Bannerblunts: Succession Fort of Rings and Cave Toads (Completed)
Dwarf Fortress Succession

The final year of 125 is over and fort is complete! Edited this post with the latest images.

This is the story of Zulbanunal, aka Bannerblunts, a community fort organized in Blind’s (BlindIrl) discord server. The fort was created with no great ambitions in mind, but it became a prosperous and relatively peaceful fort. The players were able to create great architecture and produce infinite wealth by manufacturing cave toad bone rings for 20 years.

Though it had its fair share of battles against demons of all kinds, an ettin rampaging in the mayor’s waterfall villa, a necromancer baroness reviving an entire goblin siege, and a pet dragon getting loose and melting a whole bunch of dwarves. There's been forgotten beasts killed by gecko demons, forgotten beasts killing each other in a proper battle royale, demons crushed by cave-in traps, and even demons wounded by brave, imprisoned cave toads.

The following messages will contain some of the first yearly summaries, then more years in later messages. I’m not sure if I figured out how the posting and message formatting and stuff on this forum works, but here goes…
Enjoy the story, hopefully!

Edit: Another thing, just wanted to say: feel free to comment, discuss or ask questions about the playthrough! The summaries, images and other discussion was all originally posted in Discord, so there could still be stuff missing from this thread as a result

Oh, one detail i was missing: This game was started in September, so it's been going for a few months.

Zulbanunal, Bannerblunts
Year 100, Melody

No summary was ever written for the first year. This text is by Otto_K.
Melody, founder of this fort and beginner DF player, stepped out after the year to focus on other games for the time being.

In the year 100, The Bolts of Clashing was founded in the fresh outpost of Bannerblunts by the dwarven civilization of Borlonfikod, the Severe Glazes. A small but functional surface fort was built between the rock and the soil layer,  which was later fortified and furnished to better act as a long-term part of the fort.

There was some issues with burrows among other things, and for some reason a very unhappy dwarf, who later died because they just stopped drinking. Stay hydrated, I suppose… I must wonder what happened to that dwarf. I’ve never lost a dwarf to suicide during the first year of a fort.

(Note from the future:)

Looking at Legends, the hidden history is revealed. Poor Edem Fathlilum. She failed to create an artefact in the first year of the outpost, so understandably, she withdrew from society and died of thirst.

Too bad, too. Reading further, she was the only daughter of Rakust Bravedvessel and Moldath Paddlethorns the prophet. Both of her parents were killed some decades prior during the fall of Gildcrystal by the forgotten beast, Guthstak Hagburied the Lustful Cancer of Pus.

You could have stayed in Rapidship. You could have made an artefact. You could have had a whole life. So then, that’s a sad ending for an entire family. Oh well. At least old Moldath and the fall of Gildcrystal has been a somewhat popular topic of statues in Bannerblunts.

I see a nice little fortress up in the highlands. We have coal, iron, platinum, all the good stuff. This should be pretty alright. Ahhh shit, there’s only 4 drinks…

The dwarves were stuck sitting around in a small part of the fort, until one of my succession partners advised me to turn off burrows. There’s some other issues: The bedrooms have been assigned as a public dormitory, and there’s no manager. I set the expedition leader as a manager and got some work orders going.

I built a well with a small water reservoir underneath, and a cool dining hall, and some big wide corridors and ramp stairwells for traversing the fort. The fort should be decently spacious in that regard. I also set up a hospital and a temple, as well as the first squad, and forged iron weapons and armor for them.

I set up a fruit gathering zone that’s producing so well, we haven’t brewed any mushrooms. I breached the cavern layer and cage-trapped the corridor to catch some cave animals. Meat! The fort looks well, and pretty happy too. Though the outpost diplomat walked out on me when my expedition leader was busy, possibly managing work orders, but oh well.

Note from the future:

A large portion of the darn spacious corridors in the manufacturing floor ended up being a waste of space, as they didn’t really serve any purpose and the important facilities were built elsewhere, mostly in the layers above the manufacturing floor. The giant cave toads found in the first cavern layer, however, proved very useful later on.

I've added a waterfall tavern, a mayor's villa, and a bookkeeper. I also move the barracks towards the top of the fort, right next to the stairs, so they could defend from the goblin snatchers that have been coming.

I have arrived at this humble village. Through vast mountains and dense forests, all I see is a patch of unattended farmland. I pull a dwarf to ask, "Is this Bannerblunts? Where are your brethren?". He points down below. The complicated chambers and stairways underground were left by the previous three administrators. I heard this place is in need of defense. Time to get to work.

The fort is surprisingly in good shape despite the lack of alcohol and clothes. Although the dwarfs are mindlessly carrying rocks to pile up into a meaningless mound, I immediately tell them to stop. The two exposed stairways had to be closed down for safety reasons, but one of the fisherdwarfs complained to me "This is the path I take to work". Aye, I compromise. At least fish under the roof. I agree to give him a little hut.

The front tower base has begun construction. I have visualized a grand entrance befitting the future king. I abandoned the previous farm plot and situated a new one under the tower for maximum efficiency. We will no longer lack alcohol to feed those useless visitors. Our little rope reed plantation should also suffice to provide us with some coarse braies to wear. Less a hairy naked dwarf ruining my eyes.

Image 3: Guildhalls and artifact vault.

A period of peace. A band of goblins arrived, and they demanded a parley. "Over my dead body", I said. The first row of traps was already complete. You lot are welcome to try. The goblins skipped over the traps like over a trough by the road. Looks like my mechanics need some beating. The mechanisms are not up to standard. Noted. I set up some guild halls to solve the lack of skilled dwarfs. Hopefully, we will have better traps in the near future.

It's Autumn. An accident happened. The annoying outpost liaison came running in, shouting that there was a big bird outside. I sent our squad to take a look. The first layer's ceiling, unbeknownst to me, has collapsed for some time, and a massive roc took the liberty to dive in. A poor dwarf carrying 30 stacks of our fresh vegetables was the victim. "He was cut in half. It's gruesome", the kid who picked up the corpse told me. The roc was put to sleep at the cost of an arm of our axe dwarf. I blessed him with an early retirement.

My term is almost coming to an end, and we are still lacking beds and weapons. In the first cavern layer, a good chunk of marble was found, useful for smelting steel and making statues alike. I hastily set up a steel production line. After inspection, the weapon quality is up to standard, but the armor needs much improvement.

It's the dawn of year 104, the age of legend.

The military doesn't wear boots and our militia commander got injured in the foot. guess I will have to fix that.

The handy work of three people building stairways in 3 different spots is hilarious. Guess I will start with some surface defense. Do we have flux stone here?
Oh, There's some marble.

Salvadaddy — 14.09.2023
Care to add a fourth? 🤣

Albreo — 14.09.2023
Now you said it. Might as well add one to the mountainside but that one entrance on top of the mountain has to go. too close to the edge.

Salvadaddy — 14.09.2023
But it leads to the fishing zone

Albreo — 14.09.2023
Then I will build a cute fishing thatch over it.

