Other Games / Mortal Kombat 11
« on: May 03, 2021, 11:54:47 pm »
I searched thread titles for Mortal Kombat in Other Games but I didn't find one for 11, which surprised me. I picked it up on sale early in the Pandemic, and have only played against computer opponents until recently. I very much enjoyed the story modes (the Tsang Tsun DLC story was included). It is quite similar in format to the Injustice story mode, in that it essentially is watching a movie while playing the fight scenes. I would rate it the best Mortal Kombat movie I've watched when viewed from that perspective (also someone is producing a new Mortal Kombat movie I hear, hopefully that's good)

Spoiler: My background image (click to show/hide)

I played my first online match a few days ago and I had such a blast I played about 70 more matches hah. I was playing Kasual, the tournament 20 ends in a week or so so I figured I'd see how I do at Kasual until the next one starts.

The answer is there are people way better than me by leagues, which is cool. I like playing those. I once even was lucky enough to be matched up against somneone with thousands of matches on record while I had the too high estimate of 4% chance of beating them. They were really cool and pulled a lot of characters to beat me up with, so I could see what common character picks look like (he maybe was comparing my Kung Lao to common picks too; I've never seen another Kung Lao except the one he beat me with in our final match... pretty sure they even had to look at the moves list and still beat me 2x! after I took the first round due to their inexperience with the character I assume). I never won a full match against them, barely squeeked out a very few individual rounds when it was a good character matchup in my favor. The last match where they chose Kung Lao, the character I use, they won with a Brutality and punched my Kung Lao apart, at which point his Kung Lao turned his back and said "Clearly I'm better". I laughed my butt off but I think he felt bad a little and moved on to the next opponent.

I'm really glad I was matched against such a kind and superior opponent; I was able to learn from facing a much better player showcasing most of the common competitive picks (or so I assume).

I also fought someone awesome who just let the game pick a random character and preset and winged it. They ended up with Skarlett and were doing pretty well (I wish I knew how to send them a message in game to tell them what was going wrong after I figured it out; they switched to a jumping game sometimes and it was easy to counter with Kung Lao), we ended up pretty even until I figured out that person's Skarlett a little better.

However I can't find Kasual matches using the tournament character build restrictions (it's called Kompetitive mode or something; I think without confirming that it only restricts character builds to presets and isn't actually more 'kompetitive' than the other Kasual mode), which means once in a while I THINK I am running into a gimmick build that is just way too mechanically good for me to beat in my inexperience of how to beat certain moves. For example I played against a Noob Saibot that had the ground slide, the low teleport attack, and the unblockable (in my inexperience) but mid speed ranged attack. Now if it weren't for the ranged attack going through both standing and ducking blocks, you could just hold block low and wait to punish on a block since they are relying on low attacks. The problem is as it's unblockable, it staggers you at range and allows his teleport or slide; if you jump (or even if I used Kung Lao's teleports or Shaolin diagonal kick) he just does the upwards teleport. I quit out after a few matches because I'm seeing a trend in these kinds of builds already in the two day's I've tried online, in that their goal isn't interesting or educational matches if they stick around to beat up a noobie but rather a goal of forcing new players to leave through a combination of greater experience and builds that are designed to frustrate the inexperienced.

I guess my question would be, does anyone play this? Is it ever possible to find Kasual matches with the Kompetitive setting on (so that it's restricted to tournament allowed builds only)? I'm trying to learn my first character so while I could start over with a different one I'd rather get good at this one first; if I keep playing I'll learn a second one (or do it sooner if I'm still playing it when or if they add Reptile in a cheap DLC because that was what I used to play back on SNES and/or Playstation 1 in the old days). I like Kung Lao so far, it feels like maybe he isn't a popular pick so his moves aren't well known but I don't think he's top tier. I picked him because I thought he had the best line in the story:

Spoiler: Story mode spoilers (click to show/hide)

I also have some questions about unofficial etiquette. If I win first, I always do a Friendship. However this seems to enrage a small percentage of players. I was wondering if it's because Kung Lao's friendship involves a train, and if they are assuming that I am implying they need to train more to beat me. That would be rude; I just do the friendship unless they fatality me first; at which point I'll chop them up once if I'm able before doing friendships again. Am I somehow being rude without realizing it, and should go for a non-finishing move knockout (walk up and jab etc?) instead of spamming Friendships?

