Ghouls, Necromancy, Feverish Goo, and !!SCIENCE!! all in a small space. Smallhands started as a little succession fortress for weak computers/laptops, but quickly grew into much more with lone survivors, invincible echidnas, suicidal Forgotten Beasts, and experiments with resurrection. Check out the first truly unkillable dwarf: Nogood, the lone survivor: Salmeuk, the Necromancer Hunter: KingZultan, and best damn tavern keeper who even death won't slow down: Recon. Great stories abound in this small package!Backup (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16582)
Never seen a fortress resemble post-WWII Germany before.
Let us be frank, gentlemen. Killer herds of undead grazing animals? Battle donkeys? Identical goblins? Dedicated necropoli? Artifice barrels? Slime lakes? Shit monsters? Forgotten beast incursions through artifact gem windows? Anti-gravity miners with fey moods?
Battlefailed is 2010's Boatmurdered.
I have no idea where anything is. I have no idea what anything does. This is not merely a madhouse designed by a madman, but a madhouse designed by many madmen, each with an intense hatred for the previous madman's unique flavour of madness.
Like a perfectly pleasant little tundra fortress still busy getting its stuff together, that somebody painted a lovely shade of murder.
Gemclod: let's all get killed and eaten
Gemclod is a "let's play" ran in 2010-2011 in the true spirit of SomethingAwful's succession games with tons of reader collaboration. Perhaps the largest Dwarf Fortress story so far, Gemclod has about 350 official updates, about the same number of fan journals, several dozens of pictures and even 13 custom-made pieces of music. Come join the last surviving members of the "Famous Palisade" in their desperate bit to found a fortress in a sinister swamp, far from the eyes of greenskins, the Arrogant Ones and grizzly bears. Only there can they build a splendid, amazing, truly fabulous Great Hall.
I've really run this fort into the ground. Half the military is dead or insane from the horrors of hell, six or so forsaken beasts are locked away in the caverns, the road into Deathgate has been painted with troll blood, we've slaughtered about 400 innocent animals via liberal application of a boot to the ass, a deer with its liver hanging out of its chest after two siege bolts to the face is still scaring the piss out of people using the old doom-bridge, and we have about a dozen ghosts routinely harassing our dwarves since I can't find or reach their corpses. As I speak, lava is pouring down the side of the mountain in the hopes it burns some of those damned goblins sieging us to death or at least drives them towards the troll-blood bridge. On the flip side, Armok's temple is almost complete and we've stolen enough goods from the humans to piss them off for a good decade.
It is really, really easy to flood this place with magma fwiw.
Doors stop fire, right?
So, let me get this straight. I have been the play-thing of gods and their vampire servants, I have led the unwashed masses into a new age of splendour and military accomplishment. I have died, and risen again. The power of flame and sword, of divine wrath itself, was not enough to stop me. I have battled zombies, had their grasping hands inches from my neck and still come out on top. My influence helped to purge the spirits of the undead from the halls of the fortress and returned a fellow being back into the halls of life. I spat in the eye of Armok himself!Backup (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12471)
All that, I have done. I have seen the rise and fall of many suns and moons, the turning of the world and one season blending into another in a dizzying blend. And it all ends in a muddy field with a bloody yak goring me. In true Necrothreat spirit, what a Troll
When Battlefailed fell, there were attempts to reclaim it and continue the awesome. They failed, the fort was flooded beyond belief and apparently no longer playable. They gave up and made Failcannon nearby. But then several months later. This happened. -TV Tropes Community Page
Gen a new HUGE world, and start playing from YEAR ONE. That would mean super low population. Super High Titan and mega beast population. And it would mean each Dwarf is "the first of their kind" No kids yet, no epic warriors, no time for anything. So EVERYTHING is new and from scratch.Backup (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16620)
An aboveground farming-based fort which exports each and every ounce of food whenever a caravan stopped by, Breadbowl soon became menaced by goblins, titans, and worst of all, Hamsters.Backup (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12996)
Dwarf Fortress is often lauded as one of the most complicated games of all time. The interface is opaque, the learning curve a cliff. It's hard enough for experienced players to keep their forts safe and secure on the best of days. So, what happens when a bunch of players play a succession fort while completely inebriated?
After days of travel, she had arrived at the spot the princess had commanded. It was hot, and humid. The sound of a stream could be heard nearby, according to the map the stream was called, Bleachedroot the Pranks of Coincidence. The area was thick with plant life, and heavily forested with trees that looked unnatural, it seemed as if the very forest itself was hostile to the presence of the few terrified ponies. Charity decided that they would name the new fortress something happy, something to show that it was a shining point of civilization, inside the harsh and unforgiving jungle, and so it was decided that this would be Glitterglen, Strike the Earth!
Okay, sure, we came out here to strip-mine the local landscape, and trained a squad of axe-wielding child soldiers to slaughter the indigenous population as well as murder an ancient being's family and friends one by one right in front of him. Yes, Sinthad's life has been so brutal and bloody that she is little more than a dead-eyed killer at 19. Yes, the arrival of a kindly and just King did nothing to improve the lives of the dwarves, because the problem is not people like Logem but rather the entire dwarven culture. Yes, Glazedcoast is a glass box filled with mud and dead plants, covered in sickening phlegm, below which sits a festering hole leading deep into the bowels of the earth; yes, its major exports are weapons and suffering; yes, there is not a single family that has not lost a child to monsters or the arrogance of the military. I have had endangered birds shot and left their bodies to rot on the ground. I allowed a four-hundred-year-old vampire queen to be ripped limb from limb to discover the limits of her powers. I have thrown innocents into battle with vicious goblins simply because the amazing works of art they produced did not amaze me quite enough. I have made pies out of puppies.
This is grim? This is monstrous? THIS. IS. DWARF! FORTRESS!
*kicks human ambassador into a pit full of captured goblins; puts on gem-studded human-hair crown*
For being a story based on books about bloody cats, it is exceedingly Dwarven.
Plus, their Dwarves are somehow surviving without throats. That's hardcore.
25th Moonstone, 182, Early Winter - Water flooding of the top of guildhalls began this month, but with the sealed passages between the buildings accidentally closed off, the dwarves (restricted to the interior of the halls, via burrows) pathed along the exterior avenues. Four dwarves perished when water flow pushed them off of the streets to fall many z-levels to their deaths. Additionally, one dwarf died on the surface, slain by a goblin ambush before the military could rush to protect him. The total fortress population has been reduced to 96, with no new dwarves having been born since 157.Backup (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16618)
The amount of malice in this thread is actually causing me some concern. I mean, chaining up mothers and forcing them to breed, just so we can drown their children to harvest their organs? Does this strike no one else as absolutely horrific?
You misspelled 'hilarious'
SO. I don't know if this is all going to lead to a functioning A.I, but at the very least when the above is installed and everything linked up, I will have essentially made the very first dwarfputed notepad. Hurray!
It's like regular childcare, except with more dogs, and less care.
...
The only issue is trying to get the child to survive without going berzerk. But then again, that might just turn into training for the other caged children, right?
Design ideas or implementation, anyone?
Well, this one would be a fine example for "Signs that you play Dwarf fortress (way) too much" thread.