I constructed numerous bedrooms, as well as expanding the stockpile / workshop area. I replaced some of my old shop-specific work orders with global ones, and dug some zinc for brass, and expanded the dining, temple and guildhall facilities as much as I was able to. As to monster stuff, a giantess was captured, and a forgotten beast rampaged in the walled-off caves, causing a big fire and collapsing some rock.

Tonight on Dwarf Fortress… URIST, YOU BLITHERING IDIOT! How did the ettin get inside the mayor’s villa? HOW DID SHE GET IN? A hole in the roof and an open river-facing wall are the main suspects. The Riders of Steel were deployed, but they were uselessly late. The dwarves at the mayor’s residence had efficiently pummeled the creature to death, thanks to the miner, Kadol Edemcatten, epicly hacking the creature with her iron pick. In the end, the ettin was able to bite her in the head and kill her. Our brave mayor also fought and suffered injuries.

Later, the goblins came. When they did, the cage traps were full of forbidden boar cages (???), and the goblins maneuvered past the weapon traps, making their way into the main stairwell and the undersoil road. I sent two squads into the stairwell to wipe them out with great success, but before they arrived, six civilians had been slaughtered.

Our poor mayor, Onol Murderbells. Her right shoulder was mangled beyond recognition in the ettin attack caused by construction failures. Both of her legs got broken, shot with bronze bolts by the goblin invaders. She was left lying, wounded and helpless, in the surface mines. But her bones got better, and she kept going with her duties. She is 91 years old.

Projects:

I decided that it was time to dig deeper, when I found a magma pit. A deep, magma pit. Upon further inspection this magma pit spanned from elevation -3 down to elevation -115, where it met the magma sea. Initially I was making a pump stack to slowly drain it so we could reach candy, but I quickly decided against that. However, I already have been workng on a pump stack, and have it going up a fair bit, with resources to make it go a little further. It still isn't nearly big enough to get it up to the fortress, however. Perhaps we can just use minecarts to get the magma we need for forges, now that we don't need to drain the magma pit.

In other news, I decided to dig deeper, and uncovered the 3rd cavern layer, which had nether cap. I've never seen nether cap before, so that was pretty cool. Anyways, it's going to be a long dig, but I'm determined to reach that candy.

Logistics:

I was nonstop getting spammed with job cancellations , due to the fact that there were work orders set up for tons of things. So, I decided to add some if then statements to several work orders, making them trigger less often and thus reducing the number of alerts significantly. Also, we've been making brass for a long time and I didn't want to stop that in case someone else had plans for it, so now we have over 700 brass bars.

Stuff from chat:

Sal: There’s loads of cave toads in the guildhall floor. The toads were getting into fights so I spread out the pasture to be all over the guildhalls, but then they got into more fights so I just deleted the pasture
Albreo: Because you forgot to assign a trainer to the newly born toad. They revert back to the wild.

Nothing happened much this year. The main agenda is to rush Magmaforges as quickly as possible to forge equipment for war. More than half of the rag-tag military has been dismissed due to undesirable traits and new blood has been introduced into the group. Their skills are not up to standard yet. Do not send them out and keep updating their equipment until everything is green.

The surface entrance only progressed slightly this year due to half a year being put into Magmaforge. The trade depot was moved to the surface to accommodate wagons and the trap array has been fixed and should be able to handle medium size seige easily. The recommended defense position is to station the military on the stairs one layer below and wait for the enemy to enjoy the traps first.

Image 2: Gremlin

There was one noteworthy incident of a gremlin opening the locked doors in the first cavern. I was horrified as dwarfs ran out to pick up bones in the cave while I knew that there were a bunch of cave dwellers in hiding. Here they are. Batmans. There's already a 100 in here and I have turned off the cave dweller for the time being until I can build another trap corridor to greet them. Do not go out and beware of the gremlin. I have chased one away but it may come back.

By winter, another human army came. While I hastily ordered the military to fetch the newly minted armor, they were scared away by a boar...

Litast The ex-military is currently not doing well and has been at the absolute bottom of the mood for an entire year. She might not live long but if you can build a library fast enough put her in to bask in the mist. She has sacrificed that arm for the fort and can't probably take off the rag clothes, lol. Her arm is on the guild hall pedestal if you ever need to complete her corpse.

To-do list:

Make contact with more Human or Dwarf civ for trade
A library by the waterfall
Upgrade noble room
Save Litast

Another productive year! ‘Zulbanunal, Bannerblunts’ has to be the dumbest fort name I’ve had, but this is my favorite playthrough so far. Seeing the other players’ ways of doing things taught me a lot about the game. My previous forts were small, and getting better at the game felt like a big challenge. The idea of trying out a succession fort restored my motivation to play, and I’ve learned quite a bit during the run.

That being said, I’m not going to deal with a lot of complicated stuff this year. I want to build. I have no idea what’s going on in the metalsmithing or clothing industries anymore, there’s so many work orders… Pump stack? How does that work?

I succeeded in setting up the library. Manufacturing all the writing materials was another spreadsheet-twirling Dwarf Fortress escapade for sure, but following the Wiki, I was able to do it. I also built new fancy quarters for the duchess. Opposite the new throne room, I built a nice office for the manager. He’s been working from the surface fort’s mess hall for seven years, and he’s the one who keeps this fort running. He’s earned some comfort.

Image 2: Statues. Kadol Keychannel was instrumental to slaying the ettin.

I spent a solid half of our 700 brass bars to make rooms with shiny walls. I commissioned some statues to honor our friends the cave toads, and to commemorate the ettin assault in my previous year of 104. I’m experimenting with ramps instead of staircases, and higher open spaces, because they look cool. Building a visually attractive fort is kinda hard when there’s 3 different builders with their own styles, but I think we’re all doing a good job with it.

The elves gave a tree quota of 37 trees at most, so that's something to keep in mind going forward. Goblins came and were decimated by the traps. I had to lay off one of the legendary metalsmiths because he was missing an arm for some reason? I noticed he was milling about and socializing instead of working, turns out he can’t work. Also the work order for coal seemed to have gone missing so I set up a new one, allowing steel production to continue. I also started minting some more silver bars.

It has been a very interesting year. For starters, the king arrived! This is the first time I've ever seen the entourage myself, so it was pretty exciting. Notably, the king came holding a dwarf bone coffin, which I think is his symbol of office? Idk.

I also got 2 grand guildhall requests, which I fulfilled with a gilded floor. Other than that, the king wanted to dig deeper, so deeper I have dug. I set up a waterpipe from a small lake in cavern 3 that provides water down to the spire, to extinguish magma. Overall it's been going pretty well, as I've uncovered a rusted metal scourge and a singing metal maul, and not a single demon or divine agent. I've also been establishing a small foothold at the top of the spire, in case anything does come out.

In other news, an artifact got stolen! I scheduled 2 interrogations (I set up a DM earlier in the year) but I don't think they've been interrogated yet. I set up a small dungeon, in case that was the issue, but it didn't seem to be. Sadly I have no clue who could've stolen it; the 2 people I'm interrogating I chose because they weren't dwarfs, and thus weren't originally from here

Image 2: We must dig deeper!

