Bay12 NetBattlers

The sun had slipped just below the horizon when Thomas dropped everyone off at the foothills of Mount Cyllene, promising to return in a couple of hours or after being called. A rock slide had recently tumbled down the mountain and Titania wanted to investigate in case it had uncovered a hidden tomb or shrine. With the Kytheran Rangers constantly patrolling the group had to move by the light of the moon and stars but the darkness also offered them protection whenever the whine of electric bikes grew louder. The crags of Mount Cyllene had plenty of places to hide and wait for the Rangers to pass before the group continued their trek. If it wasn't for the danger of being caught it would have been a lovely hike. It was a pleasantly cool spring evening and the city of Kythera glittered in the darkness below them, offering a wonderful view of the city and sea for those who wanted to look back and admire it.

After over an hour of trudging in silence, the group finally reached the rockslide. Titania glanced around and carefully listened for the whine of electric engines before pulling out a flashlight to better see by. An assortment of brown and dark boulders lay at the bottom of a valley, and even in the meagre light of Titania's flashlight the path that they took down the mountain was obvious from the gouges torn out of the rock. "Be careful everyone," she whispered, "You don't want to slip and break something. Let's start near the top of the rock pile and work our way up. Let me know if you manage to find anything. I'll keep an eye out for the rangers. They might swing around on patrol."

Even with Titania's expectation she did not think that the group would find something in less than ten minutes in the valley. A small hole a few meters above the valley floor was discovered to lead to a chamber dug into the side of the mountain. Whoever had made it must have disguised their work well for it to remain undiscovered for so long, but the rockslide had shorn off a corner of the chamber and so exposed it. Sticking a flashlight through would light up its interior, revealing an Antikytheran tomb. Murals covered the walls, depicting the usual subjects. Friends and family morning over those who had passed. Semele standing watch over her departed worshippers. Menippe and Metioche welcoming the dead to their realm. Even those who hadn't brushed up on Antikytheran artwork would probably recognize the subjects from experience, even if they didn't know exactly who they were. On the furthest wall were several small alcoves for the ashes of the dead, but most of them were empty. One alcove near the top had an urn in it, while the topmost alcove was unusually covered by a bronze gate. Its bars were thick and its hinges very heavy and an Antikytheran electronic lock was firmly attached, though obviously lacking power after the passage of centuries.

As with every Antikytheran tomb, a server cube sat in the middle of the chamber, covered in dust and similarly lacking power. It was made out of brown, Cyllenan stone and strips of cloudy, ancient glass and was waist high. The prongs sticking out of its top were ports for ancient PETs and it had connections at its base for power. Typically the server cube would hold information about those interned in the tomb, but it was entirely possible that it controlled the electronic lock as well. Titania had brought a battery and the adapters needed to power the cube and access it with modern devices, assuming she could get to it.

The hole that the rockslide had made wasn't very large, just barely enough for someone to squeeze through. "Did anyone bring a shovel or something else we could use to dig?" Titania asks, surveying the tomb. "I think that the bottom is mostly rubble but moving it by hand is going to be a pain. Or maybe someone can squeeze through it? It might be a little dangerous, but I do have extension cords. We just need one person inside to attach the cords and look for artifacts."

Multiverse Mecha Mayhem
OOC Thread

The Ziva's Revenge is a modern ship in many universes and extraordinarily advanced in most others. As such the massive vessel is almost entirely operated and controlled by its on-board AI and many independent robotic systems, meaning that the entire biological crew can fit into the conference room to talk with the new mech pilots for Hakim's expedition. For a trillion-credit ship the room is surprisingly muted and simple, with tables and chairs made out of metal and hardwood and soft lighting illuminating everything. It wouldn't look out of place in an office with more money than ambition, which is surprising since it belongs to such a notorious space pirate. It doesn't even have any trophies decorating the walls, only a few tasteful paintings scattered about.

The biological crew of the Ziva's Revenge are seated on one side of the table, with Hakim at the head and the rest sorted by rank. The two exceptions are Aaron, who is busy setting out snacks and drinks for everyone, and George, who is trying to hide from all of the scary new people in Hakim's lap. Behind them floats the ship's holographic avatar busily typing away on a tablet, to it plain that she's listening in while still working on resupplying the ship. Aurora Aybek Shipyards is top of the line in this universe and the ship has numerous loading machines but resupply is still expected to take an hour before the Ziva's Revenge can set off. More than enough time to talk with the mech pilots and discuss the task at hand.