Congratulations Immortal-D o/ Even tho I have absolutely zero idea what HoL is.The rules do in fact state that any entry can be removed by author's request, which I assume includes nominees, so I will take Mong Kima off the list.
Just posting to say, I have absolutely zero pretention for the HoL, but it's actually written Mong Kima, with a G. Like the human word for Nation.
Edit : That is, if you want to keep it there. I really would prefer not to be. If it doesn't enfringe some kind of rule, could it be removed?
Have fun o/

Second, I would like to propose a new rule for Succession Games. The current rule states that it is bad form to nominate your own thread, which is fine. Given the excitable nature of said games, I propose that anyone who participates in a Succession be ineligible to vote for it.
I'd also be against the new rule. That seems like hardly any succession forts would make it in, since people who enjoy them usually take a turn. Also, it would give a major advantage to suggestion games. From what I understand, the understanding of why rules are implemented helps a lot--the rule, as I recall, was to alleviate any sense of self-boosting, that would let the community do it instead (ie Everyone else voting for the fort in question). Good things on paper, this doesn't necessarily include anyone else from doing it, and people's enjoyability at times rises when they're part of the scenario. I'd be against that rule reform of 'any participant is ineligible to vote for it' and more for a reform alongside 'quality > quantity' since votes also depend on who is active and wants to post rather than people really feeling good about it and then posting: Pertaining to the middle ground. :P Had that issue with the RtD Hall of Fame where I PM'd NAV about some games having more votes than others, which implies quality, so the # of votes was removed and all are there equally (although votes are needed for it to enter).
I believe in you Immortal-D!I was just about to bring this up.After some careful scrutiny, I've realised that monk12 never added Adventures on Monster Island (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101941.0) to the HoL, despite it having garnered enough votes to do so.I.......I somehow forgot to add Adventures on Monster Island to the Hall. Query for everyone; I've been thinking about if we need a separate Adventure Mode section. This was carried over from NAV's thread, but I'm not sure there is enough variety to warrant it. All Adventure Modes go to the Stories section by default. Is there enough variety or desire to separate those from purely written stories? How would we handle the 1-shots like Fluffly Wambler vs. Bronze Colossus?

I vote for Necrothreat IV, then.
In light of the impending changes, my votes are cheaper, so have a +1 to Necrothreat IV. It's already the longest necrothreat by far, and the story is much preferable to III.
i love how people in this fort thought one extremely flawed flooding device wasn't enough, so they built another extremely flawed flooding device that has to be cleaned up using the first one, which has itself been modified at least twice (once to fix it flooding the fort, and then again to. . . make it flood the fort again. We're good at this.)
I'd like to nominate THROWBACK FORTRESS: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=156873.msg6863647#msg6863647Throwback Fortress becomes our first Nominee of December, and most likely the last one of the year. Roomcarnage actually has a story, so I'm definitely in favor of keeping it in Stories. The story of Roomcarnage is fantastic, to be sure. I'm personally more taken with the engineering & architecture the author accomplished, but that's just me. Since it's in Stories already, I guess it can stay there. Shame there's no dual category, lol. For descriptions, that seems like a sensible order. I think I'm gonna add that to the official rules in the OP.
For the preface, I would go, in order of priority:
OP's description (if obtained directly) > Nominator's description (current system) > Immortal-D's description (if no preface is provided by either OP or nominator)
Just my two cents.