From chat:

Sal: Also, that was an interesting contraption you made to fill minecarts with magma. Never seen anything like it

Albreo: I designed it myself since everyone else style is just overcomplicated with multi-z, track, and such. It is pretty safe to operate and can fill a lot of minecarts at the same time.

For context:

The method in question consists of dumping a whole lot of minecarts on top of a grate, pumping magma with a screw pump onto the tile, and then hauling the minecarts by hand into the magmaforge area. Protect the pump operator with some walls and make sure nobody wanders into the grate room while magma is being pumped into it. Thanks to this method, the pump stack wasn't necessary, and nobody bothered to complete building it.

Is Litast the scholar okay, i'm worried now

Salvadaddy — 10.10.2023
Oh, I may have banished him because he kept trying to pick fights. And I didn’t want him to pick a fight with the wrong person and get killed
Well, not banished; transferred him to one of our holdings
OH WAIT
He had kids
And they went with him, which is why the population went back down to 200
But don’t worry, I’ll start accepting in bards, since they make good miners. And trust me, we will need a lot of miners for our king’s ambitions

Albreo — 11.10.2023
It's her... but both of her arms are ruined so she can't punch anyone even if she wants to. Guess I will bring her back next time.

Salvadaddy — 11.10.2023
I was worried she’d kick someone. But dang, I didn’t realize people liked her

Albreo — 11.10.2023
Well, I should give her a nickname, so, you will notice. And if you have anyone particularly fond of, you can give them a name as well.

Salvadaddy — 11.10.2023
I should just pick a dwarf at random to give a villa lol

Albreo — 13.10.2023
You have a dungeon master but then you forget a captain of the guard. So, whoever it is can't be interrogated.
The sock is missing. It was taken out of the map. I now declare a crusade for the missing sock. Whoever has it in their possession will be getting war.

Salvadaddy — 13.10.2023
Ohhhhhhh I was wondering if that was the issue; I always forget which one is which
But yes, go to war over the sock! It’s what I would do

The fort is coming along nicely. There's no major event throughout the year.

The surface construction progressed a lot this year with more plans to situate a big castle on the side of the mountain. I also built a new jail for potential evildoers. Any occupant will be amazed by the rich of our fort with gold chains around their necks. The bar doors can be lowered with leavers for eternal imprisonment. All of the accumulated goblins in cages have been dumped into the volcano on z-7.

I have produced more brass for you to play with. Currently, the melting power is a bit too short, so, I plan to build 6 more smelters. If you want to try the process of magma hauling feel free to test it out.

I have made contact with a few more potential trade partners, precisely 2 dwarf civs and 2 human civs. Expect a few tributes of trinkets seasonally. The earring was separated from the pile so the ring and cut bone could be traded safely once again. We have plenty of bolts of clothes and they can be traded with elves if needed.

The military is now split into 4 squads the first two are the serious combatants. The other two are a recreational/reserve (including the king) and a guard squad. I have started to send them out to gain experience. It's safe to beat some goblin and elf settlements nearby. The human is a bit tough to chew for the moment.

The sock missing since last year is yet to be found. The lead is cold. The interrogation of two suspects yielded nothing. It has to be one of us that succumbs to the vile word. Secure your precious dearly!!

The Massacre of Bannerblunts!!!

The year started with some action as 70 goblins came to siege the fortress. My frames are taking a pretty big hit… And guess who's back, Edzul Fortresswalls, the esteemed baroness of Fencedblunts, necromancer.

I was digging a space for a new trap corridor near the surface - a project that was soon abandoned - since I just don't like siegers coming so damn close to the main stairwell. But I might have created the worst-case scenario through my own actions. The current traps have served us well against the living, but what about the undead...?

Getting arrogant due to our gate defences, I expanded the burrow to continue digging work. This encouraged the baroness to haul her ass to the front gate, as she wanted to leave during the siege. She must have seen or heard the goblins dying in the spiked ball traps upstairs, as she rushed up the stairs to spawn goblin corpses and faded ghouls. They kept dying in the traps, but slowly, with the power of sheer fuck-you energy, the dead pushed through the defenses and engaged the two military squads.

The baroness was now running outside the gate and mass resurrecting everything, and the military dwarves were fighting in the trap corridor. I resorted to desperate measures and chose to have her killed to end the fight. Not so easy, as she was cage-trapped as soon as she was flagged hostile. I had to TURN OFF THE BURROW to get some kid to haul her into a makeshift pasture, where the warriors cut her down. At this point, many dwarves had stumbled outside and joined the grand melee.

Eventually all the goblin body parts were pacified. The baroness was one of our civ’s nobles, and any diplomatic pushback shouldn’t affect us. Oh well, siege over, with only 4 dead and ehhh… 16 wounded. Now to deal with other matters, like trade. I traded with elves and humans. Dwarves arrived with three caravans and an army of traders, but glitched when two wagons died (??). They all stopped trading, and weren’t leaving either. Destroying the trade depot let them leave, with some free loot from the depot and the dead wagon left behind.

Image 2: Edzul Fortresswalls resurrecting goblins. Fighting through the undead in the trap corridor to reach her

I followed the instructions left to me, and the dwarves hauled some magma and constructed a new row of magma smelters. I built a larger hospital to prepare for future accidental bloodbaths. I also decided to tear down many of the old workshop areas, and build new ones, as well as new spacious stockpile rooms, which I enjoy. My favorite new rooms are the hospital and the new brewery / kitchen room.

Meanwhile: I’m an idiot and allowed another artefact to be stolen. Babinkeng, cave toad leather leggings. Taken by Pobe Otezin the human.

So, that’s the first 10 years. I’ve enjoyed doing this write-up! Picking which images to show, and all that. I know the quality isn’t on the same level as the best narrative-driven fort reports. The story is in the form of yearly summaries, and they were written mostly just to be concise and informative.

Discord even has a word limit for messages! And I personally found that I liked to cut my reports at 5-ish paragraphs, or else they seem too meandering. So yeah, that’s the deal. But I think many of the pictures also tell the story very well as the texts. I also tried to include parts of the discussion in the chat during the years, to shed a bit more light into the events.

Anyways. This isn’t some horrifying terrifying evil fort- it’s a pretty chill fort. Still, there was some action. Goblins breached the fortress multiple times. A roc invaded the undersoil road through the collapsed roof. An ettin snuck into the mayor’s villa through a hole in the roof. (Is this a pattern?) And of course, the necromancer incident.

The next 10 years are mostly ones of stability, but also there’s intensifying spire mining shenanigans, as well as the fierce bravery of Humorcrewed the giant cave toad, and some more gratuitous violence besides that. So, story continues…

Again, feel free to comment if you want!

Edit: Edited all the messages so far to include the date of when each year summary was originally posted in discord. Just to be thorough, and document the timeline of the playthrough.

