Spoiler: What the f- (click to show/hide)

Be not afraid, child. My name is Desmond. I, as you, am a faithful servant of Belenus.

We meet now because you have died on your world. In life, you were tender to the Nwyfre in all its incarnations, and you shall be rewarded. Please, tell me...

What is your name? You look like a "Daniel," or perhaps "Elsbeth."
What is your gender? My eyes are going by the day. Life continues as ever in this world, as in the last.
How would you like to appear in this world? You are free from such constraints, now, as Earth's "genetics" placed upon you.

General Discussion / Weird History Picture Thread
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:30:57 pm »
Most history education focuses on martial and political affairs: the exploits of kings, clashes between nations, civil unrest and uprisings. History also has a weird and wonderful side that is rarely mentioned except in folk tales: odd regional customs, funny but useful inventions, and bizarre domestic circumstances. You won't get any kind of worthwhile education from this thread, but if you have or find weird photos or illustrations about the past, this is the place for them.

I don't mind discussion on these pictures as the thread is likely to fall into a lull. Necro it if you have new material.

Pictures of your own family or region's weird history are especially appreciated!

To start, here are two of my favorite examples.

aw ye its time for some vidja

I've been developing two video games for some time. Both of them are made in RPG Maker XP with different scriptsets, and both are video game spinoffs of forum games. Neither are released yet (except for a buggy demo that you don't want to play), but I expect to have something playable for both in the coming months. Progress of the games will be tracked here without cluttering up the forum game threads.

TWoOtABorn

TWoOtABorn is the official spinoff game of my long-running suggestion game, The Warrens of Oric the Awesome (see sig). It's based off the Pokemon Essentials scriptset for RMXP (though it will be modified to remove all references to the Pokemon universe). In this game, you play as Al, a womanizing vampire whose "Soul Star," the Illborn Exchange, lets him capture and command "Illborn," the monsters in the Warrens. The first release will contain all of Dungeon Level 2 and a limited implementation of the Underside. There will be several Illborn to catch, as well as a few hidden ones, and plenty more to fight. As this game takes place several cycles before the forum game, we will not be encountering Proxxy, Riltia, or any other cycle-dependent characters. This will keep the story and characters fresh.

Spoiler: WIP Screenshots (click to show/hide)

Progress: 11/18 DL2 rooms complete. Limited Underside complete. 19/150+ Illborn complete.

Fire Emblem on Forums 2 XP

Latest demo in this post!

FEF2XP is based on the FEXP scriptset that was long since abandoned. I've taken to adding some content to the scriptset while making a game based on Haspen's FEF2. There are two games in one here as, in addition to the FEF2 story, there's a much harder non-canon story acting as an unofficial direct sequel to Haspen's FEF1.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the engine, there are no battle animations, and all battles take place on the map, making the video game much more like the forum game.

FEF2XP is less likely to be of interest to the forum overall, considering TWoOtA's much, much larger readership.

Spoiler: WIP Screenshots (click to show/hide)

Progress: Chapters 0, 1, 2, Intermission 1, 1A, and 2A are complete. They have missing some content, and there are plenty of bugs, but there they are. The next update will include chapters 2x, 2xx, and 3A.

Feel free to ask questions, report bugs (when the demos are released), etc.

My grandfather, before he died in 2000, interviewed most of his extended family about their lives and wrote down all the interviews in his journals. Most of his family died before him. His only remaining family are my mother, grandmother, and his brother. I've asked all of them if they know what happened to his journals, but none do. They were extensive and would not have been easily lost or "misplaced." My question is, how would you go about tracking something like this down? I don't even know where to start. Are there any institutions that keep records of property that dead people owned in their lifetimes (and would willing to part with this)? Maybe they're sitting under a bed in an old house somewhere. Or am I stuck asking my way up the extended family tree and hoping someone knows about this?

There seems to be a general trend away from these sorts of things -- notice how the greatcoat and trenchcoat, similarly long, flowing clothes -- became less popular in recent years. I adore the style and wear long, flowing coats with defined tails whenever possible (especially in winter) and am thinking of putting together a full cloak out of old, unfitting clothes. They've become the subject of ren faires, SCA, and general cosplay, but in reality, they're much more functional than your average Legend of Zelda cosplay outfit. Has the function and style of the winter coat succeeded the original winter cloak, in your opinion? Don't like the stares you get? Don't like looking like a Game of Thrones groupie? DISCUSS.