Err ... I thought I had a year from nomination, not calendar year. I rather revoke this nomination and put it up again in January and then do it again in December since I doubt 10 votes will happen in a week. Especially since it has to sit for a month before it can be voted on, no?
1 vote for The Illustrated Dwarf, not that it matters.

wait what, why are we purging 2016 entries?2016? What 2016? Everyone knows that Gregory XIII, in his efforts to rehabilitate his notoriously unlucky number, conceived of a plan to transfer the stigma to another, namely 16. As such, when he reordered the calendar, all years ending in "17" were made to follow those ending in "15." Any rumors of a year yclept "2016" are the result of spurious fearmongering, likely originating from subversives of the Julian persuasion...

wait what, why are we purging 2016 entries? The original rules state a time limit for nominees. Although only nominally enforced, I do approve of a 1-year limit on nominees. The HoL relies on participation, even during slow periods, and without some kind of limit, a nominee could potentially remain in the roster for years. 2016 entries that were removed can always be nominated again. The time limit rule also remains up for debate; if there is enough concern, we can increase the limit and bring back 2016 entries for a while longer.
1 vote for Cog the Blind Drunk! What a hilarious adventure.+1 to Cog the Blind Drunk. I started reading it tonight, good stuff :) I've also done some very minor format editing on the Nominees section.

Yeah, Ill throw in a vote for whisperwhip. Some of the storytelling is great, and it's also fun to watch someone learning the game and incorporating that into the narrative.
Decided to read whisperwhip. Definitely worth immortalizing in this hall. Put a vote in for it for me.Another two for Whisperwhip makes 7 votes.

Steelclutches is down a vote from me.
I feel that if a story is to make it into the Hall of Legends it should be...Legendary.
Compared to Boatmurdered or Cacame...Bad examples, nothing is as good as them.
Whisperwhip is a better example. Hilarity and excellent writing with a role-played plot tied in. That's worth a vote (and it has mine if it needs it).
I feel Steelclutches is standard fare for an evil biome, and not very unique in terms of story. Sorry :/
Hi- first post from me. Sorry if placement is not correct. You've come to the right place! However, the Monsterkiller series is only 5 months old. HoL rules state that a story needs to have a bit of staying power, meaning at least
Kruggsmash- "Monsterkiller". Great humour, awesome art, beautifully produced, newest version of dwarf fortress. It gets my vote.
Do the Hall of Legends rules even allow down-voting? I mean, it's hard enough for a story to even get 10 votes in the first place. As a matter of fact, it does not. An entry can have its' status revoked if there evidence of foul play (whatever that may be), or is otherwise found to be against the spirit of the game.
We reddit now.The hell we do, lol. So long as I'm running this thread, we are like a billion times more civil and drunk than all of Reddit. That said, the DF Reddit sub is actually super chill.
If we can vote on something off forum, then yes, I'll vote for Steelclutches (as a whole, for the four seasons). Clearly it deserves a place here.
That's a new category, I think. Kruggsmash is a popular Dwarf Fortress Youtube channel, for anyone considering votes.Steelclutches is qualified for nomination and has been added to the August Submissions. You can find the first entry here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p-uqLXoIR4 I also agree that a separate category is required, but I'll figure that out if & when I need to.
According to the rules, we have to wait a month after something has been nominated before we can vote for it.Quite right. Originally, this rule was meant to allow discussion of a nominee before committing to a vote. However, in light of the age requirement for nominees and the generally diminished activity here, I'd be in favor of suspending it for the time being.
It finished at the time of that post actually. :P

Hi- first post from me. Sorry if placement is not correct.
Kruggsmash- "Monsterkiller". Great humour, awesome art, beautifully produced, newest version of dwarf fortress. It gets my vote.
Is it possible to nominate a game that was done by 1 person on youtube to the hall of legends? Because if so, I'd like to nominate Kruggsmash's brilliantly made and storied tale of Ushangvagush, Monster Killer. *snip* Ushangvagush (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm99232lrWw&list=PLXX7Rp0iXj0naNSnNOjERRGJjbkDNtcMa)The Youtube series 'Monsterkiller' was recently brought to attention here. With the new rules in place, it will be eligible for nomination next month (though this may change).
Edit: While my mind is on the details of our HoL; Right now we have it so that the person who nominates something counts as the first vote. Should that stay?
I was thinking that the nominator would not count as the first vote, since that effectively makes the requirement 9 instead of 10. However, that would likely be more confusing than it's worth.Edit: While my mind is on the details of our HoL; Right now we have it so that the person who nominates something counts as the first vote. Should that stay?
That makes total sense. I don't see why we'd have to ask nominators to re-vote on the thing they themselves suggested.
I support the new rules.Good to know :) I wasn't certain about the specifics of the time requirements, just going with my gut right now.
My vote to Ageless Realm series. So maybe let's wait for what might follow ushengvagush? (even tough we had an epic ending he might recycle the world) at least until his next video ;DI'm afraid I'm not familiar with this. Is Ageless Realm another Youtube series?
I'd like to voice my support to the story Cog the Blind Drunk for taking an absurd idea and rolling with it. Dwarfy, amusing, and a good candidate for the Hall.Another notch for Cog.
+1, Cog the Blind Drunk.
Throwing in my vote for Steelclutches series.Steelcluthces receives its' first (technically second) vote.
The ageless realms is the series of four adventures encapsulating the Steelclutches fortress.Ahh, ok. I'll take that as a vote for Steelclutches then. If the author ever does something unrelated in the same world, then we can consider grouping it all together. So, +1 to Steelclutches from dragdeler.
I also cast my vote for the Steelclutches Saga
+1 vote for the Steelclutches saga :) :)Steelclutches hits 5 votes.

