Other Games / Star Control 2 sequel: Children of Infinity
« on: April 26, 2024, 12:45:16 am »
I don't know how many of you remember Star Control 2, the Ur-Quan masters from the nineties?
It was a space-rpg with arcade like combat and a high dose of humor. For me it probably even ranks above DF in the list of best games ever.
It looks like it is finally getting a sequel by it's original creators. The new game will be called Free Stars: Children of Infinity.

It looks like it will stay very close to the original, with a retro feel, and the same arcade combat and humor.

They currently have a kickstarter going, which is already fully funded, but there are always stretch goals that would be very nice to have, so they can certainly use more support. The kickstarter page can be found here :
Kickstarter Children of Infinity
The kickstarter is currently probably the best source of information on the game, but they also have a website here:
website

I hear some of you think "but have there not been other sequels"
Yes, that is true, there have been, but they were not made by the original people and have received very mixed reviews

Star control 3 was made by Accolade after Toys for Bob lost the rights to the series. It is generally considered to be a dissapointment by fans, and the new game will likely act as if this whole thing never happened.

More recently Star Control Origins was made by Stardock. This is a very decent and fun game in my opinion, but takes place in a different universe with none of the original aliens and storylines.

Stardock does have the IP rights for the Star Control name, but not to the original content that Toys for Bob created. For the new game this is the other way around, the creators of the original game can and will use the old content and storylines, but can't use the Star Control name.

Welcome to the third museum adventure game!

Note that this succession game runs only in an older version of DF, version 0.47.05.

The first museum games can be found here: The Museum I, The Museum II
The museum game world now has it's own wiki site, curated by Lurker Z. information on the wiki project and further links can be found here

How does this succession game work?
The game is centered around a museum. The idea is that our adventurers are going to fill it with artifacts and treasure that they collect from all over the world.
When it's your turn your adventurer has one (real time) week to collect an item and bring it to the museum or die trying. To keep things interesting there's something extra: if you die early, or if you manage to collect an item well ahead of schedule you can use the rest of your week to (secretly) build a fortress, for future adventurers to adventure in. adventurers that survive can be retired at the museum or elsewhere. Please save often and consider making back-ups: this game is stretching the limits of what DF was intended for and some parts of the world may crash your game.
I did a more extensive write-up of the rules, read this if you are going to play a turn:

The museum can be found in Boltspumpkin, a dwarven castle near the centre of the map. View the third post in this topic for maps.

Welcome to the second museum adventure game! The game is based on the same idea, and the same rules as the first succession game, which can be found here

The game is centered around a museum. The idea is that our adventurers are going to fill it with artifacts and treasure that they collect from all over the world.
When it's your turn your adventurer has one (real time) week to collect -one- item and bring it to the museum or die trying. To keep things interesting there's something extra: if you die early, or if you manage to collect an item well ahead of schedule you can use the rest of your week to (secretly) build a fortress, for future adventurers to adventure in. adventurers that survive can be retired at the museum or elsewhere.

The museum has been constructed on the southern continent, within the borders of the human kingdom of Gil Ettad, just south of the town of Ageford along the road to Cutsprinkled. It is also known by the local population as the dwarven settlement of Throneshields.

You can always request to take your turn later once you are on the list. Please note that the turn list is -long-. If you don't feel like waiting that long you can also sign up for the first museum game, which is still running ( here )

The fortress of joyoushammer was in it's second summer when disaster struck. The forgotten beast Xan Buryraunches arrived! (a towering thornbill with forked antennae, green feathers, and a poisonous bite). The fortress was just over a year old, so this was not a good thing. I had an untrained military with no armor (I had only recently produced a few silver warhammers and bronze swords)

It effortlessly plowed through the undead draltha herds in the caverns, so I knew I was in trouble. My military confronted the creature at the entrance to my fortress. My dwarves fought bravely, but both my main squads were defeated and only some dabbling wrestlers from a third squad remained, half the population was already lost.  Xan buryraunches the abbyses of mold stormed up the stairs into the main fortress. I gave up all hope, but decided to at least check out that artifact throne I had just gotten a message about before ending the game. It was nothing special.

I went back to the forgotten beast and found out that it was....DEAD!! I checked the three surviving members of my military (two of them were badly wounded) to see who had saved my fortress, and found they had no kills. Since I felt the urge to reward the unknown hero with gifts and a legendary dining room, I looked at my other dwarves and found the hero was the most unlikely suspect. Onúl clapfountains, the legendary baby meatshield.
Her mother had given birth to her while in combat with Xan, the first thing poor Onúl saw in this world was Xan tearing apart and killing her father. Not much later Xan learned that you should never piss off a dwarven baby.

DF Modding / how to repair a savegame without raws?
« on: April 17, 2012, 03:11:35 pm »
This is, I guess, somewhat related to modding since it involves messing with the raw files.
The situation is the following:

The last player in our succession game has posted a savegame, but it is missing the raw files.
The player is not responding to messages, so it is unlikely he will upload a complete version of the savegame any time soon.
we want to move on with the succession game, and if possible, do not want to lose progress from the last turn.

Can I just copy the raw files from an earlier savegame from the same succession to the broken save, or will this corrupt the world/savegame?