This year, I've decided to work more on mining through the spire, as well as working on the alternate entryway. I added several more spiked ball traps, and made a very small path with rock fall traps, made so an invader will dodge the rock and fall into a pit with a lead floor at the bottom. I also attempted to set up a minecart blender, but that didn't go so well.

The main thing I focused on, digging the spire, has been rather eventful. I will start by saying that I made a special memorial for those who have fallen as a result of the spire. By the end of my turn, 6 have fallen. It started with unearthing a spider devil, who kicked a miner in the head, which then exploded into gore. Then I sent out the militia to kill it, which cost 3 more lives. The next event was when we uncovered an agent of the divine, however we trapped it with no injuries. Speaking of which, I added some traps meant to contain any otherworldly entities that may escape the spire.

After the angel, I dug through another area that I swear wasn't empty, since I've been using tracks and glass flooring to peak through the floor, but there was another spider devil, who killed the miner. In the end, it took one more miner to dig out an area for the beast to leave, which cost their life, but allowed for us to contain the devil. Also we had a parrot fiend, but that didn't kill anyone to my memory.

So now we have a spider devil, a parrot fiend, and a divine agent all in separate traps, ready for future use. Lastly, I ended my turn by unearthing some adamantine, safe and ready to be mined, for whoever wishes to do the honors.

I love it when a dwarf's head explodes into gore and it says that they are unconscious
I mean, it's true, but I feel like it's a bit of an understatement
I bring this up because we lost 2 dwarfs to the spider devil
Make that 3

Salvadaddy — 28.10.2023
The humans wish to parley; shall we oblige?

Albreo — 28.10.2023
No.

Salvadaddy — 28.10.2023
The correct answer lmao
Also I just remembered that it requires an artifact, so yeah, hell no

Salvadaddy — 28.10.2023
We done massacred those suckers
Because the army didn't just stay stationed like they should have

Hold on... you took cute toads, and put them in tiny cells to be eaten by demons??

Salvadaddy — 31.10.2023
I tried to use hoary marmots, but those need to graze apparently
Btw I forgot to mention but we have 7 divine relics, but idk how to make them symbols of the monarchy

I put digging deeper on hold initially to build a noble's quarters for the new Baron Catten Ideniseth.  I almost decided to send her on goblin subjugation missions to avoid the extra noble requests, but I didn't want to sacrifice a different dwarf as the militia captain. I kept the same aesthetic as the other noble rooms as much as possible.

We have too many animals and I noticed that someone set up a bunch of butcher orders, which is great but miasma is becoming a problem.  I temporarily removed the indoor butchers and placed some outside next to the trading post.  I also noticed corpses weren't getting picked up, there is a corpse stockpile but I don't know if it had many corpse types set to be taken, misclicked the corpse category and took all before checking. I've begun war training the Leopards and Grizzlies.

Asmel Duralavuz has the aspect of one Fey! And is using bronze bars, marquise cut lapis lazulis, stray wild boar bone and every peice of silk cloth on the map to produce an artifact. He worked all year, and he's still going; his pants are wearing out from running back and forth.

I changed the clothing orders to just make 80 of each per year so there is more clothing available generally. Tried some safe digging in the spire after finishing up the Baron's rooms.

Anticipating more adamantine, I set up four craftsdwarf workshops near the magma forges explicitly for strand extraction, set two magma forges for wafer production and made some adamantine stockpiles. I removed raw adamantine from the stone stockpile, but I didn't see if there was another adamantine bar pile.

All at once the giant cave toads were losing their training and attacking whatever was nearby, the butchering orders increase. I replaced the butcher shops on floor 46, now made of bismuth bronze. I also removed the butcher shops from next to the trading post, but I left the skulls as a warning to our enemies.

More adamantine is ready to be dug out, maybe splash a bit of water down there first though, it's a little spicy. Assign 7 goodies to the king done, I expanded his throne room but ran out of time and didn't get to place his throne.  There are a couple walls that need finishing there too

A vile force of darkness arrived in 2nd of Limestone Early Autumn, a pathetic band of six goblins, likely a distraction for the four snatchers that made it inside, military took care of all of them.

From chat:

GeeFin — 01.11.2023
I've started digging deeply, lost one dwarf to a wall-fireball
also managed to flood the lower layer with magma, but I'm working on adding water and channeling it
managed to pick up a few bits of adamantine before the oopsie
I'm setting up a chute to the water for putting out fires/lava so it doesn't get stuck on the middle floors as much, digging is going slowly

Salvadaddy — 01.11.2023
You should be able to build off the chute that I made, I hope

GeeFin — 01.11.2023
Yep, I'm just walling around more of the path between the chute you had and the adamantine layer.

More traps!! The front door trap has been rebuilt once again but with an additional route. The road underneath will have to be rebuilt to fit which I'm a little bit lazy to do it currently. The front door now has 3 gates. The spire trap is almost complete with only a few unlink traps but ready for action. The red stick is in the main hall (manual activation).

There's a bunch of FB spawning in the cave but otherwise a calm year. No one visited us for the whole year so I couldn't catch any thieves, sad. Might have to put some bait.

Maintenance: 12000 splatters cleaned, 4200 rag clothes sold, 6500 webs destroyed.

I have replenished our two mainstay squads with a surprise addition, an all-human squad. No more freeloading you monster slayers. Currently, I have started a war grizzly bear program to be assigned with squads going out to fight humans. The rest of the time I spent building the surface fort and it is now deemed habitable. All leaks should have been patched and ready for someone to move in.

GeeFin — 02.11.2023
that is a good question, it made it through the front gate so they probably have trap intel
the four snatchers with the army also made it inside

Albreo — 02.11.2023
Ah. Goblin spies. Time to rebuild it again.

GeeFin — 03.11.2023
I didn't realize autobutcher was on while I was playing, I was wondering why it looked like random animals I hadn't set to butcher were getting the axe

Salvadaddy — 03.11.2023
Yeah we have a lot of cave toads

GeeFin — 03.11.2023
had a lot of cave toads 🙂  I think only the Bait toads are left at this point

At the start of the year there was a 100-human siege. Many fell to traps and they ran before even getting to the new trap corridor. Still, I wanted to build a cool combat arena at the end of the corridor, so I built one. Someday, you’ll get a chance to shine, siege corridor.

My build project this year was to add a rooftop layer to the nobles quarter. Dabbling with ramps and open spaces is just good fun. I made a small tavern at -100 for the spire miners. Started mining out a temples quarter up in the waterfall fort, but I don’t really have ideas for it. Commenced the production of copper rings to spend our endless stack of copper bars, and started making meals again, for supplying the various dining halls with their own meal stockpiles.

Another giantess walked into a cage trap, so I put her in the main temple, because that's a thing around here for some reason? Displaying caged giantesses seems like an odd fetish to have but... sure, go for it, dwarves. Who am I to judge? The locals tried to convince me that it's all for a giant breeding program to save their endangered species, but I saw through their logic and pointed out that we don't have any giants. Only giantesses. Explain that, liberals...

Image 2: A large quantity of bone rings. Look at all those masterworks...