"Thank you for coming, all of you. I must admit that I expected more pilots to heed my call but no matter. You four should be more than sufficient and it does mean that the rewards shall be even higher."

"Another mech or two would have boosted our chances of success by several percent though."

"Yes, but when do I care about the odds?"

"Never, but if you did then maybe you wouldn't keep losing at poker."

Hakim shoots a nearby camera a glare with his good eye, but before the two can argue Iesha interjects.

"It's nice to meet you all. I am Chief Engineer Iesha Kama and I will be looking after your machines for the duration of this voyage. Ziva is equipped with top of the line maintenance facilities but servicing machines from so many different places is sure to be challenging, so if you can provide any assistance I would be very appreciative. I am... uncertain on how to handle Ln'Eta's equipment in particular."

"I suppose that introductions are in order. I am Captain Hakim Whydah, if that was not yet apparent, and you have already met Iesha and Ziva. The gentleman to her right is Guiomar Shehu, the Chief Medical Officer aboard this ship."

"I trust that this will be a safe and routine voyage but if you have any medical concerns or complaints I will gladly assist," Guiomar says with a companionable nod of his head, before returning to his crossword puzzle.

"And I am Aaron Torosian. Professional Chef. Do let me know if you have any dietary issues. The Ziva's Revenge has an extensive kitchen and it would be no hassle to accommodate them. And please, enjoy the refreshments."

After a brief silence the woman at the end of the table lets out a startled noise and quickly introduces herself.

"You can call me Berhane-AA. I have already entered your profiles into the ship's security database and quadruple-checked that everything is correct. I want to avoid any... Oooh... Any accidents."

"Berhane-AA is in charge of security aboard the ship, along with Ziva. Hopefully her services will be not be needed but trust me when I say that appearances are deceiving. She is ready to defend the ship with her life if need be and is more than capable of extracting a high cost."

"Oooh..."

"Now with introductions out of the way, I suppose that you all can introduce yourselves as well, if you wish. If we are to work together there is no need to be shy. Otherwise, we can begin with the briefing. Assaulting the End of the Multiverse and retrieving my debt from Lord Z will be an extensive and difficult task. Naturally I would not divulge my plans where their spies might be listening, so I have waited until now to inform you of them. It is straightforward but will rely on a quick and devastating strike, which is why I need your assistance."

"Maybe we need to talk about the End of the Multiverse first? How much do you all know about the place and the people who live there? None of you are from universes close to the End of the Multiverse, so I would be surprised if you have ever encountered an Endian before, but maybe you've got some information second hand?"

Multiverse Mecha Mayhem
IC Thread

Across the multiverse, in every shady bar, grimy mechanic shop, and dingy barracks comes a message. Sometimes it appears unbidden in newsfeeds, sometimes it is plastered on posters, and sometimes it is laboriously handwritten with plenty of spelling mistakes. Regardless, the message is the same, or similar enough not to matter.

I, Captain Hakim, scourge of Khalzak, rescuer of Queen Raisha, slayer of the fearsome Beast of Delta-Io, am seeking a crew for the latest of my adventures. The Lord of the End of the Multiverse owes me and I never leave a debt unpaid, no matter how large nor how small. Assistance is needed to storm the End of the Multiverse and get Lord Z to pay its debt by guile or by force, for this is a job too big for me and Ziva's Revenge alone. It will involve dashing across multiple universes, retrieving the Dark Key from its hiding place, and crossing the Gate of Infinite Blackness to strike directly at Lord Z itself. Such a task requires the bravest and more daring of pilots and so they will be rewarded handsomely from my own coffers for it.

Applicants must bring their own mecha, or local equivalent, be capable of breathing an atmosphere of 80% Nitrogen and 20% Oxygen, plus trace gases, and agree to several rounds of inoculations. Multiversal transport will be provided to and from the destination, along with room and board during the entire duration of the voyage. Payment will be delivered as soon as Ziva's Revenge returns from the End of the Multiverse, for good or for ill.