Other Games / Twisted Tower
« on: November 04, 2014, 10:34:41 am »

Twisted Tower is a castlevania-like game where you play as an Animu Catgirl in Animu Catperson World. There's this big tower and it's causing problems or something. So you gotta enter the tower and fight your way through X amount of randomly generated levels. There's a big diablo-esque skill grid, and you can get randomly generated weapons and armor, but it's a lot more reliable to just build up your own set of armor through crafting. You should play the first five floors then come back and post in the thread.

The game has almost no publicity yet. I stumbled on it by pure accident a couple years ago, and it seemed like it was vaporware (long periods between updates). However, late last year, the author released a demo that was everything I hoped it would be.

Cool things
-The game feels a lot like Castlevania. It's not as fast-paced as Aria of Sorrow or Order of Ecclesia, but I get that sense during combat. The main difference is how much knockback damage everything does. You can hardly kill a skeleton without getting it up against a wall.
-I like how you can't just heal willy-nilly. You either have to return to town and pay a rare orb at the statue or slowly heal with an expensive spell and mana that doesn't regenerate. If you suck at the game then you'll be at 0MP most of the time, just waiting on that next MP potion so you can cast heal two more times.
-Unlike a lot of games like this with a physical weapons/magic spells split, Twisted Tower gives you a wide variety of wands to cast really basic spells at no cost. You can't move while casting, but you can aim up and down like a 2D Worms game.
-The magic key system is cool. Basically, if you see a key, you have to grab it before it disappears, and then you have to run to the floor's magic door to unlock it before the time limit is up. If you do all this, you get a bunch of great loot.
-The level generation is quite nice, and the level art is beautiful. Occasionally there will be a platform you can't quite reach, but one of the talents you can purchase increases your jump height.

Not-so-cool things
-There's not a lot of variety right now. Aside from the magic key minigame, every floor is the same combination of enemies, breakables, and chests. There might be bosses later on, but I haven't got there so far. The dungeon theme changes every ten levels, bringing in new enemies. Every five levels, you talk to someone who fills in a little plot, and you get a chance to rest and teleport to town.
-No save points in the tower proper. This means you have to play five straight floors at a time. Since I mainly use wands, this takes a long time.

I hope development continues, and we get another build soon, but it'll probably be 2017 before the beta is released :P

Life Advice / where to get arrowheads
« on: September 21, 2014, 10:47:12 am »
I have this piece of shit bow and arrow

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

but while I was shooting it the arrow get stuck in a big tree. It fell down after a storm but the arrowhead didn't come down with it. There is no way to climb that tree and anyway I'm allergic to the leaves. Can you just buy arrowheads in a store or is it more efficient/cost effective to smash pointed bits of rock?

I walked up to town to a store called AUTHENTIC SURVIVOR GEAR that said "archery supplies and repair" on the door, but they didn't actually have any arrowheads, just a lot of guns and compound bows. One guy tried to sell me a walking stick that had a fake arrowhead embedded in it. I didn't buy it but it did look pretty cool.

--DREAM MISSION: CASTLE IN THE SKY--

Eight LEGENDARY WARRIORS finish their climb up the Thousand-Stair-Staircase, huffing and puffing. On an anonymous tip from some Dream Mission Agency, they discovered the location of the Castle in the Sky, owned by the Zombie King Vernon and his evil Queen, Valerie. Just ahead, across a sky bridge, they see some ghastly monsters.

: "...Valeriiiiiie, it hurts me so...!"

: "Worry not, my love! Once we take over the WORLD OF MORTAL DREAMS, we'll have powers beyond comprehension! I'll return you to life, and we'll haunt the nightmares of children across the multiverse. AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!"

Candy backs up, runs toward Efa, lifts off into the air, and performs a Jump-Dive-Concussion, smashing his skull against hers. He promptly falls to the ground, unconscious (and hopefully the same for her).

Wop wop wop wop...

Candy and Efa wake up on the platform next to the Eight Legendary Heroes. Said heroes look oddly familiar. Candy rubs his eyes.

: "Aww man! I'm still grey even in my dreams. Bummer."

He turns to Efa who is also waking up.

: "Hey, Efa! Quick, say something ONLY you would think to say so I can make sure we're having the same dream!"

« on: February 27, 2014, 11:20:46 pm »

it is the first day of high school! you will celebrate with a self insert dating sim, written, illustrated, and voice acted by you. how nice!

however this is a new school and you do not know anyone here. having just finished your final introductory class today, you are free to participate in after school activities. maybe you will meet some new people! you are sure nothing can go wrong in any way whatsoever.

but first describe yourself a little.

what is your hobby? you bet it's stupid.
what is your secret power? keep it reasonable.
what is your favorite annimay? this will provide you plenty of conversation for the semester, you are sure of it.