I made the discovery that Dfhack trading is much easier than vanilla. I traded over 100 000 dorf-bucks worth of bone rings to the human and dwarf merchants (Four caravans in total). Marveling at the absolute pile of rings at the trade depot gave me perspective on what happens when you spend fifteen years producing bone crafts. My final trade of 50 000 dorf-bucks amounted to but a fraction of the wealth amassed on the depot, even after trading with three other caravans.

I tried my hand at spire mining and found myself enjoying it like minesweeper. My round started strong with the discovery of a demon guarding three relics in one. I found a total of five divine treasures, still waiting to be picked up, as well as mining out a lot of adamantine walls. A lot more adamantine remains on -116.

I excavated in various floors in -115 and above, and I also mapped, drained and explored on the level -116. I also found six creeps and left them trapped in the spire. I’m sure somebody will take care of it…

A couple of dwarves got swept down into a hole while draining water, and almost drowned, but they survived. I mined a lava pocket by accident, and Vicu Kirosithbi the human bard was killed. I also resupplied the stockpile with microcline blocks, and made another stockpile for screw pump components.

I started things off strong, to say the least. Trying to mine some more candy, since that’s always a nice commodity to have, we struck something quite interesting. Our miner may have heard some skittering or whispering within the stone, but surely it was mere superstitious nonsense. We had yet to be punished for our hubris, so clearly it wouldn’t be a problem, right? Wrong. It turns out that ignoring such things and digging can release some interesting entities.

Well, we literally unleashed hell, and somehow the miner was able to escape by the grace of Armok. Fortunately, we were able to shut our granite doors behind the miner just in time.

I watched with glee as I saw the clowns gather at the door, thinking that they would be unable to break through. Once again, I was proven incorrect. I was fortunate enough to lock a hatch as well, but I would be lying if I said that them breaking the door didn’t scare the crap out of me. Anyways, this certainly altered my plans for this turn.

Throughout the year I would let some demons reach the hallway to the spire, where I used some traps to kill and capture them. I killed I think ~4-5 demons using Albreo's spike traps, though a few of the traps were destroyed when the demons composed of flame died and exploded. As for the other demons, I designed some cave in traps, which crushed at least 8 demons, to finish them off.

Image 2: Humorcrewed the giant cave toad

Image 3: Shrine of Humorcrewed

At one point, I thought, “wouldn’t it be fun to see a fight between a divine agent and a clown?”, and since I had both trapped, I decided to release them. What happened next was quite a spectacle. Initially, things weren’t looking great for the divine agents, and one of them perished whilst fighting the demon I released, a Devil of Steam. The other divine agent was doing substantially better, and dismembered the legs, right hand, and left arm, before succumbing to a similar but equally deadly fate.

As for the finishing blow? It was done by none other than a Giant Cave Toad! She had been trying her best, fighting the demon alongside the 2 angels, but never landing a hit until it was 1 on 1. And to think that she just happened to have escaped the trap she was placed in as bait! Regardless of her intended fate, she decided otherwise and bit off the neck of the Devil of Steam, finishing it off.

She was dubbed “Humorcrewed” for her valiant efforts. But alas, her story does not have a happy ending. You see, the time she spent locked away in a small corridor, trapped, separated from everyone and everything, hearing the sounds of horrors best left unknown every day, she wasn’t doing too well. She became more and more wild, and perhaps this is what made her ferocious enough to take on the demon in the first place. This led to her forgetting what little training she had between her birth and being shoved in a little cell. The dwarves haven't mastered the art of domesticating giant cave toads, after all.

Nevertheless, she was wandering about, making her way back to the main fortress, when she unfortunately picked a fight with the wrong dwarfs. Already wounded, she was swiftly put down by the same dwarves whom she may have saved. Her deed would not be forgotten, however, and in her honor a shrine was built next to the main staircase for all to see, with a statue, and a chain, for where she was to reside before she met an untimely demise.

In other news, I've gone a bit deeper, and we now have some footing in the tube portion of the spire, that the clown car came through. I obtained this area towards the end of my turn, so I wasn't able to finish connecting a hatch cover to a lever so I could release any potential fluids. Also, while digging down through the tube, I found a divine relic as I revealed some water, which washed down said relic into hell and I can't find it because it has no sprite. It also washed down a single piece of adamantine but that's less of an issue. And now the demons have mud, so good for them.

As for things unrelated to the spire, we were besieged by goblins, humans, and some dwarves, who all fell to our traps, leaving our militia quite bored. There was also a Savanna Titan which came out of the same side the human merchants were leaving. So the humans killed it, only losing the wagons and some men.

So, that was the legend of Humorcrewed and this fort’s first breach into the underworld. That was probably the most unique and wild story in the run of this fortress. Salva revised it at my request, filling in a lot of the details regarding the events, and I’m very happy to finally have the full story available to me. I think it’s a pretty thrilling read, too!

After year 115, work continues containing the clowns and establishing an outpost in hell, as well as forging adamantine artifacts, finalizing the gate defences, accommodating even more nobles, catching more giantesses and so on. There’s some good stuff to be told, from the FB rumble, to the noble purge, the bear room, and the minecart blender incidents. And the dragon! It’s all in the reports, just need to post them.

Maybe I’ll write some supplements to accompany the remaining reports, like some dwarf introductions, and info on the world. Would be a shame to rush a good story to end too soon, so some padding and filler to come soon

Lore on the world
The Passionate Continent
in the Domain of Legends

Borlonfikod, the Severe Glazes, is a fairly usual dwarven civilization, occupying a mountain range and its immediate surroundings. The mountains of The Beak of Nets are sandwiched between wooded lands. In the north and east lay the vast Artificial Jungle of the elves. To the west, the deserted vastness of The Ivory Hill.

And to the south, the contested lands of the Jungles of Land and the hills and forests beyond. These lands are pretty actively fought over by the goblins of the Silent Hate, the elves of the Glacial Animal, and the expansionist, potentially seafaring Confederation of Continents, human civilization. And us, good dwarves of Borlonfikod, at war with all three of them.

(Why seafaring? How would those humans manage that? Well, it seems likely, since their name alludes to Continents, plural… And also, they’ve claimed a truly vast area on every shore of the inner sea, as well as other seaside areas on the other side of their peninsula.)

In the southern sub-continent, past the Rumored Forests, lives our sister civilization, the dwarves of Moldath Immast, led by queen Lokum Rhymedattics. The Avalanche of Influence has always had more sites than Borlonfikod, but a smaller population. Most of them live in far-flung hillocks like some decadent hill dwarves. We’ve enjoyed peace and trade with them and even coerced them into paying tribute to us.

I’ve been gathering some info on the civilization’s sites, so ig that comes next

Okay, huge lore dump time!

Here’s an overview of the sites of
Borlonfikod, the Severe Glazes:
Historical info from Legends in year 125

Fortresses

Rapidship:
Population 50 (??). The first site of the Severe Glazes, governed by the Tombs of Meditating. The first queen, Inod Oneworked, had a romance with the captain of the guard, Sakzul Bittenboulders. But he was abducted by Obi the Shady, the bleak freak. Returning as its mate, Sakzul became an enemy of Borlonfikod.