Spoiler: Friendships (click to show/hide)

I really like this game; I've only run into the above gimmick build issue maybe 4 times; but I also don't know enough to recognize which are gimmick builds to troll new players. I don't know the tournament allowed character builds, so for all I know that Noob Saibot could be a totally legit tournament build but I kind of doubt it (Kasual non-Kompetitive mode lets you use builds banned in the tournaments for being broken in some way for that kind of competitive play or something). For example of one that seems like it could be a tournament build played by a much better player, I've seen the same really nasty Joker build I can't touch a few times (the boxing glove extenders, the wheelchair guy, and the low batman puppet with the gun on the ground) but they were also both obviously way, way better than me. Same with a Scorpion with kombo mixups for days; I had to be perfect blocking to hit him. I foolishly rematched about 20 times; since then I've learned how to mix in low kombos so I might do better now as I was relying on grabs to get through blocks at the time. I came close to winning 2 a few times IIRC but no banana (he was a Scorpion in yellow you see). I stuck it out until I realized I couldn't win at my current experience level unless I was just perfect at guessing which high/low Kombo they would use, and then I stuck it out some more trying to achieve perfection, and then I kind of just hoped they would leave until I finally shamefully exited out.

I think what I did wrong was not doing that sooner, since I was basically allowing it to happen after a while, so now I guess until I figure out which are gamey builds and which are close enough to tournament equality to be a fun opponent I'll just bail when I'm not sure. At least I was learning Scorpion's kombos with that guy; the Noob Saibot I bailed on wasn't teaching me anything except what to watch out for on the accept match screen as far as what seems to a newbie like me to be a cheese build. Too bad the accept screen isn't past character select though; maybe it's a warning sign if they wait to see who you pick cause that guy beelined to Noob soon as I chose Kung Lao haha. I like when they do that and choose wrong though, there is one well regarded character Kung Lao is actually really good against but some people still counter-pick it.

EDIT: Characters I've seen in MP so far from memory
Liu Kang
Joker
Scorpion
Sub Zero (once, switched to their better character later)
Skarlett (random choice)
Noob Saibot
Sindel (showcased by that cool person, wrecked me)
Kano (once)
Kabal (once)
Jaqui (once)
Terminator a few times
Rambo more than terminator but not too common; one guy had the sweetest brutalities on me with him in an even matchup, Rambo is cool in this silly murder simulator
Erron Black (once, was one the people seemingly enraged by the Friendship as they won the next time, fatalitied me and disconnected)

The counterpicks against my Kung Lao seem mostly to be Scorpion, Liu Kang, and Noob Saibot in that order. I like when someone beelines to a character not caring what I'm picking because those are almost always fun matches, but my respect to the brave one who choose the character randomizer with the random preset.

Curses / LCS Music Mod
« on: August 29, 2016, 12:22:04 am »
I've used the midi files in LCS to make some .ogg files to replace the .ogg files currently in LCS. I like the music selection in LCS and I thought I could make something more unique. I used techno instruments and guitar synths to replace the traditional instruments in these old but good songs. I tried to use a lot of guitars as that fits with LCS. Some songs are various guitars only.
If I did this right you should be able to preview the .mp3 versions as well as download any of the contents of the folders I linked to.

The only song I didn't redo was the Ride of the Valkyries, because that version is already in guitar and sounds better than I could have made anyways.

I won't be able to check in and keep working on it. That's why I uploaded all the FL files. I am about to move somewhere without internet on Tuesday, so hopefully all these links work. I tested them by logging out and then trying to download them, and they work. If someone downloads some of it before the evening of the 30th please post here and let me know, that's my deadline when I start being bereft of the the internet for a while.

Finally: I give permission to whoever wants to use these FL files and only ask to be listed as a contributor. Anyone can share it as well, and I would be glad to see it rehosted elsewhere in case box ever goes down. It can also be used in further releases of LCS. I also want to thank the original authors of the .midi files as without their work I would not have been able to make these.

I'm watching a Tiger's game now so I thought I'd make this thread. It will be postseason before too long and I think Detroit will make it. I'll likely revive this thread at that point even should it moulder unnoticed but if there isn't interest at that point I won't keep it alive.

Post about your favorite teams and how they are doing or some such.

Other Games / Ace Combat Assault Horizon
« on: July 27, 2014, 04:15:07 pm »
I searched to see if this game had a topic, but failed to find one. I will leave a series of disjointed thoughts about why I recommend giving it a try if you can before the free Steam period is up. It's also on sale I think.