Serious Applicants Only!!!

Such a message is bound to attract the attention of those in the know, for the Ziva's Revenge is a magnificent ship and Hakim a formidable pirate, though not as fearsome as his father. If he requires outside help then he must surely be sailing into certain danger and a great reward. Thus if he manages to succeed in his task then he is certain to reward those who help him generously, for it is well know that the pirate is free with his money and cares more about adventure than material reward. And what an adventure it would be, to reach the End of the Multiverse and battle with its infamous Lord!

Multiverse Mecha Mayhem is a lighthearted and quick game about taking various types and styles of mechs and mashing them up in big battles. Hence the game is centred around a space pirate and a heist across the multiverse, so that instead of worrying about lore everyone can make whatever characters and designs they enjoy and participate in the game. While Multiverse Mecha Mayhem is mostly focused on mech combat there will be on-foot sections and some roleplaying elements as well, so it's best to make a character which can cooperate with others and isn't completely useless when they're out of a giant robot.

The player limit is going to be rather modest, somewhere between 4 and 8 players depending on interest, and players will be selected after a week or two.

Honourable Karoshi
IC Thread goes here.

The year is 2961. Prime Minister Saito Hideyoshi is the official head of Japan’s government, yet all know that true power lies in the hands of President Katsuo and the Oshiro Conglomerate. Under his rule Japan grows ever prosperous, isolated from the world behind its Five-Fold Wall. On new year’s day the CEOs of the nine prime corporations travel to Osaka to pay homage to President Katsuo, only to feud among themselves for the rest of the year. Shohen-enhanced salarymen, warriors and intellectuals without peer, swagger through streets and boardrooms seeking to serve their corporate masters and enhance their own prestige. Their bloody pursuit of wealth and glory is sanctioned by the Seventy Profitable Laws and the greed and desires of the CEOs. Under the salarymen groan the backs of millions of workers, toiling away to make such gross wealth and prosperity possible. In a land where two salarymen might duel over the right of way on a street, only the importance of the bottom line is enough to grab their attention. For while the risks might be fearful, tireless pursuit of profits and loyalty unto death showers a successful salaryman with wealth and power beyond his wildest of dreams.

Honourable Karoshi is set in a combination of cyberpunk Japan and the Edo period. The Shogunate has been replaced with the Conglomerate and samurai with nanobot enhanced salarymen. The players will be one of those nanobot enhanced salarymen, serving their corporate masters and their own sense of honour. Needless to say this game will be more goofy than grimdark. As salarymen, the players will manage firms, earn profits, participate in feuds, perform karaoke and other actions worthy of their prestigious position. The game mechanics are relatively simple and the plot open-ended. The focus will be on roleplaying, character interactions and day-to-day decisions.

The player limit depends on how much interest I get in the game. I'll accept at most 8 to start, with the option of including more further on in the game. Characters are not first come, first served but will be picked based on how well they fit into cyberpunk Edo Japan.

The Order of the White Branch
OOC Thread

By tradition the royalty of Galwalas are crowned in Saint Benezet's Cathedral by the Archbishop himself. But with Wrikon still lost to the primordial mists the coronation of Queen Eirwen is forced to be a more functional affair. Those of worth, and many who are not, crowd Castle Camlann's main hall to watch the momentous occasion where but a few days before they were desperately pressing their enemies. The royal jewels, taken from the castle's vault, shine in splendour as Confessor Ekkehard grants them to Eirwen one by one. First the ancient crown of Galwalas, said to contain a finger bone of Saint John, then the royal sceptre and orb, symbols of her god-given authority on earth as Queen. Clad in plate mail and chain, Eirwen looks like one of the many warrior Queens from myth and legend. Those who know the Queen admit that if she had the time to assemble a proper coronation regalia, she would call on armourers instead of dressmakers. But the sight of such a confident and powerful Queen, ready to take on all challenges or foes, does much to soothe everyone's minds and concerns over the turmoil embroiling the Kingdom.