In year 49, a mad dwarf failed an artefact and killed her own sister. A one-year-old Onol Murderbells fought Obi the Shady here. The queen died of old age in year 95, and her youngest son, Monom Rosyglove, ascended the throne.
Count Ast Sunpost of Rapidship resides in Bannerblunts.

Bannerblunts:
Population 200. Omg! That’s the place you’ve been reading about! The new capital since year 108.

Lettercover:
Population 300. The fortress was attacked by Ngob Vaultheat the Jade Pearl, the dragon, but the dwarves prevailed and slew the beast.

Lancedflukes:
Population 300. Baroness Catten Paddlequests of Lancedflukes resides in Bannerblunts.

Walkedshield:
Population 75. A fairly new fortress founded in 94.

Ruined fortresses

Gildcrystal:
The destruction of this fortress is a very pivotal moment in Borlonfikod’s history, as the dwarves haven’t been able to reclaim it to this day. Many dwarves in Bannerblunts have ties to the tragedy of Gildcrystal.

It was founded in year 31. Dwarf-roads were built to connect it to Rapidship and Lettercover.  In year 61, the fortress was attacked by Simo, a great feathered mosquito, which had already attacked Rapidship before. Two years later, Gildcrystal was attacked by the forgotten beast, Guthstak Hagburied the Lustful Cancer of Pus, which destroyed the fortress.
Later, an ancient elf from Amazeberries took residence in the ruins.

Mountain Halls

Looks like nothing ever happens in mountain halls?

Pleatcobalt:
Population 100.
Containfenced:
Population 100.

Whippedjumps:
Population 100.
Toldwinds:
Population 100.

Dabbledstandard:
Population 100.
Socketlances:
Population 100.

Lizardnet:
Population 100.

Hillocks

Salvebridges:
Population 100. Borlonfikod’s first hillocks, founded in year 1. It was soon destroyed by bronze colossus Onol Battleduty, then reclaimed by dwarves in year 16. Sakzul, mate of the bleak freak, the queen’s former lover, attacked Salvebridges in 21. A wicked troll with backwards joints also attacked the hillocks. Seems like several of Bannerblunts’ soldiers came from here, including an ettin-slayer.

Palacecomets:
Population 200. Baron Ast Conjurerope of Palacecomets resides in Bannerblunts.

Showeredcloister:
Population 40. This hillocks was reclaimed in 74, after it was destroyed by Rightattack, the Swords of Indignation, bronze colossus. One of the top soldiers of Bannerblunts, Zuglar Fortressknighted the Royal Rim of Heaviness, is from Showeredcloister.

Zuglar’s father had a pretty weird life. He infiltrated Amazeberries, an elven retreat of the Glacial Animal, as a monster slayer, and died in its defense against goblins of the Silent Hate.

Quakeutter:
Population 100. It was routed by a roc and reclaimed in year 30. Multiple other monsters also attacked, like a bleak freak, only daughter of Sakzul Bittenboulders and Obi the Shady. This beast also had a daughter who’s still alive out there, somewhere.

Fencedblunts:
Population 30. The baroness, Edzul Fortresswalls, became an ardent worshipper of the Dead Burial, fierce skeletal god of death, becoming obsessed with her mortality. And thus, the Dead Burial gifted her the granite slab, “The Fated Tombs”, and the secrets of life and death. Edzul the necromancer later resided in Rapidship. Later, she visited Bannerblunts, causing the massacre of Bannerblunts in year 110, and died there at the hands of the fort’s soldiers.

This is pretty uncanny, as the Dead Burial is a very popular god in Bannerblunts. Many of his statues are fearsome, such as one where he’s devouring a dwarf!

Seems like Shem Avuzidash, baroness of Fencedblunts as of 122, served as a mercenary with the goblin army. These mercs are discussed more down at the part about Tempesttufted. Looks like this hillocks has quite a dark side to it.

Agelabor:
Population 20. It says that a blueberry was stolen by a black bear here. Okay.

Fencepattern:
Population 200. This hillocks seems to be in untamed wilds, as giant bears and giant cougars attacked it.

Tramplemansions:
Population 20. Routed by a roc, reclaimed in 94.

Bastionrims:
Population 100.

Sites Economically Linked to Bannerblunts

Nutwring:
Elven forest retreat. Population 100. Founded in 102.
Jadetulips:
Elven forest retreat. Population >10. Founded in 104.

Wallriddle:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 105.
Fountainone:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 106.

Oarchambers:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 106.
Breachconstructs:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 106.

Rainstockade:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 107.
Laborrag:
Hillocks. Population 100. Founded in 107.

Occupied Sites:

Doctrinefly:
Dark dwarven pits. Population 20. Founded by the Silent Hate in 102, then occupied by Borlonfikod in 104.

Puzzlemalice:
Dark dwarven pits. Population 20. Founded by the Silent Hate in 103, then occupied by Borlonfikod in 104.

Tempesttufted:
Dwarven forest retreat. Population 300. Founded by the Glacial Animal in year 1, then occupied by the Silent Hate in 89, many of the elves killed and impaled on spears and grotesque monuments.
It was attacked in 103 and 104 by a human group based in Clawwhiskey (the Clasp-Fellowship of Ale), from the Confederation of Continents.

Then it was attacked by dwarves from Rapidship in 104. They were led by one Mafol Archlimbs, who became Tempesttufted’s administrator. Curiously, his parents were in fact the necromancer baroness Edzul, and Ast Conjurerope, current baron of Palacecomets.

Mafol started his life as a mercenary in Fencedblunts, and was apparently hired by goblins to raid and occupy a dwarven fortress. After this fateful battle, he settled in Rapidship. He was quite a scoundrel, huh? Imagine helping goblins wipe out a fortress! No wonder he quit mercenary work after that battle.

I've expanded the water further into the spire to put some of the lava surprises out. I added another floodgate and method to refill the water in the lowest cavern layer with the infinite water from the middle layer (shift - f5 hotkey)

Somewhat big army of humans. they bailed as soon as one of the first troops died to the entryway traps. @Albreo I also modified the tower, hope you like it. I also added another ettin to the tavern, a pig tail farm next to the loom/clothier workshops. I moved the trade caravan over a bit to fix the stuck trader issue.

I've also dug out a bunch more adamantine and made a set of 10 adamantine shields. The dwarves that melted all have a slab now. I'll wrap it up tomorrow probably and have some more pictures. I'm sure that I left the artifact room open but I dug out 52 adamantine wafers

GeeFin — 20.11.2023
I've been butchering beak dogs, it looks like they produce them
Its like a black stomach gemstone

Albreo — 20.11.2023
I think the human squad has been in constant training since my time. Also, the blue, yellow, and purple squads are rehabilitation, guard, and recruit squads respectively. They are not fit for serious combat and also dislike combat.

