Other Games / MachiaVillain: RimWorld in a Haunted House?
« on: May 16, 2018, 11:33:14 am »
https://store.steampowered.com/app/555510/MachiaVillain/

I'm somewhat psyched about this game. From a lot of videos, it seems to take a lot from RimWorld - the building part at least.

You control a haunted mansion. Well, not exactly, because you start with an empty terrain plot and have to build it from scratch. By chopping trees, and mining rocks and metal.

You hire minions, which are your workers, have to keep them fed (with brains! and bones from your victims!). Then, you have to send invitations to groups of people and kill them with traps and minions - you get extra points for following horror movie conventions: the virgin dies last, don't kill the dog, also make sure each person is alone when they get killed. You need these extra points to advance your ranking in the guild of Evil Evilness or whatsitsname.

There's other stuff, but there are videos out there that explain it better than me, such as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZHsqQRRh7s

Also, it's in closed beta, so all there is for now is preview videos from youtubers. At least for the next 30 minutes or so! Because it's set to launch (as version 1.0 or early access, I'm not sure) at 10AM PDT! Stay tuned...

Ah here's the link to the steam store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/555510/MachiaVillain/

Other Games / Stardock's Star Control's Official Spiritual Prequel Kinda
« on: November 17, 2017, 10:25:24 am »
Hello everyone, I don't know if anyone's been following the progress of this, but Stardock bought the rights to the Star Control game (but don't have the rights to the actual plot or aliens, which is probably a huge turnoff for most) and are making a... prequel, I guess? It's called Star Control Origins, and today I noticed that a couple videos of the Beta are out.

Gameplay looks nice, there are premade ships but you can design your own, Terran ship at least looks very similar to the one in the original games.

Anyway, discuss. Here's are some links:

Life Advice / Recommend me a gaming laptop
« on: November 13, 2015, 09:47:08 pm »
So, I'm going to buy a new computer next month, a friend is going to be traveling to USA and bringing it back to me. I've checked a few models, including a Lenovo Y70, a MSI Leopard GP72 and a MSI Apache GE72.

At around the same price (my budget is $900-1100 range) I think the Y70 has the worst value (860 card, 8GB ram) while the Apache is probably the best (16GB RAM and a 960 nvidia card), so I'm leaning heavily on the Apache.

Any other recommendations that I should check out before I make my mind? Preferaby, something I can order from Amazon using their regular free shipping.

EDIT: I forgot, these are the specs for the GE72 Apache:

    Intel Core i7-5700HQ 2.7-3.5GHz
    16 GB (8 GB x2) DDR3L 1600 GHz RAM
1024 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
17.3-Inch Screen; NVIDIA Geforce GTX960M Graphics with 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM
    DVD SuperMulti; Windows 10

Price: $1,069.00

Other Games / The "Share Insurgency to unlock" Thread (GiveAway)
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:20:07 am »
Well, the latest Humble Jumbo Bundle 3 includes 3 copies to share with your friends. As a bonus, sharing the game lets you unlock an additional game.

So, I'm making this thread to avoid clutter and to help you help me. (or help me help you?). The next 3 people who reply to my post asking for a key will get a PM with the gift code. DON'T ASK ME FOR A KEY IF YOU PLAN TO PURCHASE THIS BUNDLE (for Obvious Reasons). It's a neat bundle (includes Saints Row 4 for $12 and a new game full of Tex Murphy cheesy acting!)

If you got this bundle and want to give away codes feel free to also post here offering your keys. I don't recommend posting the code in the open as it will lead to people getting annoyed that it's already been used, also people outside the forums can just view it and claim it.

EDIT: As is customary, I'm excluding "escaped lunatics" from this.
EDIT 2: Don't claim the gift link more than once PLEASE. If you do, you will be publicly shamed, tarred and feathered.
EDIT 3: Once more people offer keys, please be specific to who you're asking so that multiple people don't send you keys.

UPDATE: I'm out of keys, so hopefully someone else will offer more? Good luck!

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Fate of the Magitek Space Pirates OOC
« on: September 04, 2014, 01:34:27 pm »
Ok, here's where we'll discuss character generation for any new recruits for the game, since the other thread has turned into IC and I don't want to spam spoiler tags for pages :D

Here's the IC gameplay thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139466.0

Good day everyone!

I want to run a PbP game using Fate Core. As I want to play "by the book", instead of coming up with a setting by myself we're going to build it collaboratively. I want to go thru all the Game Creation steps and stuff.

Fate is a tabletop role-playing game centered about aspects, four actions, streamlined skill resolution and a system of Fate points (tokens) to make things more cinematic.

I'm looking for at least 4 active players, with a maximum of 6 or so. Anyone who's interested in signing up, please post here stating so and suggest what kind of game or genre you'd like to play. Others are welcome to suggest things, but signed players will have final say of what goes (hopefully without too much arguing :P). Let's see if there's enough interest to get this ball rolling...

To try and keep this simple, we'll be avoiding any extraneous add-ons to the rules, like complicated Magic Systems(TM) or rules for mecha components or Wuxia Kung Pow Elemental Fist Disciplines or whatever. Just the basic Default Skills and making those fit any genre (Stunts also help).

Full disclosure: I'm not by any means an experienced Game Master (or even player). I've run a few games in my life, I GMed GURPS once face-to-face and also a PbP game several years ago, been in a Fate Core game in Google+ which unfortunately died off pretty early, played a bit in Hangouts but had to drop because of timezone differences. I'm currently running a Mecha Knights sorta game for some friends IRL but it's really hard to get them together lately. I play some D&D on and off but I'm not a big fan, so I mostly just play support pregens in ongoing campaigns.