It's somewhat arcadey but not overly so if that makes sense. By that I mean the planes carry a few hundred of the standard lock on missiles; though maybe that's only on Easy mode.

What I found best about it was how it ran nearly flawlessly on my lowly machine. I played on easy as I figure playing with keyboard and mouse I was probably going to be at the computer's mercy otherwise. It is quite a pretty game from the cutscenes to the actual gameplay. I was alarmed by the lack of graphics options to turn to the lowest settings but it ran very well to my surprise. My machine can barely run the gpu side of planetside 2 even lower than what can be set in that games menu but it seemed to have no issues with this Ace Combat game.

My only gripe is that the Apache missions are clunky as heck to someone used to flying an ESF in Planetside 2. I got used to it though and other than that I had great fun once I turned on classic controls to be able to fly the jets. My ancient Aces over Pacific/Europe skills did me right while playing and I had only a little trouble readjusting to only having keyboard controls for the jets.

The campaign was fun, the last dogfight left me sweating. I liked the jet pilot missions the most but the others were fun too. I'm going to see if I can squeeze in a multiplayer match or two before the free period ends so I can see just how bad I am compared to someone who is really good at it. I'll also try out the other difficulties to see how bad the computer whoops on me. (the last dogfight was hard even on Easy. Easy must let you take a lot of damage because I was taking missiles to the chin frequently until I figured out rudder plus a turn in the F22 means his plane can't get it's nose on me so he spews five or six missiles that go wide before he goes after his objective again. It's takes forever to hit the guy, but that's good fun.)

I'd give it a 9/10 (though I'm only speaking for playing the campaign on this free weekend so far). I haven't played any flight sims in a while and the campaign hit the right notes for a kind of arcadey flight game. It was kind of fun to use the ol' arrow keys to steer an airplane around again.

I'll post a bit more in a little while, going to check out the other difficulties and see if I can squeeze in an MP match.

It's getting close to the playoffs.

I'm in the rare position of wondering if the Red Wings will make the playoffs. My guess is yes, though perhaps it will be a bit closer than necessary. I think it depends heavily on whether their defense can play other team's well. Keep an eye on the guy you are covering, defensemen, and counter their movements.

How do these work and is there any more information on these? Can they be used for agriculture? You could build a skyscraper in a city with these dedicated to cultivating fresh produce. I imagine the output is quite low, but still.

I enjoy running small forts that have limited workforce and no chance of nobility until children mature. Currently the population limit set in the init does not take effect until the Liason has visited your fort and left alive. This means I have trouble staying below 50 migrants and I can only imagine the endless undead this could spawn if the liason is particularly unlucky.

Therefore I submit the fix in the thread title, with no knowledge of whether it is a feasible solution with a favorable equation regarding ease of addition. Perhaps the liason could spawn directly on the map edge so as to be able to leave safely.

I expect all you Americans (North and South) to represent if'n your State (or favorite MLB player) has found themselves with a team in the enviable position of making the playoffs this year.

Also if this thread exists four pages back expect my duplicate thread to die a quick, silent, and painless death involving a locking mechanism and it's creator's spite.

To start, these guys:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only thing I have to say about Tigers baseball this year is they are making it TOO exciting in the playoffs. It was great watching this year either way. I don't like singling out members of a team because it seems unfair to me having to choose so many worthy players, but how about that Cabrera? Greatest hitter of my day and he's on my home team. I'll do what I don't like again for singling Prince and say he's been awesome both at bat and on defense. Great heads up plays by the Prince.

The rest of the Tigers; well you know who you are. From the great pitching this year from the Starters to the bullpen to the closers, to the excellent prospects from the Minor Leagues, to my Dad's favorite in Delmon ('Yay Delmon!') and everyone else I'm ashamed to not have mentined you in particular, it's one of the best ball clubs I've ever seen. Win this game for us all and we'll keep rooting for you until you make it to the World Series. Either way we've had one heck of a year and I know I for one will be very satisfied and you won't hear any boos from me; unlike that shameful treatment the Rangers and especially their slugger received in the Lonestar State. That's not to say I won't be happier to Bless You Boys though.

The last game I couldn't see due to it being on a station I don't get, which is a shame. I know game 5 is viewable though so keep your heads up Tigers and I'll be keeping both eyes on you.