The forum thread of Bronzemurder seems to be missing an image. If it doesn't violate any rules I'd suggest linking to the comic on what I believe is the artists official website: https://www.timdenee.com/bronzemurderDone. I also reordered his 2 stories in the list.

Seconded!
In that case, has anyone nominated either Kruggsmash's Honeystoker? If not, I would like to do so. If so.. then his Monsterkiller fort. If both have been nominated well.. then I guess I'll stand down, lol.
I only just started on part 1 (first episode, been distracted); but I loved Honeystoker :o

Thirded, I was actually under the impression that it was already in here.
Fourthed, I also assumed it was already in.
a vote from me as well
I’ll give another vote to LIF.
That's a vote from me as well, this wasn't in already?
+1 to Losing is Fun
+1 To Losing is Fun.Technically missed the review period, but that's on me, so we're going to roll with it. Losing Is Fun (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=164165.0) is at 9 votes.
i'm tossing my vote in for ModdedHell
Oh yes, +1 to Modded Hell too please. That thing is glorious.Modded Hell (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=167813.0) should have been removed in August per the 1 year rule, which means it would now hit 7 votes being 1&1/2 years old. An argument in favor of 2 year life time for voting? I'm going to add the 2 votes with a disclaimer for now.
I don't know if Honeystoker is the same as Steelclutches tbh. Like Modded Hell, this entry technically should have been out after 1 year, but I'm going to add the vote to Steelclutches as a disclaimer for the time being.I only just started on part 1 (first episode, been distracted); but I loved Honeystoker :o
Honeystoker was epic. +1 to that.
Hey guys! Did anyone forget about the great Russian Likot Ubendeb interactive adventure series? Awesome artwork, crazy, complicated plot and Oglaf-style humor! There are about 6 animated shots now, and an audiobook (in Russian. CoOP will appreciate any help in English version production!). It seems weird to me that this thing, in which, so to say, CoOP has put a lot of work is still left unappreciated. And finally, a new nomination; Likot Ubendeb.

Today I realized that Loud Whisper's "Ravens are murder (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=146908)" never made it to the Hall of Legends. A travesty! I hereby nominate it for induction.
+1 from me as well. Not only is ravens taking over hell hilarious, but the fort itself is an actual accomplishment.Today I realized that Loud Whisper's "Ravens are murder (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=146908)" never made it to the Hall of Legends. A travesty! I hereby nominate it for induction.
Wait, really? Isn't that the undead-ravens-versus-hell thing? That's quite famous.
+1
Ravens are murder is not in the Hall already!? Another +1 from me.I myself give it a +1
Steelclutches is the first long series Krugg did, with Monsterkiller being the second and Honeystoker the third.
Personally I feel like his whole channel is just one big piece of art worthy of recognition.
+1 HoneystokerKruggsmash's whole bit reaches 8 votes. Combined with being over a year old, Steelcluthes and other series doesn't make the cut this time.
BreadBowl is no longer active, and has now gained 2 sequels, one of which is officially also non-active. If I didn't do so a year ago, I vote for Modded Hell.Modded Hell also hits 8 votes over 1 year, and is removed from Nominees. Just for emphasis, I repeat that anything can be nominated again if deemed truly worth.
+1 for Likot Ubendeb

Hey, just thought I should let you know the link to the Boatmurdered wiki page is broken. Here's a working replacement. (https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Bloodline:Boatmurdered)Fixed, thank you!

+1 for Likot.And Likot hits 4.

I had the same problem and Teneb provided a simple solution! Now I just have to figure out why my avatar stopped working :-\
For some unknown reason, the field in your details page where you put the address of your avatar only accepts addresses starting with "HTTP://" meaning Imgur won't work any longer as it is "HTTPS://". That's all I got, *shrugs*
Is Bridgedflickered (https://coalpoweredpress.com/comic/bridgedflickered-lay-land/) on here? If not, it has my vote.Bridgeflickered joines the Nominees with 1 vote.
Make that 5. +1
+1 for LikotThe saga of Likot has 6 votes.
I nominate Modded Hell again
Really, that thing deserves the recognition.
+1 To Modded Hell.
+1 again to modding hell. It might have ended (?) abruptly, but the attempt itself is worthy of mention.Per the rules, Modded Hell is nominated a second time, effective May 2020, and has 3 votes.
BreadBowl is no longer active, and has now gained 2 sequels, one of which is officially also non-active.I swore I'd updated this, but apparently not. Breadbowl is moved to Retired.
+1 To Modded Hell.
It might have ended (?) abruptly, but the attempt itself is worthy of mention.I don't know if this is the place for this, but I could probably start it up again in a week or two if people want that. I tried messing around with some new world with those raws for my own entertainment and they didn't work because apparently nonaggressive Towers coming to trade hard crashes the game. That, and I played as a Koopa empire that apparently annexed another empire of creatures that functioned as vampires, so half the fortress would drink the blood of the other half of the fortress. That being said, original Modded Hell should still be in a functioning state.

Can forum games be nominated?Yes. Absolutely. There is a forum game section in the Hall of Legends for a reason.
Those go here Roll to Dodge Hall of Fame & Library. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=174399.msg8005069#msg8005069)Technically that is only for Roll to Dodge games, which is a specific style of forum game in a specific subforum.