Update: I've added a new OOC thread for character creation and stuff that's been done after the game started.

Other Games / Jagged Alliance Online
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:20:41 pm »
Soooo...

Anyone has any idea what the hell this is like? First time I've ever heard of this.

Is it like, the remake with multiplayer tacked-on? A faithful conversion of the old one? A game engine with absolutely nothing to do with JA, but that uses the name for sales?

There's really little info out there or my Google-Fu is weak today.

(It's Free2Play BTW, just too lazy and my hard drive is too full to install any more stuff for now)

Other Games / Epic Inventor!
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:19:34 pm »
So, do you want to be an Epic Inventor?

Well, search no more: http://www.epicinventor.com/

So, like, you invent things, and you're epic! Or something!

Anyway just found this little game, seems like a year old but already version 1.0 and freeware.

Seems like a mixture of Terraria and BuildCraft, plus Boy and his Robot. I think.

Anyway, try it and post your experiences 8)

Other Games / Looking for multiplayer games for crappy computers
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:27:41 am »
Ok, I recall seeing a similar thread to this but I can't find it (and searching "multiplayer" is way too vague :P).

Please help me make a list of the bestest best multiplayer games that can be played in crappy non-GPU-enhanced computers (not outdated, just cheap... most of these if not all are at least dual core with 2GB RAM).

Anyway, here are the guidelines:

  • Should allow for a decent number of concurrent players (no less than 8, up to 12 would be awesome)
  • Should work in Windows XP over a LAN (DOS games using the Netware/IPX protocol probably won't cut it).
  • Should go easy on the graphics processors. 3D is ok but there's a limit. These computers are kinda OK running Counter Strike 1.6, but I don't think they'll handle the Source engine at all. Even Minecraft is WAY too slow at the fastest setting, but not sure if that's because the OpenGL support here is crap compared to DirectX).
  • Should NOT need a special downloader/account/internet service (ex: Steam) because #1: we have no Internet, #2 I don't want to force everyone to make accounts or buy their own copies (not saying the P-word, but just assume I'll buy my own used CDs somewhere and then install as needed)
  • Corollary to the previous one: simple to install. Just some zip file or a setup or a CD or whatever.

Some more background: here at the office, during break time we are always playing Age of Empires 2. Sometimes CS 1.6, but rarely. I generally don't play AoE2 because I find it frustrating and I'm a focused kind of guy, so that thing where someone is killing you but you don't even realize it because you're too busy scouting for sheep on the other side of the minimap... annoys me. So I'm looking to expand a bit the variety of the games here.

So, what I'm looking for:
  • RTS, preferably the kind that gets rid of quite a bit of micromanagement (I liked Kohan for example where you manage 5 or 6 squads and don't have to mess too much with what gets built where in your cities).
  • Coop games.
  • FPS Shooters aren't too high in the list. Compared to CS most FPS shooters are generally free-for-all slugfests. Plus the part where the GPU sucks :P. There are exceptions probably.

I don't want to put a hard limit on this part, because people are probably going to come with fun stuff I hadn't considered. So I'm keeping the Genre open. One suggestion would be that it should be somewhat casual (as far as an RTS like AoE can be casual :P rule-heavy and dialogue-heavy games like D&D Baldur's Gate are probably out, simple action hack&slash RPGs could be ok. Not sure how much my coworkers will be willing to learn).

Doesn't matter if the game is freeware or not. Freeware of course is a plus.

General Discussion / Another childhood story RUINED FOREVER
« on: March 03, 2012, 09:41:56 pm »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_White_and_the_Huntsman

Yeah, it stars Kristen Stewart, with Thor as the Huntsman... and Snow White becomes a skilled warrior and leads small army of battle-hardened dwarves. Which is kinda kickass actually.

But... Eight dwarves. EIGHT DWARVES?!

Thank you, guy who produced Alice in Wonderland, for messing with my childhood memories.

And now I have to delete all my Dwarf Fortresses because they HAVE BECOME A LIE with their 7 dwarves. Only 7 dwarves, that's so old fashioned. We need 8 dwarves like we need sparkly vampires!

Gaahhhhh!!! *stroke*

But yeah if they can pull it off better than that King Arthur movie maybe it won't suck balls.

Ok, probably any steam user knows by now, but thought it was too good to pass up.

All 3 Mount & Blade games are 75% off today. That's less than $13 for the whole bunch. Thought I point this out since M&B seems to be a well recommended game around these parts.

BTW, Portal is free until the 20th, so anyone who doesn't have it yet hurry and make your steam account and "buy" it, even if you don't intend to install it, so it gets permanently associated with your account.

NOTE: IF YOU GET PORTAL YOU CAN PLAY ANY MODS REQUIRING THE SOURCE SDK.

EDIT: Oh, Mirror's Edge is also 75% off if you like that sort of game.

UPDATE: Magicka Collection today at 75%, that's $6.24. I'm going to get it since I heard nice things about it in Bay12, hopefully it'll be a fun game. Maybe we can swap Steam accounts later to play multiplayer stuff :D

General Discussion / Smallest PC evarrrr (ok, maybe not)
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:46:04 am »
Our dear David Braben, known for his work in the Elite and Frontier game series, has developed a really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really tiny PC called the "Raspberry Pi". And it costs only about $25 to make... uses Micro SD as storage and provides HDMI for video output and USB for peripherals such as mouse and keyboard... check it out.

More info at their website: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

You can also see them running Ubuntu 9 in it.