"Men of Galwalas!" Eirwen shouts, her voice dropping to a more understandable volume as the scattered conversations of her subjects die down. "I, Queen Eirwen, do swear before God to follow in the example of my departed father King Illtyd the Wise! I will set right the wrongs which the Tyrant Iorwerth caused, bring peace and prosperity to the land, and rule with justice and honour! As my first act as Queen, I will pardon those who were only fulfilling ancient obligations of vassalage. Those who merely took his coin will be allowed to leave with full colours, so long as they do so peacefully and quickly. But those who have assisted the Tyrant of their own free will be punished for their misdeeds and their heads will join their master's on Camlann's gate."

"As my second act as Queen, I hereby announce the creation of the Order of the White Branch. I am but one woman and the misdeeds of the Tyrant dig deep into Galwalas's very soil! Even now the primordial fog of creation laps against Castle Camlann's walls, the result of the final and most despicable act of the Tyrant. The Order of the White Branch will be dedicated to fix this most terrible deed, to restore the land to the glory from which it fell, and maintain it forever more. As such I beseech the brave and loyal people of Galwalas to step forward and dedicate themselves the Order, whether they be man or woman or of high or lowly birth. The Order will accept all who are worthy, united by our love of the Kingdom and desire to see it prosper."

"Aye! I will gladly be the first to join the Order!" declares Baron Rheinallt, close companion of the Queen. He steps forward from the crowd and kneels to receive her blessing, his stylish cape obscuring the deformity of his left arm. As he rises he declares, "All true men of Galwalas should consider it an honour to be part of the Order. One would be hard pressed to find a nobler or more worthy goal in these dark and trying times." With the example set, more present themselves to join the Order, including Confessor Ekkehard and even Conrad von Ullmann. The only member of Eirwen's inner circle who does not receive the honours is Lady Jeanne de Lorraine, watching the proceedings from the hall's gallery with a pleased smile on her face.

If your character has not been accepted and isn't in the Dramatis Personae for the game, then you shouldn't be posting in this thread. Otherwise you are free to present yourself to the Queen, join the Order, and begin preparations to explore the formless void.

The Order of the White Branch
IC Thread

The Order of the White Branch is a Arthurian, high fantasy forum game, based around a group of like-minded paladins, enchanters and commoners riding out to right wrongs, fight monsters, rescue damsels and wrestle personifications of nature into submission. At the same time these brave knights will literally remake the Kingdom of Galwalas from the ground up, making decisions that will shape its future and its inhabitants, for good or for ill. Gameplay and combat is designed to be quick and fast-paced instead of getting bogged down on tedious number crunching that usually afflicts such games. The focus is more on roleplaying, decisions made throughout the course of many adventures, and the friendships and rivalries which you make along the way.

While the player limit is quite high, characters will be accepted based on how well they fit into an Arthurian backdrop. This is a game about noble men and women adventuring for the good of the realm and righting what wrongs they encounter, not angsting over their traumatic backstories or brooding in the shadows.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / RotMG: Ghost Hunters (IC Thread) First Hunt
« on: December 05, 2016, 12:58:01 pm »
April 13th, 2013:

It's a cold spring day in the city of Niagara Falls, with temperature hovering five degrees above freezing. A light drizzle accompanies the chilly weather, giving one last taste of winter to those out in the streets. With the tourist season beginning soon those involved are worried that the recent troubles will drive away tourists from visiting the world-famous falls and the city's less famous attractions. But for most people life tries to go on as usual. Now that magic has returned, accompanied by a rise in crime, vigilantism and other social ills, many are certain about their future and their places in it. Except for those interested in magic and the wonders it can do, especially the people who answered a suspicious advertisement in the local newspapers and are now arriving at the orientation session.

The session takes place in the conference room of the Victoria Avenue Public Library. Whoever planned this session was too optimistic about the number of people who'll show up fo trhe smattering of interested people just barely breaks into double digits, while enough seating has been set out for at least one hundred. At least this means that there's enough snacks and refreshments to go around, as promised in the advertisement. A table sits in the back of the room,  loaded with Timmies, doughnuts, timbits, coffee, tea and the like, as well as fruit and vegetable slices for those who don't want such unhealthy junkfood. At the front of the room the presenter fiddles with a projector. "I'm just having a few technical difficulties here," he confesses with a good-natured smile, "It'll be a few moments. Why don't you grab something to eat and drink while you're waiting?" The presenter doesn't look very impressive or professional in his plaid shirt and beige pants. With his balding hair, kind blue eyes and developing pot belly, he looks like the least likely person to be involved with the supernatural. He seems more like a grade-school teacher who winces whenever someone says a swear harder than 'damn'.