It suddenly occurs to me... I have The Dwarven Language Codified (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=173289.225) bookmarked on my web browser.
I have it bookmarked because it's unique, and fascinating, and possibly useful should I ever want to write something in Dwarfish.
These are good things. These are things lots of Bay12ers should get to see!
I nominate "The Dwarven Language Codified" to the Hall of Legends.

No clue what category it falls under, but that's a problem for future Immortal-D.

+1The Dwarven Language Codified is nominated in August with 3 votes to its' name.
That's right, I just went back and read the first post. My mistake. Happy it has been nominated though.
I thought that nominations could not be voted for until after their first month of candidacy?I'm now questioning the practicality of that rule. It sounds good in theory, but in practice it hasn't made a difference. On average, if a nominee is to become legendary, it usually happens very quickly regardless. There are exceptions, but for the most part people know what they like, and there is rarely discussion of merits.
A bisexual space-witch questions existence and her place in the universe.A young woman awakens in a dingy hut. Suffering from amnesia, she discovers herself through the battles she fights and the wars she wages. Slowly, she begins to discover her place in a high sci-fi universe filled with wonder and terror. Inspired by the works of Hideaki Anno and Eiichiro Oda.

It seems unfair that Adventures of Likot Ubendeb isn't in Hall of Legends.I agree. It's epic.
I thought we already voted to get it in.It seems unfair that Adventures of Likot Ubendeb isn't in Hall of Legends.I agree. It's epic.
This is the correct place. Take a look at what the previous archivist said:I'd already forgotten that this has happened before.
I thought we already voted to get it in.It seems unfair that Adventures of Likot Ubendeb isn't in Hall of Legends.I agree. It's epic.
There is not enough activity to make a vote practical, so I'm using my discretion here. The 1 month waiting between nomination and voting is suspended for now. If in the future we start seeing like 4 or 5 nominations per month, it will be reinstated. The Dwarven Language Codified can be voted upon by those who wish to.That's right, I just went back and read the first post. My mistake. The Dwarven Language Codified gets my vote too. It's quite an undertaking, and very thorough.
+1 to DLCDwarven Language Codified hits 5 votes, which does include those from the previous update.
It's a good idea to go through the nominees every now and then.Bridgeflickered now has 2.
+1 to Bridgeflickered.
I'd like to nominate McCreary's Planet (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175587.0), a suggestion game. Can it be voted for now or is it necessary to wait a month?Just as a reminder; The 6 month age minimum is a rule I am enforcing. The nominee was posted February 9, which makes it 6 months old as of two days ago. Using my discretion, the 1-month waiting period is on hold for now.A bisexual space-witch questions existence and her place in the universe.A young woman awakens in a dingy hut. Suffering from amnesia, she discovers herself through the battles she fights and the wars she wages. Slowly, she begins to discover her place in a high sci-fi universe filled with wonder and terror. Also +1 to McCreary’s Planet.McCreary's Planet join the nominees at 2 votes.
It seems unfair that Adventures of Likot Ubendeb isn't in Hall of Legends.
I thought we already voted to get it in.You did, and it's still there. The required number of votes changed to 10 when I took over, following discussions immediately upon creation of the new Hall. I feel this is still valid, as is the 1 year limit on nominees. Likot has 6 votes and will remain nominated until December 2020.
It seems a bit strange to increase the number of votes necessary for the hall, when overall activity in this forum seems to be declining.I gave this a lot of thought when I started, and there was a fair bit of discussion early on as well. If the community was only a couple hundred strong, I would agree. However, the DF community (even just looking at recent active users) numbers a lot more. While there has been reduced overall activity in this sub-forum, total users across the boards is more or less stable. Ten votes over a whole year is not a serious obstacle for a group this size, I don't think. I am of course open to debate as ever, if anybody has 2 coppers on the issue.
Another +1 to McCreary's Planet.McCreary notches another +1.
+1Another +1 to McCreary's Planet.McCreary notches another +1.
+1 McCrearyThis tale hits 4.
may i add a vote to bridgeflickered? If you mouse-over the vote total, you can see the names of everyone who has voted. So yes, yes you can. Bridgeflickered is now at 3.
Not sure if my vote would count as I created the thread but I am also merely a translator so +1 to Likot if that's allowed.Translation and other archiving is just fine. Likot reaches 7 votes.
can i nominate Dawnthunder as a candidate? http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=173393.msg7937728#msg7937728Well over 6 months old, so that's just fine. Dawnthunder is nominated as of September 2020.
the fortress of duped raws and general chaos
I'll chuck a vote onto Likot as well. Well deserving at this point just for how long it is.Delphonso over here throwing around his fat edits. Truly shameful :P A point each to Likot (8.) and Bridgeflickered (4).
Fat Edit
My vote hasn't counted yet so I'm hoping you haven't seen this yet in order to avoid a double post. I'd also like to vote for Dawnthunder (you've misspelled the name on the first page, btw)
And for Bridgeflickered while I'm at it.
I would like to vote for Dawnthunder, as well.
I'm dropping a vote for Dawnthundered.Dawnthundered adds both +3 and correct spelling.
I vote for Likot Ubendeb.+1 for Likot, which has reached the 1 year threshold. The nomination will remain for a little bit, pending any input about the aforementioned.
Maybe 8 votes in a year? That sounds good to me.
Evenin Dorfs. While I'm still not certain about the vote limit, I have said before that I will not be strict about the cutoff, and with a 10th vote a couple days past, Likot Ubendeb (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=109582.0) joins the immortals as a Legendary Story (and a very much active one, to boot). Congratulations to the author, and big thanks to CountAlex for the translations and other media links.
I would like to nominate Smallhands: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175473.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175473.0)
Ghouls, Necromancy, Feverish Goo, and !!SCIENCE!! all in a small space. Also the home of the first truly unkillable dwarf.
+1 To smallhands.
Thanks for the nomination, fat_cat. If it's not too self-satisfying, I'll vote formy childSmallhands.
I also deliver a +1 to SmallHands.
+1 for Smallhands
+1 to smallhands
Would you ever take recommendations for YouTube content?Kruggsmash has been nominated in the past as 'the collective works of...'. If you want to highlight a specific story, that's fine. Otherwise he'll be added as a general artist / storyteller.
Kruggsmash makes some epic content... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j05mr5F69H0
It's too hard to pick out any specific tale, so as an epic general artist / storyteller, the collective works of Kruggsmash gets a vote from me too.
Just need one more vote to put Kruggsmash in the Hall of Fame.