GeeFin — 21.11.2023
I changed those squad names you mentioned:
Blue = Rehab = The Shower of Mists
Yellow = Guard = The Dented Shields
Purple = Recruits = The Green Spears

Crap, lava oopsie
they were smoothing and digging fortifications, so at least they weren't miners

Otto_K — 21.11.2023
Nooo you killed Onmo Riftlimb the lord consort (i think that was his name) (No idea who the others are tho)
(Looking at legends) It seems Onmo was one of the first humans to ever visit Bannerblunts, maybe the first one

GeeFin — 21.11.2023
Should I do something special for his slab?  Nothing specific jumps to mind

Salvadaddy — 21.11.2023
Damn, now I'm wishing I left a statue space in the spire memorial hall
Though I expected to lose too many to memorialize in statues, since I lost over 50 in my first try

Otto_K — 21.11.2023
Could you make a statue of Onmo, maybe holding one of the divine relics we've found, looking triumphant? Could set up some statues outside the hall, guarding the entrance

Salvadaddy — 21.11.2023
We could dig little divots in the walls to put statues of events and important people of the fort

GeeFin — 21.11.2023
sounds good, will make it of him holding relic triumphantly and burning

GeeFin — 21.11.2023
I'll look for a place, probably near the entrance;  ooooh or maybe up in the tower

I modified the tower a bit, you can see the changes in the pic with the human army
looked really cool, but a bit phallic. unintentionally I'm sure 🙂

Salvadaddy — 22.11.2023
Ah yes, it was a bit more phallic

GeeFin — 22.11.2023
I like the map for that area, it looks like a spaceship (before and after the changes)

Salvadaddy — 22.11.2023
Yeah it does

GeeFin — 04.11.2023
Looks great, but I think we should do something about the walkway that you showed in the bottom right pic.  Any more phallic and it'll need a censor bar

Albreo — 04.11.2023
lol, it's totally accidental.
Guess I shouldn't make it round.

GeeFin — 04.11.2023
round can be okay, just have to avoid the two round rooms connected to a shaft that comes to a point LUL

Accidental phalic symbols just seem to be a human psyche thing lol old as time.

I like the spire and how it is coming together

Liked the historical info too! Background details make everything come alive for me
When adventure mode comes out I'd really love to play an elf or human who was raised in the lands I conquered from them.

Hey, thanks for commenting! I'm happy that you liked the history stuff. Was my first time deep diving at legends and i was surprised how much cool stuff there was, even on a 100 year world. Like the family of night creatures, or the mercs that fought for the goblin army

Stuff like that shows what a deep game this is. We didn't pick the world for cool stories, the lore just happened to be there... Anyway has the rest of the thread been a good read?

Also wow, saw your new fort idea, cool stuff! We're currently playing the sequel to Bannerblunts in Blind's discord:  Bardumiseth, Fightquests. Savage, terrifying, two necromancer towers, legions of ant people, lots of carnage over all. Will make a thread for that too when this is all posted

Year 117, Albreo
Posted [ 24.11.2023 ] on Discord

The year started off peacefully. There's no one to bother us in the spring. So, I went directly in to clean the fort. Apparently, someone has been secretly mass-producing 2600 slurry. So, all that goes into the fire. The ore QSP also has a flaw in that it doesn't hold coal properly so the hauling loop went on for a few years. A lot of other not-so-useful items were also destroyed.

We now have a proper mill room under the metal stockpile. Since we have an unhealthy amount of rice and millet, all that will turn into flour soon. The tower got slightly more colorful. I added a new dining room to the second and third floors and removed the small one underground that has been there since the beginning.

The major event this year is that I managed to catch the sock thief eventually. This guy has been going back and forth from our fort frequently and after I interrogated him he admitted to his crime. Our dwarf who helped commit the crime also got jail time. I also sent the military to raid their base and recover our rightful sock but it's buggy and now teleported into the thief's hand somehow. Anyway, it's currently considered as in the fort. If you're interested you can look through the justice page yourself.

I lost almost all but 1 bar of adamantine to the auto-melting which accidentally hadn't been set up properly and still accept adamantine. So, we only got 7 weapons out of it instead of 18. But there should be more spires underground, I have started to dig a new path to scout for more.

In winter, our archnemesis came, Humans. The biggest siege with the maximum unit came at the right time to test the new blender system. It took a few reloads to get the blender run just right. I closed the outer gate to trap most of them in and blend. The right side minecarts got stuck by the horses and bears but it worked well enough. There's only one caution:  No matter what. Do not fight inside the corridor. Dwarfs like to rush at the minecart and launch it again hitting themself and others.

At the end of the year, The trap is mostly complete. There are more plans to add lava to the moat and load some Galena into the carts for more damage. This year alone, 4 nobles succumbed to stupidity from arriving during the two big sieges.

Oh yeah, the broker was stuck in the count's tomb worshiping instead of trading, I missed the trade with the elves because of it.  I had to remove the tomb zone to get him to leave, but I've remade that since so he could be stuck there again

Albreo — 22.11.2023
Worshiping who? Therd shouldn't be any temple in there doesn't it?

Otto_K — 22.11.2023
I combined the noble tombs and the room between to a temple of the Dead Burial

...

Albreo — 22.11.2023
Apparently, someone angered our trade partner. (Army of dwarves showed up to siege)

Albreo — 23.11.2023
The sock thieves have been caught. He will now be a permanent resident of our jail. Please welcome him.
There's also a person by this name (Lershi Fiercethrows) who stole another artifact. Please report to the guard if you see him.

Albreo — 24.11.2023
some barons and baronesses think it's a good idea to walk through blenders during a siege
Damn, this is so dangerous. The military kept slamming the minecart and hitting other people killing them. Fighting inside this is more dangerous than fighting the whole raid.

That's true! It's like, i know that people probably like the post, as it's getting close to 1000 page loads. But there's a funny psychological effect where the concrete feedback of getting a response just feels better.

Overall i think there's so much to gain from direct communication, even online. I saw that theory in action on minecraft servers a lot, with players helping each other etc. That's a really good word: intentional. I try acting intentionally as well. But yeah, tangent over

This year, the efforts of the dwarves were turned towards surveying the underground for the two missing underworld spires. There was no sieges, which was a welcome change of pace. I should have begun with sending the squads to survey the third cave layer, finding the top of spire that way. Instead I had the dwarves digging upwards for 100 layers.

I started digging at -110, digging stairways up, skirting the spire’s edge. I accidentally breached a lava pocket, killing a miner. Finally, I found the tops of two spires at -13, at the red cave’s level.

Digging upwards, a miner breached the red caverns, and was immediately assaulted by Uno Ashdied the forgotten beast, a towering one-eyed mite.

Honestly, this was pretty exciting, as I had been itching to go FB hunting in this fort. The squads were sent to deal with the invader, and Axe Lord Fath Magicpulleys chopped the beast down to size. She graciously gave the militia commander the honor of last hit, which she did by crushing the beast’s head.

There was a regrettable complication where Uno’s noxious secretions caused multiple dwarves’ bodies to rot. Both Fath and the commander seemingly survived without injury.

