SteamDF: any way to play it without tiles?(ascii). I've not been able to figure it out and I'm a DF old timer... I *really* prefer no graphics on it.

So I am traveling and I got a raspberry pi 4 with a small screen. My only devices at home are said raspberry pi, a cellphone, and a laptop. I dont have a secondary screen. I need a secondary screen in order to use said screen because raspberry 4 wont display anything unless I type this

Other Games / Stirring abyss: Xcom/Darkest Dungeon hybrid?

You might have heard of this game.  You play as the crew of a submarine that fell down a crevice and ended up in a... strange place. Lovecraft vibes galore.

Now, the obvious gaming comparison is Terror from the Deep. And indeed in some ways you could consider the gameplay newcom-styled.
I  get a strong "Darkest Dungeon" vibe from the metagame however, at least in story mode. You have different rooms in the sub which you repair using the stuff you scavenge during missions, and they give you more options. Sanity loss due to encounters and special objects very much happens. Focus is on smaller 3 or 4 sized teams. You have an "air' timer that can be renewed but can cause sanity loss in a way similar to DD's torchlight

There is a second "Endless mode" which I've not tried yet. I assume its exactly what it says kn the tin. No idea on how it works metagame-wise


All in all I like it well enough to recommend it. It's not too expensive either and it's a decent, not-resource-hogging indy

Though this game looks similar to other games in the genre, it plays very differently. It is a true RPG, with many stats and character classes. TLDR: "NO! This is not Terraria! This is Diablo sideways!". In the makerīs own words, at least.

And yet.... to me it looks a whole frigging lot like Terraria. Or Starbound.


Uglier than Terraria or Starbound, if I may say. THough I understand that itīs a single manīs project.


The maker of the game says itīs Diablo, not terraria, because there are classes and stats. Whatever. It plays like Terraria, "class skills" are objects that work much like any other crafted item in Terraria-like games. There are mods that add classes and stats to Terraria too.
I get what he wanted to do, "minecraft meets diablo". And I get that the had to cut down a lot because heīs going solo. But... the final result is way too much like a simplified, less aesthetically pleasing Terraria Starbound, in my book. A bit more lightweight at 50mb, but Terraria is no heavy burden with 280 either.
Some of the mechanics are a bit more streamlined than in itīs inspirators, which is nice.

So, is it bad? Not really. IN a way you get into the action faster in ILB than in Terraria or Starbound. Easier, too, which makes it better for coffeebreaks. Thatīs sort of nice. It can keep you entertained for a bit.

But itīs pretty damning that this game is around 16€ when you can get Starbound for 14 and Terraria for 10. Itīs still in development so it might improve, but by the very nature of the project I expect changes to come in very slowly.

Thatīs the thing. As things are now, if I wanted to play a Diablolike Iīd play... I dunno, Torchlight 2, or Grim Dawn (not least because you have to stretch the definition A LOT to call this a Diablolike). If I wanted a 2D minecraft/rpg Iīd go with Starbound or Terraria. I have better options for everything it does :/


And yet... Iīm leaving it installed, and playing from time to time. At 50mb itīs not a big cost to my hard drive. And who knows. It might surprise me.  But I certainly cannot recommend this at full price right now.

So there is a sale that ends in a day give or take a few hours. Massive discount. So my question is: What do I get out of each game. I hear a lot about "mortal empires" campaigns. Do I need to get WH2 alongside with 1 as a sort of DLC to have a reasonable number of playable factions?

Hello, so I hired some 10 monster slayers thinking they might actually be good... but I've been reading they're rather shitty.

Is there any way to properly manage these guys? Not so much for cavern monsters, as to use them as protection vs raiding parties

DF Gameplay Questions / Feature complete smaller worldgen recipes?

Basically, I want a world with plenty of necromancers, megabeasts, and a few civilizations warring about, but small enough for it to be able to run worldgen for more than 1000 years without crashing, and without necromancers, titans, et al completely dying out.

Is there any known worldgen recipe that fits this?

At it's core this is a tactical RPG, with procedural campaigns, in which you command a ragtag mercenary company, in a very grim, very dark world.  Your main character was afflicted by a mutation during an experimental procedure by an alchemist, and you travel the world looking for a solution to your ills. This is... as much as I've figured out of the main plot so far, but more unveils as the game goes on.
Graphics: very good, hand drawn. Vaguely reminiscent of Darkest Dungeon.

