel:

  • Drying things off
  • Clothing substitute
  • Pillow
  • Blanket
  • Signal flag
  • Tourniquet
  • Wound dressing
  • Automotive (etc.) cleaning rag
  • Shoes (not great, but more protective than barefoot)
  • Fire starter
  • Fire quencher (if wetted)
  • Wind break
  • Sail (better than nothing)
  • Window privacy curtain
  • Dust mask (I've done it, it works)
  • Drop-cloth for painting / construction
  • Packing bindle
  • Toilet paper (non-flushable)
  • Insulation
  • Whip
  • Oven-mitt / Trivet
  • Shin pads
  • Door stopper
  • Baby swaddle
  • Bib
  • Hat / Ear warmer
  • Seat cushion
  • Shower curtain
  • Pet bed
  • Scarf
  • Cooking apron
  • Blindfold
  • Napkin
  • Water filter (for large debris)
  • Knee pad
  • Wash cloth
  • Table cloth
  • Sun-shade
  • Trebuchet projectile holder
  • Torch fabric
  • Door-flap
  • Rope
  • Draft stopper / smell barrier
  • Padding for low hanging pipes
  • Cape
  • Saddle blanket
  • Landscaping fabric

I'm sure I've missed some.

And the numbered list doesn't seem to go higher than 10
Edit: Numbered lists seem to work now, there was some strange formatting glitch that truncated the 1st digit for me

General Discussion / Re: Israel-Gaza/Palestine war thread
« on: March 26, 2024, 04:32:52 am »
One big takeaway from this thread is that there are very strong views on both sides, and it will be impossible for the two to ever find agreement.  It is an extremely divisive topic.  So, for example, when it comes up in workplace environments, and people start trying to take 1 side or the other - expect unceasing heated debates at a minimum.  And it's probably best to stay out of the fray at the local level of politics and instesd focus on things we actually can make a difference on.  For a local municipality to take either position necessarily alienates and insults those who support the opposite view.  And for what benefit will that have?  Virtue signaling and moral victory points with certain groups?  But at the cost of disharmony and increased anger while alienating others.

It's incredibly helpful to see both opposing views really articulated and expounded.  And there are higher tiers if government where making our concerns known would be beneficial.

I'm just seeing lately how on the lowest levels of local governing, and in the workplace, it is a counterproductive issue for organizations to take a stand on.

Might there be some common ground that everyone can support, even if it doesn't go far enough for everyone to be 100% satisfied?

War is evil, and we should prevent war.  Where war has broken out, it would be preferable for a lasting peace to quickly be the end of it and with minimal harm along the way.

Or are there those who simply prefer there to be war, death, destruction, and suffering for efernity?

I would think that our cerebral reaction time would be godlike in a low FPS world.  Like how the flash must see things, only without the corresponding quickness.  Surely our ability to catch things and other skills of that nature would now be off the charts?

It's a bit of a self fulfilling prophesy: that a 3rd party vote is a wasted vote.  I'd be curious to see how many people actually do prefer a 3rd party candidate, yet vote only D or R because of that view.  Especially in this Trump-Biden rematch, I'd rather see just about anyone else.

The Norman Finkelstein - Steven Bonnell debate hosted by Lex Fridman was interesting.  I think it perfectly illustrates the current state of the situation in Israel/Gaza.  Though I would recommend against watching it if you have high blood pressure.  My biggest takeaway from the whole debate is that listening seems to be a lost art.  And people absolutely cannot be made to listen.  It is something we can only do ourselves.  At best, maybe we can inspire someone else to listen a bit more because of our example, but definitely don't count on that.

Getting called in to work in the middle of the night, chugging an energy drink, and then getting a call saying, "Oops, meant to call in the other crew, don't bother coming in."

It's a wide bucket with various meanings to various non-democrats.  It essentially means not spending money we don't have.  As opposed to borrowing money to spend on things.

You would thus expect the debt to reduce in the hands of Republican administrations then if they were “fiscally responsible”.

It doesn’t.

Well, that's likely a big reason why so many people nowadays support neither democrats nor republicans.

The main divide between democrats and non-democrats seems to be about spending.  Democrats argue for spending all our money and the money of our grandchildren on (insert noun here).  The fiscally responsible person is therefore inclined to choose non-democrat.

I think you're grossly underestimating just how viral ideas were in pre-industrial times.

Heresy was typically the product of one individual, and its implications were felt much further afield than its place of origin.

Our sources for commoner 'viral' ideas are more sporadic, but there is evidence that commoners (see: Wat Tyler) could shape the zeitgeist of their nation.

Considering how nearly all of Europe didn't know that North America even existed for most of the last 2000 years, I find it hard to imagine how any idea would be able to be conveyed around the globe.  Today, that can happen in minutes.  While you are correct in assuming that I am no historical scholar, this still seems like a significant difference to me.

It seems like your position is more relevant to regional ideas spreading, in which case, I agree with you.  It's the global impact that is different now.

Also there's the obvious issue with your statement - - - what constitutes 'good' and what 'bad,' and why should you get to decide?

With regard to good and bad, I specifically refrained from making any moral judgements about anything.  I was merely implying that good and bad exist;  And that ideas with each of those connotations spread faster in the digital internet age than they did in the bronze age; And that the world is much more easily perturbed because of such powers held in the hands of anyone with a smartphone.

The isolated nature of pre-industrial communication helped to contain bad, yet convincing ideas, keeping them from spreading to the whole world.  Today, 1 person can say something that can impact just about everyone in a matter of minutes.  The same is true for good, yet unconvincing ideas too.  But sadly, there doesn't seem to exist many ideas that are both good and widely compelling.  I'm mildly upset about this.

If we still have the "Tribute Scar" dagger, maybe we could put it to use opening some tribute wounds on the mass of cats?  If we leave just enough blood in them to live, they might even lay there, injured and immobile, freeing up the FPS, yet still eventually recover, and develop scars, while we abscond with a fierce blood-golem made of their involuntary blood trubute?

Could we make a giant blood golem, leaving behind just a dry pile of cat husks?