+1 to Smallhands
+1 to Smallhands
+1 to Smallhands. Certainly the most interesting community fort I've been a part of!
I just noticed that despite several votes for Dawnthunder, there has only been one actually recorded. I thought I should point that out.
Eh, why not. I'll toss Smallhands that tenth vote. I've been reading it this whole time after all.Smallhands (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175473.0) is recognized as a Legendary Succession Fort. Party hats indeed :) I trimmed the synopsis of Drunk Fort a bit, and removed the finished/active tags, since most Legends fall into the former category anyways. Will be doing the same for the other categories. Stay warm my fellow Dorfs.
After review, I would like to cast a vote for The Dwarven Language Codified. Such an effort is worth legendary status in my mind.
If I haven’t given it my vote already, I vote for the Dearven language codified. If I already have voted for it... I’ll go over to the ditch of shame, don’t mind me.Dwarven language codified reaches 6 (Imic already voted).
Casting a vote for McCreary's Planet.And a +1 to McCreary makes 5.
(Imic already voted)Time for the ditch of shame!
If you mouse-over the vote total, it shows a list of names.(Imic already voted)Time for the ditch of shame!
I cast a vote for The Dwarven Language Codified, an impressive work.
I'll also vote for The Dwarven Language Codified.
I would like to add my vote to The Dwarven Language Codified.I searched and this seems like a General Topics thread, not a game thread, unless I missed something?

Nominees need not be from a specific part of the Bay12 forums, nor is their format or subject matter a consideration- it merely needs to be worthy of preservation. Nominees that are not local to the Bay12 forums should be marked as such. To avoid suspicion of favoritism, I shall neither nominate nor vote for any nominee, no matter how deserving. I reserve the right to trim/alter synopses as I see fit (mostly to maintain a reasonable length).
I would like to add my vote to The Dwarven Language Codified.
I would now like to submit my vote for The Dwarven Language Codified, and I believe that makes 10!With the final vote added a few days past the deadline, The Dwarven Language Codified (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=173289.0) becomes a Legendary Archive! For the sake of clarifying precedent; I've said before that the cutoff will not be strict. A few days past is fine, maybe a week if the final vote has a really good reason. Any longer than that would need consideration.
And just for emphasis. Any suitably Dwarfy work may be considered here. One of my personal favorite stories (that I've since saved locally just in case) is Glazedcoast, hosted on some random-ass gaming forum from ages past.I would like to add my vote to The Dwarven Language Codified.I searched and this seems like a General Topics thread, not a game thread, unless I missed something?
Quoth the main page, bolded and underlined for clarity:Nominees need not be from a specific part of the Bay12 forums, nor is their format or subject matter a consideration- it merely needs to be worthy of preservation. So, to the best of my understanding, threads from General Topics and elsewhere on or off Bay12 can indeed be recommended for inclusion in the HoL (such as the Battle of the Gods series (Forum Games and RP), Elves of Amanereli (also FGaRP), everything in the Roll to Dodge category) so long as ten members of the site deem it sufficiently memorable/high-quality/ingenious/lulzy to be worthy of preservation.
Apropos stories from out of the forum, I’d like to nominate the Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament, held anually over at the subreddit. As of today, the Sixth Tournament (https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/pmzxy9/dwarf_fortress_gladiator_tournament_vi_finale/) had its finale, so I think it is ripe for nomination. To be clear, I’m nominating all the tournaments together, as an ongoing story, not the tournament from any single year.
The Gladiator tournament (and its cousin, Kruggsmash's Splatterface Tournaments) has been a good source of adventurer inspiration for me for a bit. +1
+1 to the tournaments.
I'm going to +1 the tournaments as well.
+1 for Thob Goes to the surface.
+1 Tournaments from me
+1 for the tournaments. Always a joy to read about them.
+1 for tournaments - even though I've never made it past the quarterfinals. Damned Cheetah Women...
In the interest of full disclosure, I have written at least a little bit of one of the tournaments past (and particpated personally) - it might affect whether my vote counts or not, but +1 for the tournaments
Oh damn! The Gladiator Tourneys! For anyone with an old nostalgia trip that I just had, take a look at the first few that I ran here on Bay12 back in 2015! How time freakin' flies. I totally aped these from Something Awful, and they just took off after that, moving on to reddit with a number of different hosts. It really was an awesome time.