Also, to Jim (and the other coaches who are equally excellent), thanks a ton for being our skipper and doing such a fine job all around. I know you all are beloved here in Michigan as much as we love to watch your team in action.

While I can't make such a glowing post every year remember that I'll probably still be watching baseball. My thanks to you all.

Aand I drop my browser shields to visit twitter and find it's not the real Phil Coke. The hell Twitter? I take back what I said about wishing I knew your school of internet wizardry. It's all misdirection and illusion. When I want to confuse a female beach volleyball player (aka sports-talented professional athletic sandy bikini babe that constantly hops and jumps around) so I can appear behind her as a wealthy gentleman I'll get back to you.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/york-senate-bill-seeks-end-anonymous-internet-posting-162549128.html

Called an anti-piracy bill but in effect it is an anti-dissent bill. While the government already has ways to investigate, it would assist non-governmental investigative services to more easily target individuals by forcing them to provide information theoretically difficult for the private sector to obtain legally otherwise. Essentially it would assist any individual or institution interested in the content of your forums posts to more easily gather or pay someone else to gather as much information about you as legally possible. While I assume it's been crafted to benefit the many political organizations with millions of dollars to spare to intelligence corporations, I question whether the people behind the bill have considered similar organizations such as the Black Panthers to name one that the introducer's own party seem concerned about since they see them everywhere.

Political gain for the ruling coalition

Following spoilers from the above article and portions bold for significance:

Also if I remember correctly the compromise that led to the coalition allows ultra Orthodox Jewish people to be exempt from the otherwise mandatory national draft. After all, just because you are a driving force for war doesn't mean your sons ought to fight it apparently. There are people you don't agree with and political opposition you can force to fight by making laws such as this one.

Remember, fighting Iran = fighting Russia in their proxy as far as foreign policy goes. To assume that Russia wouldn't at the very least ship arms to Iran when they do so now is naive; especially with their willingness to ship arms to countries failing to put down popular protests on their own. To underestimate the influence of Gazprom profits on Russian foreign policy is foolish.

Speaking of energy concerns the following spoiler is: From inforwars

A question might be why now? Here is the answer:

Thanks, loyal patriots of AIPAC!

Anyone remember this? Iran 'Green' Revolution attemp You know, that thing that was ignored by seemingly every politician that mattered, that if supported would have prevented this. Too bad politicians thought they could take personal advantage if they ignored it. I guess it would be unfair to the Israelis to risk denying their ability to threaten America with the possibility of world war in order to influence an American Presidential election, obtain foreign aid and if the Yankees are gullible enough maybe do a little conquering and occupation of the Israeli's very own (if Russia is cowed away from providing open military support and instead decides to only make the internationally standard profit from selling war material to both sides.)

General Discussion / Likely bad news for PC users waiting for Windows 8
« on: February 29, 2012, 03:39:47 pm »
It seems Microsoft has used it's experience porting other platform's products to PC  products without optimizing for PC performance to just say, heck we can do it to the whole operating system at once now!

http://news.yahoo.com/windows-8-consumer-preview-first-look-microsofts-operating-233728084--abc-news.html

From the article:
The Seattle-based company has designed Windows 8 not only for laptops and desktops, but also for tablets. It was built from the ground up with your fingers in mind. It is meant as much for a touch screen as for a laptop.

Microsoft has also included an Xbox companion app, which allows you to use the tablet as a controller for games running on a regular Xbox gaming console.

The second is not a bad thing considering the somewhat low sustem requirements. If 8 can be purchased separate and can be plugged into old PC hardware then I'm all for it in this instance; I'd love to be able to use the keyboard I'm better at using to take away some of the edge X-box vets have on me.

The first thing I listed I suppose I'll be better able to complain about once I've given the open beta a try. That apparently just started, so you might want to give it a try. It's more of a consumer preview I suppose; but I guess I should be glad to get even that and it raises my hopes for the OS.

http://www.windows8update.com/download-windows-8-beta/

I'm not sure how the beta works; like if you have to replace your old OS with this one. I'll let you know if I figure it all out once I download it.

From: http://sanders.senate.gov/petition/?uid=f1c2660f-54b9-4193-86a4-ec2c39342c6c

Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in a case called Citizens United vs. FEC.

The Saving American Democracy Amendment states that:

Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people.
Corporations are subject to regulation by the people.
Corporations may not make campaign contributions or any election expenditures.
Congress and states have the power to regulate campaign finances.