The caves have become so overgrown with trees that there's forgotten beasts just stuck in the narrow parts. Thus, the dwarves were able to safely chop down some of the cave trees near the stairwell in the third cavern layer, under a generous quota from the elves. Tons of cave animal bones were also harvested.

There's a crippled, nigh unkillable FB in the cavern. Made of flame so its body is constantly obstructed by smoke, making it difficult to even land a hit. I just walled off that section.

I started emptying the spire's top lava pockets with a sort of pump-and-dissipate method, it’s a bit slow work but reliable. Found a lot of new gold veins while looking for the spires. More gold pedestals were forged for upgrading some guildhalls with shiny valuable junk. I saw that the pillar room was cleaned of stockpile hell by previous administation, and therefore left without purpose. So I decided to turn it into the crafters’ sanctum, with a closed off bone stockpile adjacent.

All mourn!
Zulban Lekkulet is dead! The former militia commander passed away of old age while worshiping in the guild hall district. He went in peace, I’m sure. He was the militia commander from 101 until 109. He created Soundlistens the artefact copper battle axe in year 99 in Rapidship. He was of the first generation of dwarves.

Reading the Legends

Zulban Bristleabbeys

So, Zulban Lekkulet, our former militia commander. I thought he was just a common Urist, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Turns out, he's very special indeed. His son, you see, was the baron of Gildcrystal, the lost fortress. Killed at its defence by that cancerous monster, Guthstak. That must have been a hard one: losing a son, and also knowing that your son's rule ended in one of the great tragedies of this dwarven civilization. Zulban had many other kids, though. And it's good to see that he kept himself together and served Bannerblunts well.

What I didn't know about Guthstak, though, is that it's an enormous chickadee, which is a cute lil bird apparently. Though it also squirms and fidgets, has lidless eyes, and shoots webs, so not so cute maybe.

Zutthan Onulgim

The miner who died after breaching a lava pocket? I found out that she's been slandered by Legends mode itself. It says that she bled to death, killed by the honey badger Partnerpapers. That's not true, she bled to death while melting in lava. No honey badgers were involved! This seems to be a bug in Legends, where the last creature to cause an injury will be scored as the killer.

She originally came from the Avalanche of Influence civ as a dancer, and she was an ardent worshiper of one of their gods, Nekol the Quiescent. She's the god of silence, crafts, creation, rebirth and death. So she's a death goddess as well! I like the gods of death in this world a lot...

Year 119, Salvadaddy
Posted [ 07.12.2023 ] on Discord

I started the year off strong by nearly letting in a web shooting FB through a door I thought was locked, but fortunately, it decided to attack a magma crab, so I decided to check out the fight and found it at our doorstep

I began mining out the second spire, and quickly discovered the second hell tube. I made some space around it and essentially spent the rest of my turn going down it, since I uncovered the midsection of the tube so the clown car was all the way at the top, giving me time to plug it from the top. It took me a while before I finally moved the block stockpile closer to the project site and damn I wish I had done so a lot sooner because that saved tremendous amounts of time. By the end of the turn, I had touched the surface of the underworld and built a few walls, before a pair of gecko devils came.

One of the devils killed my favorite goblin miner Em, which was sad, and arguably worse, it keeps excreting it's noxious secretions, so it is constantly keeping the combat log open. May need to DF hack kill it, unless we can get the stupid marksdwarves working, which I've also been trying to do, to no avail

Other than all that, there was a magma accident that cost I think 5 lives. That, in addition to Em, some random dwarf who didn't come inside during a siege, and a stupid dwarf who went through the blender, means we lost about 8 people my turn; the most in a while, I believe. The reason I turned on the blenders was because a dragon appeared, which really worried me. All that worrying was for naught, however, as it was captured in a cage trap and now adorns the general temple. Also, it didn't start a forest fire, despite torching some pigs when it entered the map

Finally, we got 2 artifacts this year: a giant cave toad bone door, which is being used to help seal the second hell tube, and an adamantine mace. And that concludes my turn. Strike the Earth!

So we just lost 3 dwarves; 1 because they were slower than magma, and 2 because the dumbasses didn't think "hm maybe I should leave" when they saw the lava approaching
And I guess we'll lose another because they just decided to walk through the undoubtedly hot door

GeeFin — 06.12.2023

Early on I had the human welcoming committee visit the fort. They had no issue getting through the central entryway, but were otherwise blocked by the traps in the upper right. I replaced the traps in the central path again, hopefully it keeps the next batch from getting as far inside

I lost 4 dwarves and a human to surprise lava in the spires. I opened a large magma tube above the recently found spire, but it was too much magma and filled up the whole area. I did manage to get some more gems just above that level,  but there was no adamantine access from there. I did manage to get a bunch more adamantine between -61 and -63 though.

I decided to replace some of the entryway floor mushrooms with jet floors. And I switched the microcline stones to koala-night blocks for the stoneworker's workshops

We made three more artifacts and found several more relics in the basement too. I also made it so that only one magma smelter is melting stuff, that way we don't end up with as many invisible portions of metal blocks in all our smelters.

We have a three-way FBs fight early in the year with the victory belonging to the fluffy crocodile. Also, That guy in the sewer managed to escape and died on the way out. Did a bit of cleaning, surprisingly not too bad although someone has been secretly making 3000 shale blocks. Also, abolish a goblet stockpile. Don't make a stockpile for it people. It's a waste of dwarf time. I put some of the bards back into the tavern proportionately. Also, to prevent a bar fight I have excluded all beer stockpiles from the tavern zones.

The missing squad leader has been reappointed, also, start training some more spare. The crossbow squad is now fixed and under training. I gave everyone an adamantine shield and also got rid of all useless bolts but steel. The new archery range is next to the old glamorous barrack. On top, there's a new arrow tower with a patrol route in place. Currently, only set to patrol during the first months. Haven't had time to switch everyone's weapon to adamantine yet.

I did a bit of spire digging in the north to replenish some adamantine bars. One dwarf burned in the process. R.I.P., the legendary engraver.

In autumn, A roc came and died to the silver balls. Its skull is put in the doctor's guild along with its brethren. I went to raid our former trade partner a bit. Turns out their main fortress has so many artifacts and there are still more. A load of books for our misty library.

The ongoing noble purge should continue. If some visitor suddenly dies inside the fort, do not be alarmed. There's no fixing it. There are 3 more new nobles who haven't had room yet. I have set noble demands to be way less, not the max yet, so don't worry about having more and getting headaches with their demands. Also, turn some cave invader back on so the cave get some action.

The Trap continues to get new upgrades with a way to release the dragon if you ever want to but do note that most of the trap might be destroyed in the process. The king artifact chain is now on the dragon's neck. The ballistas outside are just for shooting trees for fun. The bear room gets some love as well.

The fire beast gets the first hit!! The webs all burn away and get the upper hand. The blind lobster still surveying the main stair.

Oh, the lobster has a unique way of joining the fray with wall climbing. It runs away while the other two still duke it out. The dinosaur is very tanky.