^ Although I disappeared in the middle of the last one for reasons that I can not even begin to remember. A giant sorry to everyone from those days.
A repository of links to each of the games would be great.
First of all, it seems that the images on the Reclaiming Battlefailed thread are missing. Does anyone have an intact version?
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=176177.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=176177.0)
There's links to the backed up docs in this thread (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175415.0)
This is something I wanted to ask Immortal anyway, do you think it would be wise to include a backup link whereever applicable. I know bearskie archived many community fort classics.
Second of all, I would like to nominate Thob Goes to the Surface
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=176177.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=176177.0)
A dwarven miner's search for drink across a desolated world.
+1 for Thob Goes to the surface.
+1 from me too.
An additional +1.
+1 to the Museum, I assumed it was already in.
Epic Fortresses
These are triumphs of architecture and city planning, even by Dwarven Standards. Look on our works, ye mighty, and despair.

Roomcarnage (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139393.0)
Archcrystal (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=156319.0) - It's a fortress that has been active for 310 in-game years. And it is currently building a glass city in the HFS. Its military of only 2 dozen or so have faithfully guarded its gates both in the HFS and the surface for these past 3 centuries.
I would like to nominate the Museum III.Museum III is nominated.

Over a century of epic tales, undead outbreaks, demonic invasions, and world changing bugs.
It has gotten quite incredible! +1 from me!
+1 for the Museum - honestly surprised it's not already on here.
+1 from me as well. It's the largest succession game I've seen in a long time, and certainly one of the longest-running in recent years, both in terms of ingame time (over 100 years) and irl time (coming up on two years in March).
+1 from me, stopped me lurking and got me to participate
+1 to the Museum III from me; it got me into adventure mode as a whole, and it's impressive how long it's lasted both in-game and out.
+1 to the Museum, I assumed it was already in.
+1 for the Museum, the only adventure mode I've ever played. Orid Xem is an amazing world to explore, expand and change and the players just make it better.
+1 for Museum III!
+1 for the Museum
+1 for the tournaments, brought me back to df and moddingThe collective gladiator tournaments reaches 9/10.
+1 for Thob Goes to the surfaceThob now at 5/10.
Regarding Archcrystal, the 500 year save (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=15251) is up (started in year 71 and it's year 571 in-game), the OP calls it "the final save" and the thread hasn't been posted on by the OP since before February. I'm pretty sure it counts as "complete", so the blurb in this thread needs to be modified.Updated, thank you!
Setting a new record for speed voting The Museum III (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175875.0) joins our ranks as a Legendary Succession Game, and a rare Adventure Mode one at that. Given the size of the thread, I strongly encourage participants to make a backup. Even just saving the whole webpage as an html doc for later conversion is a good start.
Updated, thank you!And thank you for taking notice and updating.
I hope everyone has a great year this time around :)Thank you, likewise!
The collective gladiator tournaments reaches 9/10.I'll give the gladiator tournaments a +1 as well.
I'll give the gladiator tournaments a +1 as well.
With a final boost, the DF Gladiator Tournaments is now a legendary... hmm. I actually have no idea. I guess Forum Game for now. Since the event is now hosted through Reddit, I'll check there for the owner. Anyways, grats to all the organizers past and present. If anything in DF can be considered a proper yearly tradition, this is it.
I just like to point out that the Eternall Halls is listed under finished/abandoned, but it appears to have risen from death, (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=21427.msg8344707#msg8344707) and is being played actively.
It is certainly living up to it's 2008 promise that the game would never end. :D

Smallhands is not quite as active as it once was, but still not officially finished/abandoned yet.The tiny Fortress also put back to Active.

Sorry guys, I know it sucks when something gets close near the end. But you can always nominate again, though I don't know how active this forum is right now.
As a Christmas gesture I'd like to nominate Thob again! I'm about to reread it

+1 from me again.
One of my favorites, and a good reminder for me to reread it also, Maloy!

+1 for Thob
+1 let's get Thob on the listHappy Winter my fellow Dorfs :) I hope you all brewed sufficient booze before the deep freeze. Thob takes another crack at the title. Given the short time since its' last nomination ended (less than a week) and relative rush at the end (5 votes in a week), I am going to exercise my executive authority here, and I encourage everyone to speak up if you think this is fair. Maloy's nomination puts this story on the roster, but will not count towards the vote total. Since I have stopped allowing nominees to sit here for years on end, this is the first time a re-submission has been given this fast, so there is no precedent to speak of. If we find ourselves here in a year with 9 votes, then I will reconsider.
+1 let's get Thob on the list+1
That’s 10 votes for Thob, isn’t it?From my count we have 11, that feels like it happened in record time.
I think some people just forgot to vote last time.

Once again' +1 for Thob!
+1 for thob, even though I am somewhat of a recent convert and only just read the story.
So apparently Imgur's about to remove a bunch of stuff... (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175875.msg8470228#msg8470228) anything in the HoL that's stored on there is at risk.Crap on a stick. I'll do what I can up to May 15, but I'm putting out a general call to arms here; pictures stored on Imgur need to both be saved and paired to the relevant post of a given entry. Just saving the picture without reference is effectively useless. If you have the hdd space, one option is to save the webpage as a full html download with local pictures (no links). Spread the word! Edit; https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/12tcjfc/the_official_hall_of_legends_needs_your_help/
Just noticed this, saved pages for Ravens are murder. Hopefully i did it right.A full html save of each page is just fine. I realize some stories already have stuff on DFFD as you mention, I've been going through everything this weekend to update and coordinate efforts. For example, stuff like Under Grotto or Bravemule were captured by The Wayback Machine and should be downloaded from there instead of Bay12.