Despite this obvious problem the session still has the chance to be quite interesting and instructive. At the front of the room sits a table covered with bottles, wands and other items of obvious magical functionality. Yet the odd character sitting sitting patiently in a back corner of the room offers the greatest argument for staying. One half of him is stark white while the other is a all-consuming black, the division in skin-tone mirrored by the fancy suit he's wearing. His unusual appearance is explained when suddenly the two halves separate from each other, walking about as if nothing unusual has occurred. One half of this creature retrieves a doughnut from the snack table while the other confers quietly with the presenter for a few moments, presumably asking about when he's going to start, before both halves return to their seat and casually rejoin. One does not have to be sensitive to magic to realize that this is no ordinary human being, but perhaps a demon or some other supernatural creature.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / RotMG: Ghost Hunters (OOC Thread)
« on: November 21, 2016, 02:06:28 pm »
Rise of the Magic Girls is a forum game with a long and varied history, spread across three different threads and several abortive spin-offs. It started out as a fight against unstoppable alien hordes, twisted into a goofy slice-of-life RP, and slowly grew darkier and darkier before it finally collapsed on itself. It featured powerful gods, amazing heroes and beings beyond the comprehension of man.

Ghost Hunters will feature none of that.

Set in the far off past of 2013, RotMG:Ghost Hunters takes place in a lighter, happier time. Obama has been reelected for a second term, the world economy is still recovering from the subprime mortgage crisis, and humanity has fended off an alien invasion with the return of magic to the world. With a kind of strange normality life continues, as people struggle to adapt and adjust to the new reality which they find themselves in. Magic is quickly regulated for the good of society and the safety of citizens against folks who cannot control or properly use their newfound powers. The city of Niagara Falls, Canada is not exactly a hotspot for magic by any stretch of the imagination. Home of the world-famous Niagara Falls, half of the city is a tourist trap while the other half has seen better days. Quietly, several ads are released into the local newspapers. At first glance it looks like one of those make money quick schemes, offering a ton of cash in return for a few hours of work each week. A closer work reveals some oddities. 'Paranormal Activity', 'Supernatural Experiences', 'Not for the faint of heart', and so forth. The kind of thing to catch the interest of the magically minded, or those caught in one of the many suburbs and dreaming of a better feature. At the very least the orientation session offers snacks and refreshments in return to listening to the pitch, so going to it wouldn't be an entire waste of time...

Ghost Hunters will involve more ordinary people compared to the heroes and robots in previous games. As such the power level of the players will be much reduced compared to the other threads. Being able to conjure a flame is something spectacular and humanoid monsters are more unusual and exotic than powerful.

The Free City of Alife is well-known for being the centre of rumours and gossip, its inhabitants ready to latch on any juicy scrap of information that comes their way, no matter how false it may be. Thus whispers that Prince Jan of the Kingdom of Aen, long thought to have died three decades before from a fatal illness in his youth, is not only alive but preparing to reclaim his throne are thus easily dismissed by those outside the city. Yet apparently some take these rumours seriously, for how else can one explain the various orders have been placed to the city's merchants and craftsmen? Demands for weapons and gold? Favours called in and equipment procured? At the same time these suspicious orders have been placed, a call has been raised for mercenaries and soldiers to assemble at the house of Merchant Ovidio and act as the vanguard of the Prince's future armies. The daunting task set out before them, to conquer the crown of Aen for a man who has not seen the country for almost four decades, would be more than enough to dissuade the bravest of soldiers. But surely some would be idealistic and honourable enough, or equally desperate and foolhardy, to accept such a call for arms.

The game will start with at most 8 players, all of them bodyguards to the so-called Prince Jan of Aen as he journeys to recover his rightful throne. As per tradition, players will be starting as trainees and levelling up to First Class. Applications will be accepted on Friday at the earliest. The game is not first come first served, but players will be selected based on the quality and appropriateness of their sheets when the game starts.

