DF Bug Reports / [40d2-win] Dwarf Fortress.exe doesn't load
« on: December 25, 2008, 11:07:57 am »
Tried installing and running new version, but no dice. Running "Dwarf Fortress.exe" uses a little bit of CPU for a fraction of a second, then does nothing. No new processes are added into the process list.

Salient system specs:
  • Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop
  • Running Windows XP, Service Pack 3
  • Inspiron I6400 CPU
  • T2050 @ 1.60 Ghz
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • Mobile Intel 945M Express display adapter (built-in)

Anyone else having this issue?

DF General Discussion / Re: Programmers

Hobby programmer here - 4-5 years solid experience with C++ (engineering school and a hobby), but also know a smidge of Java, a (deprecated) assembly language, VHDL, MATLAB, PSPICE and several obscure and unimpressive job-related scripting languages.

Ah, okay. That must have done it. They all had Novice Woodcutter, Novice Carpenter, Novice Axedwarf. This is probably not actually a bug, then.

How is it a bad thing if everybody is friends with everybody  :-\

It's bad cause I was starting a hermit challenge.

6 friends dying right at the beginning = really fast suicide.

I don't think its doing that - My first attempt had a "filled with boundless rage" (or whatever) dwarf, and this one (the fifth) definitely doesn't, and still has all-friends relationships. The only thing I can think of that might be doing it is they all had the exact same professions and skills (Had been trying a hermit challenge - dwarf with the fewest friends was gonna be the one), although I hadn't really thought that that came into the equation at all.

EDIT: OCD typo-fix, go go go!

I just genned three forts in a row on a pocket world, and in all three forts, every starting dwarf was friends with every other starting dwarf. I'm assuming this is unintentional.

World parameters follow:

EDIT: Further testing reveals that the relationships are only constant when using the same embark profile - I swapped it to a different one, and the relationships finally changed.

I found that a better use of lightning is to engrave a permanent Elbereth square and watch all the monsters flee in horror. Now magic missile + wall + amulet of reflection on the other hand...

The magic missile hits the vampire lord!
The magic missile hits the vampire lord!
The magic missile reflects from your medallion!

OOC: Hmm, could a dwarven axe berserker/kamikazi who likes to get into bar room brawls and practically slosh with dwarven spirits when he walks but be the opposite of Stav and Major in terms of caring be a Zefon? I never really paid much mind to what dwarven god the crazy danger addicted freak would be interested in for the character idea, as I am not familiar with the dwarven pantheon.

Actually, Sulari's a Zefonist, too - Only serious difference between the crazy danger-addicted freaks is that one gets in bar fights and cares about whats going on, and the other is way too busy ushering squillions of gobbos and Dread Camels into their next rebirth to notice.

A roguelike in which "Do I swing Masamune at the guard, kick over the table and take cover behind it, throw a fireball at the curtains across the room, or rip this piece of iron piping out of the wall and hurl it down the stairs?" is a valid tactical question.

Oh well. Might as well get in on it while it lasts.

Reason for wanting to hench with us: The money's good, and some places don't much care if you skim a little off the top.
How do we know you aren't a spy?: I won't be, for as long as you pay more than the competition...

GURPS is definitely a lot better for modeling DF than D&D is. It's a bit more simulation, a little less game - More chance of crippling wounds and horrible death, less magic, one-use-per-day special moves, and obscene power creep. That said, the full GURPS rules, though more appropriate for DF, can get really complicated - I'd imagine way too slow for a play-by-post, though I've never tried to run one myself. Also, expensive book.

I remember playing Infantry in middle school. That game was pretty fun, once you got the hang of it. I timed joining up badly though - Played it for maybe three months and it suddenly went pay.  :'(

Wow.

Alligators : Kobolds :: Megabeasts : Dwarves

You also would have to span the entire length of the localmap with your fort. IIRC, you can't embark two forts on the same localmap.

There was actually a PC mod floating around that just eliminated cliff racers completely. I remember seeing it on a fan site somewhere. Don't think I ever bothered to try it out though - by the time I found it, I had a jump spell that let me cover four worldmap squares in a fifteen-second leap.