Although, going by the reddit, a lot of stuff has already been saved? That's all messy.

Will do Breadbowl now.
Did, and then realized that there was no need for that. Full PDF for it is right in the first posts of this thread. Oh drat. :(

Archcrystal seems to have a PDF as well.

I shall do Drunken fortress, it has already lost quite alot of its images to time. So it would be a drunken shame to lose more.I have tasked myself with restoring dead links. Lemme know which pages are missing when you're done.

I can get cracking on the three Museum threads tonight via the html download with images method.Sweet! I will not be able to acknowledge every response, but I will update our tracker as often as I can. Museum III has been moved to 'pending'.
Sweet! I will not be able to acknowledge every response, but I will update our tracker as often as I can. Museum III has been moved to 'pending'.All Museum threads (The Museum, Museum II, and Museum III) have been backed up via the .html (complete) saving method, with 50 posts to a page. For the time being I've compressed each folder into a .rar archive and uploaded each one to the DFFD; if anyone wants to take a stab at making them more readable (e.x.: turning the pages into one PDF) they're welcome to it.

Museum I, 49 pages, 209 MB: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16584
Museum II, 12 pages, 44 MB: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16585
Museum III, 63 pages (current length), 300 MB: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16587
That said, a few of Museum I's images are broken (e.x.:page 37, Argonnek, lost due to Tinypic. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=104399.1800)); not sure how many, or if Museum II is the same. I can try and locate the exact posts later, if that would help.
In the meantime, if there are no objections, I'll start archiving the following Legends through the same html saving method:
- Vaults? (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=162870.0) (Complete, upload pending)
- Nomekast - At War With Nothing (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=53107.0) (Complete, upload pending)
- Deathgate - And We Must Scream (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=84451.0) (Complete, upload pending)
- Murdermachines - Return of the Voidgod (Deathgate II) (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=121407.0)
I made a code skeleton for generating HTML pages from Imgur albums (https://github.com/voliol/Imgur-album-to-HTML), some while back. 90% sure it won't be useful in the least because there should be better tools out there (and it doesn't download the images, only the album info/descriptions), but here it is none the less for those remaining 10%.
A Dwarf has created a tool that should (haven't tested myself yet) capture an entire thread in one go.
You take file called url_list.txt
You put each thread you want to download in the file and save it then run the script. It will backup everything there. URL conversions is a list to convert the web urls to local file locations (I didn't implement changing them on the fly, we can do that after everything is backed up)
If anyone wants to give this a try on the larger threads, let us know; https://www.dropbox.com/s/belwmr34crezlru/topic.zip?dl=0
I've been wondering about Roomcarnage. The story is on imgur and for some reason it won't work every time I try to download a page. It may have to be done manually. The old thread ends a few months back with the creator talking about archiving it.
Severedcoils has already been uploaded to the DFFD.Crap, and it wasn't even that long ago that it was uploaded.
Hey folks. Thank you all for your continued diligence. I will be updating our checklist tomorrow, including the restoration of dead images. As tends to happen, I had a lot thrown at me very suddenly, but I will definitely have more time this week to help finish our project.

Something i have wanted to do is try and recover what has been lost. If you need any help on recovery let me know. :)
Migrursut: Utopia in the Wastes - many of the images have poor quality and now a Photobucket watermark, but it's better than nothing. It's a big thread, but should be done soon.Might want to check this one over when it's done, I've had trouble with pictures from Photobucket not saving.
The Littlest Cheesemaker is safe here. (https://tlcm.pro/)Having backups along with the site probably isn't that bad a thing.
Likewise, Losing is Fun is safe here. (https://losingisfun.org/)

Might be worth organizing something where a few of us come around once a year to back up whatever's been done in the last year.I'd be willing to help with that.
I'd be willing to help with that.
Also should we keep going until we've made backups of all the legends even if the pictures are gone, and backups of the ones not hosted on the forum?
Edit2: props for knocking out TLC.No problem.
I have moved all of my pictures to the relative safety of Imgur.
The Archive
The following is a collection of archives for various prominent threads in CG&S, many of which have lost their images due to old age. Effort has been undertaken in the post below to preserve these threads in the form of forum captures, whilst also collating other sources of compilations found elsewhere on Bay12. If an old legend you wish to read is missing its original images, perhaps take a look here. We might have something for you down in the archives.

Threads for the thread god!
Edit::-[I have moved all of my pictures to the relative safety of Imgur.
Also I seem to have given myself a massive headache from doing this, so I will probably take a few days off after I finish The Warrens of Oric the Awesome.
And here's all the Spookyforts
The headache is still here but I shall persevere until the I'm finished! Also I seem to have given myself a massive headache from doing this, so I will probably take a few days off after I finish The Warrens of Oric the Awesome.Take it easy, boss. Hopefully we don't need to do this sort of thing again for a while.
+1 for WaterluresI shall +1 Waterlures as well.
Got to preserve the story of the Capy's
I need to personally thank you for archiving my dumb thread. MK means a lot to me and represent a large number of hours spent on that world and I'm very glad to see it saved safely somewhereYou're very welcome things like that need to be saved.

Can't access this myself, but that's a great find - are you up to backing it up?
I'd like to add a +1 for Waterlures. It's excellent, and unique, and deserves to be in the Hall.+1