This is the thread for the first museum succession game. It has been running for a surprisingly long time; 143 in-game years have passed, 75 adventurers have played, and 37 fortresses have been constructed around the world that serve as adventuring locations. You will need df version 34.11 to play. For the museum II game follow this link.

The game is centered around a museum.  The museum was constructed in the central keep of the town of Dinnerwandered in the kindom of Omon Woge at the start of the game. The idea is that our adventurers are going to fill it with artifacts and treasure that they collect from all over the world. When it's your turn your adventurer has one (real time) week to collect -one- item and bring it to the museum or die trying. To keep things interesting there's something extra: if you die early, or if you manage to collect an item well ahead of schedule you can use the rest of your week to (secretly) build a fortress, for future adventurers to adventure in. adventurers that survive can be retired at the museum.

I did a more extensive write-up of the rules, read this if you are going to play a turn
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The museum is situated on the ground floor of the keep of the city of Dinnerwandered . Items don't scatter when placed in the museum, so we can safely store them there for display.

That's enough information for now, any feedback is appreciated.

DF Suggestions / Other curses, weaknesses
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:48:11 pm »
I had a few ideas for some additional curses, or weaknesses. They are not undead related, and I realize that stuff like this is unlikely to make it into the current dev-cycle. I'm posting it anyhow, since I'm likely to forget about it otherwise. They're similar in nature to vulnerability to daylight in that they force the player to change his or her behaviour.

Slave to nature: Being afflicted by this curse or weakness, makes you strongly dependent on nature; you are bound to its area of influence. More specifically, you can only walk over tiles with natural vegetation on them, if you're not connected to nature you will suffer. walking on constructed roads, bare rock or soil, or other trespassing would give a (randomly generated?) penalty, for example activation of a nasty syndrome, excruciating pain, petrification etc. It should be associated with (randomly generated) positive traits; druids, creatures like nymphs, and elven mages could suffer from this.

Enemy of nature: The opposite effect; When afflicted by this curse or weakness, you can NOT pass over tiles with natural vegetation on them, (grass. moss, fungus etc).  Travelling from city to city, for example can only be done over the road. You would have extra reasons to hate the elves.
There's some fun in character tactics to circumvent not being able to navigate natural areas this way, like burning them to the ground so you can pass.

Anyhow both are likely to be career changing curses, and would limit your ability to explore, the negative effect should not be instantly fatal, it should likely be more subtle. You could visit these areas, but you would be very uncomfortable there. It would force you to play the game differently, which can be refreshing every now and then. Also characters affected by one of these should probably be unable to wear shoes or socks, as that would stop them from being able to connect to nature/rock. (Or maybe they could wear shoes with the soles cut out or something). Both ideas probably need some more work, so feedback is apreciated.

I'm having great fun with the game so far, I really like the whole atmosphere thats build up with all the random generation and all the background history for each world. great work!

I'd like to suggest a feature in the legends screen that would allow one to switch all discovered historic events back to undiscovered.

The reason for this is that many of the downloadable maps with interesting fortresses/adventuring locations have had their worlds generated with "reveal all historical events" on. It is possible to regenerate worlds using their seed numbers with their history hidden, but it is not possible to do so with maps that have player created fortresses and legends in them, and these locations are the most fun to explore.

This request is a result of the discussion here:
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=24465.0

edit: edited the message , request indeed sounds somewhat harsh.

DF General Discussion / Can you 'undiscover' history?
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:10:43 pm »
Is there a way to set all historic events back to 'undiscovered' for an already existing map or savegame?

Many of the downloadable maps with interesting fortresses/adventuring locations have had their worlds generated with "reveal all historical events" on. Is there a way to switch this off so my adventurers start out in an unknown world?

If there is a way to do this, tell me, and you'll make this dwarf very happy.
If not, and if there's interest from others, I'll start a topic about this on the suggestions forum.

10
This is the thread for the Halltraded succession game, it is listed in the Hall of Legends, and certainly worthy of a read-through. Halltraded was founded in a time when dwarves did not yet have to worry about forgotten beasts, underground caverns, or vampires, and on most maps, blue stuff. What it did have plenty of, are carp that could single-handedly kill an entire fortress, and apparently, burning suicide trade caravans.

If you want to load the fortress, you can find the old dwarf fortress version, DF 0.28.181.40d, at this link. A small warning: The fortress has grown into a complicated mess of mechanics, axles, magma channels, abandoned areas and aquaducts, and may run slowly on older machines.

original first post:

I know that succesion games are usually started after everyone agrees on a starting location, and game setup.
My current game however has been very interesting so far, and I could turn it into a succesion game if anyone is interested (and if I actually survive the first year)

The Fortress is in a terrifying region, with a volcano and a huge river. The place is crawling with undead. On last count the place had around 80 of them:
31 zombie carp, 22 skeletal carp, 3 zombie fire imps, 3 zombie deer, 5 skeletal deer, 5 zombie pike, 1
skeletal Pike, 5 skeletal sea lampreys, 2 skeletal sea lampreys, 5 Skeletal sturgeons and one zombie sturgeon.
Also the skeletal carp are crawling the land.