The gameplay itself:
- It's hex based strategy. Pretty much traditional hex-based strategy. Terrain is very important. If you have the high ground for instance you have an offensive advantage and a defensive penalty over those who dont. If the height difference is high enough and you use a ranged character, the damage you can deal is dangerous, and noone can strike back at you.... but if you get knocked off your perch, it might be game over.

- In the overmap you roam around gathering resources and finding places to explore. Map is proceduraly generated as well, clues you in as to how difficult a prospective encounter will be. After encounters you get loot, mutators (kind of... equippable special abilities), and resources which can be used in various ways.


- Tactics impression: I think the stat-to-rule-them-all is agility to act first and more often, followed by vitality (HP), strenght (plusdamage), focus (this one is the least by far.... once you build up enough focus you trigger party-wide special abilities.... but I get the feeling it's too situational and they're not that much better than the default ones?)

- More tactics-impressions: I think battlefield control abilities trump raw damage, in general.


- Integrated graphics support: Runs perfect, at least on 2017+ systems.

All in all, it seems a very entertaining game. Strategy/wargame lovers will probably enjoy it.

Now, I've been playing this game for a long long time, but I just revisited it after a.... not that long hiatus, really, I tend to revisit this very often.

Basically, it's an utterly reduxed XCOM, if you like. To coffee break extremes. There's a zombie apocalypse, your goal is to rescue as many people as possible from the zombies. To help you with this you have a number of mercenary teams, which you have to use as well as you can.


Part of the challenge is that you don't actually choose (in the default gameplay that is) WHICH mercenaries you have on any given mission, as every turn you get a shuffle of which teams you can actually use and which teams are "away". So in a way it's also an excercise on how to deal with suboptimal situations: you won't always get the mercenary "dream team" you'd like. Sometimes you have to make do with the dregs, and simply survive to fight another day.

All in all I think you can sum the game, as I said before, as an extremely streamlined xcom, which DOES make it very suited for casual gaming during breaks, but it doesn't do the thing justice. Really, this game is brilliant. Maybe a better analogy would be to say it's the TETRIS of XCOM-likes. Sure, there are more complex games, and more flashy games, but there's a beauty to it's simplicity that makes it extremely addictive at the same time.

It has been around 9 years since Blendogames released this game, and 8 and a half since I got it from Humble. I don't think I ever stopped playing it. Really, this is worth your time. Give it a whirl. If these guys made a sequel to Atom Zombie Smasher I'd get it, or kickstart it, without hesitation.

Whatīs the current consensus on the performance of the different print modes? There was a post on the subject 10 years ago (more below), but I donīt know to what extent things have changed in the interim.

OLD (pre-2010s) consensus

2D: Use 2D graphics (SDL) for everything. This works everywhere; SDL deals with any double-buffering that needs to be dealt with. Kinda slow, though. Otherwise works basically like partial:0.

STANDARD: Actually, rendering the entire screen every frame isn't that slow, if you do it via OpenGL and have reasonable code. That's what this mode does.

PARTIAL: On some setups, just rendering the tiles that changed worked. Partial does just that; PARTIAL:2 renders each changed tile three times, in consecutive frames, to cover triple-buffering. Unfortunately many newer GPUs discard and overwrite the frame-buffer between frames, and then this doesn't work.

ACCUM_BUFFER: Uses the ancient glAccum call to save and restore the contents of the window between frames, working around the driver's discarding its contents. Usually the slowest mode of all, but some people have had good results. Presumably the others are even slower for them.

FRAME_BUFFER: Basically the same thing, but using newer GL frame-buffer extensions to render to a texture instead, and blitting that texture to screen once a frame. It saves at least one copy vs. accum-buffer.

Both frame-buffer and accum-buffer use partial:0 under the covers, they just wrap that method appropriately in order to avoid flickering.

VBO: A variant of STANDARD that uses vertex buffer objects to explicitly tell the GPU what data doesn't change between frames, namely the location of the various tiles. This marginally improves performance vs. standard, if it works, which it should.

SHADER: Dumps the entire DF graphics array to GPU memory, and programs the GPU to interpret it on its own. Dramatically improves performance, but basically only works on geforce 8000-series and above, or the equivalent ATI. I think there's some 7000-series card (7950?) that also supports such shaders, though.

So...

- It had rough analogues of DC comics main heroes (Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, etc)

- But they were EVIL, tyrannized people, and openly procclaimed themselves to be divine

- And they weren't quite what they seemed - they were actually body-hopping aliens who gave their hosts incredible powers, and had done this to a number of civilizations before doing it to humanity.

- Main evil character was a superman analogue and might have been called Atlas, or Antaeus, not sure