It's nice a nice September day. The sun is shining, birds are singing, flowers are blooming. On days like these, kids like you should be playing outside. Unfortunately it is also the very first day at school in Red Moons Academy, and as such you are stuck inside for most of the day. Your boxes and bags have been taken by the Academy's staff and locked safely away until you can learn about your dorm assignments. In better times they would have taken them to your new rooms and unpacked them for you, but these days you'll have to perform such manual labour yourself. Given the state that the buildings seem to be in, overgrown with ivy and needing a new coat of paint, it is hardly surprising.

In less than an hour, an opening assembly will be held in the academy's still prestigious auditorium. That leaves you all with plenty of time to talk, socialize, and get to know your fellow students. After all, you'll be spending the next year or so with them.

It is a well-known fact that the Bay12 Forums must host at least one supernatural school RP, lest it be dragged into the void and never seen again. As such, I am obligated to tell you that I am doing my part for the forums and starting up such an RP for you all to enjoy. Given the 'success' of previous RPs, I expect this one to develop on similar lines. As such I would like to remind you all that the forum guidelines still exist, and you should follow them as closely as you can. It would be a shame for this to get locked by Toady One after all.

After a long drive to the base and a short wait through the security checkpoint, the pilots and other new arrivals to CFI California are allowed onto the base. A short orientation session has been planned by the base's managers and thus security guards escort everyone to the conference room. The little you see of the base is clean, modern and well-lit, looking more like a university than an international research facility. Your escorts give you no time to stop and explore the place, explaining that you all will get plenty of time to do so later.

After several minutes walking through the labyrinthine hallways you end up the conference room, a large room with floor-to-ceiling windows to let in plenty of light and give a marvelous view of the facility's robot hangars and surrounding countryside. The room has been set up like a kind of theatre, where several rows of seats face an open area at the front that acts as a stage. Several important-looking people wearing suits and businesswear sit at the back of the 'stage' and talk among themselves as they wait for the session to begin. Among them is Yakov Matveev, world-famous materials scientist and President of the Cold Fusion Initiative, and Olivier Villeneuve, former CEO of Mirabilia Pharmaceuticals and Head of CFI California, leaning so close to each other that their heads almost touch as they hold a whispered argument. Judging by the two technicians struggling to set up a slide projector at the back of the room it'll be a while before the orientation session actually starts. The hum of bored conversation fills the air as the new arrivals sort themselves into small groups and start finding places to sit.

((I hope that this intro isn't too barebones, but this'll give everyone a chance to introduce their characters and greet each other before the game starts proper.))

Cold Fusion initiative
IC Thread

On February 4th, 200X the Cold Fusion Initiative was started with the support of the superpowers of the world. Dedicated to fully exploring the civilian and military uses of cold fusion, first discovered in 1989, the CFI received lavish funding and support from its international backers and made rapid advances in the fields of computing, material development and energy research. After only 8 months many prototypes had finished testing and were starting to make their way onto the market. Even the pride of the CFI, giant combat robots that obsoleted the world's armies in a single stroke, were entering their final prototype stage and so a wide net was cast for suitable test pilots. People from all walks of life signed up for the prestige and hefty paycheck that came with being a pilot for the CFI. You are one of the lucky few chosen to be a pilot for the CFI, due to your combination of determination, talent and intelligence. It is now September 20th, 200X. After receiving basic piloting and self-defence training by the US military you arrive at the CFI's Californian Base to be debriefed about the Fusion-2 Robot Program and finally begin your job.

About:
Cold Fusion Initiative is a forum game inspired by super robot series of the 70s, such as Mazinger Z and Getter Robo. The players take the role of pilots for the CFI, taking control of overpowered robots to fend off a variety of unknown and terrible threats. The setting is the far-off year of 200X as envisioned by the 1970s. Flying cars scatter as giant robots clash in the streets, yet at the same time the NES is the cutting edge of personal entertainment systems and cellphones look and feel like a brick. The most important scientific development is the discovery of cold fusion in 1989. Cold fusion operates at a temperature of only 532 degrees Celsius, making fusion power safe and practical which was an important step in the development of giant robots. Politically the world is very similar to today with two exceptions. Full nuclear disarmament succeeded at the end of the Cold War and the USSR never dissolved, resulting in its relations with the US and rest of the world becoming much more congenial than they were historically.
