Other Games / Oxygen Not Included: Alpha Release
« on: February 15, 2017, 08:19:29 pm »

Oxygen not included, Klei entertainments new game was released into alpha today.

It is a colony management game, inside a massive asteroid a strange gate lights up, depositing 3 duplicants and a box of rations into a chamber that, luckily, has enough oxygen, for now at least. You control the duplicants, setting orders for them to do various tasks as you manage your resources, mining out areas, making food, beds. You'll have to start producing oxygen shortly, as the oxylite rocks will quickly exhaust themselves. You'll also need to find ways to power your machines and gather water for your plants and dupes as you branch dig out and explore the asteroid. The game models both gas and liquid flow, which becomes very important as you have to manage your air, trying to keep it pure of toxins and carbon dioxide and with plenty of oxygen for your dupes to breath.

Right now there's not a huuuge amount to the game, I played for about five and a half hours, and in that time I think I managed to more or less see most of what the game has to offer thus far.  There's some balancing that needs to be done, and obviously a lot of content needs to be added before it's a full game. But despite that it's fun, or at least I had a lot of fun, managing my dupes and exploring the area, setting up ways to get more resources to keep myself going. Currently the game costs 20 bucks, and you have to buy it from their forum, logging on with your steam account. I dunno why they did such a strange thing rather then just letting you buy it from steam, I'd conjuncture to keep it to a relatively small audience as they work on the alpha before they do a full launch into early access (what a strange way to say it... "Full launch into early access." But I guess that's how games work these days.) on the steam store.

Link to post where you can buy it from.

Anyway, I figured since we don't have a thread for this game (afaik?) I'd go ahead and make one, so that if anyone is interested enough to buy into the alpha (like I was) they could find out how to buy it and perhaps we can talk about our experiences or whatever.

I've played one game so far, lasting the whole 5.5 hours I played. During it I found that my whole group more or less was on constant 100% stress, but apparently that didn't matter to them that much, it certainly didn't seem to do much until the end (where I guess it sorta killed me). I ended up dying when I ran out of power. I burned up all my coal and the hydrogen generators were... Fairly useless. I couldn't use the hamster wheels for power since the super stressed dupes would keep breaking them. Eventually I gave up trying to fix the situation and waited for them to all starve to death.

Masterwork DF / 6.2, issue with brick splitting blocks
« on: October 24, 2015, 10:22:19 pm »
So, after 4 years of no problems an issue has suddenly popped up in my human town. Suddenly my masons are refusing to use the brick splitting blocks. Even if I break them down and rebuild them, or make a new one elsewhere, everyone has just stopped using it. All my other workshops are still functional, even my masons shops can make blocks just fine.

After a bit of testing I've found out that the problem persists if I move my save to a new download of masterwork, and it also persists if I use one of the backup saves, even from before the problem existed, although not if I use a new world made in a new download of masterwork. I've not tried a new world in the old version of masterwork, as df crashes when I try to make a new world, not quite sure what's up with that, might be related.

Pretty much the only thing I can think of that might be related is that I recently did a civ alert to restrict everyone to a burrow for a few weeks. Although I don't know if that is connected at all, but it's the only thing different I've done recently (I did it in winter and only noticed the brick splitting blocks not working in spring, so who knows...)

I'm not totally sure if this is the right place for it. But I'm just hopeing someone might have a clue as to my issue. It's not a game ending bug, since I could just use masons shops, but it will certainly cost me tens of thousands of more stones over the course of the game if I don't find a way to fix it.

Other Games / Ryzom: A interesting MMO
« on: August 22, 2013, 04:44:00 pm »
Recently I have been getting into a old mmo called Ryzom. There have been a few threads on this in the past, but they are all pretty dead, so I decided to start one of my own.

Blurb: The Saga of Ryzom is a Science Fiction/Fantasy MMO that came out in 2004. It seems pretty noticeable for a couple of cool ideas it has. Actions (such as a dagger stab or spell) can be customized from basic parts, team play is hugely important, and in addition to the normal of 'fighter' and 'magic user' there are major advancement paths for 'forager' and 'crafter'. In fact, I would say foraging is pretty much just as legitimate a profession choice as fighter. That said, it is a old MMO, so you gota keep in mind there are a lot of things people hate nowadays. Almost all the quests I have seen are 'kill X number of Y animals' or 'gather X number of Y items'. Additionally a lot of modern polish is simply missing, despite the fact that the game has been out for almost ten years it's had a rough time in the past and so is still hugely janky in some places. And quite frankly it's pretty grindy some times. I have personally been having a lot of fun playing it with some friends, but If any of these things upset you or if you can't find anyone else to play it with (hopefully this thread will fix that issue) it is likely not the game for you.

Story and Races: The world of Atys is apparently a giant tree, although it's also clearly spherical and has deserts, so what's up with that? At any rate. There are four main races who are collectively called the Homin. The Empire building, Noble, Arrogant Matis, who are pretty much humans, they have a interest in biology and genetic engineering, there is a abandoned Matis city in the tutorial area surrounded by giant deadly plants, take from that what you will. The honorable, Desert Dwelling, Warrior Fyros who think of themselves as protectors and have a affinity for Fire, they are pretty much humans as well. The Mysterious, Magical, Nature loving Religious Zoraï, they are masters of electricity and magnetism and they have close ties to the Kami and genetically bond freaky masks to themselves to honor the Kami, they are pretty much night elves with freaky masks. Last and likely least, the short, carefree, inventive exploring Tryker, who have a affinity for wind and water, they used to be slaves to the Matis and are pretty much tall gnomes.

As far as I can tell the races are totally cosmetic, after the tutorial you can even pick which major racial city you start in, although apparently it is hard to reverse that choice.

Additionally there are the two powerful and mysterious races:
The Kami, who are strange and magical... Dudes, physiology does not seem consistent. They taught magic to the Homins are generally into magic and nature and balance and stuff like that. They seem to have good relations with everyone but the Karavan and especially close relations with the Zoraï.
The Karavan are the master of technology and heavily religious (ironic considering that the Zoraï like the Kami more). They appear to be humaniod, but I have never seen one outside of their spess outfit. (Not seen one at all really, not far enough in the game.) They appear to have good relationships with all the Homin races, perhaps the Fyros like them the best, or that might just be bias on the part of the few npc Fyros I have talked to.

Both of the major races were in a cold war with each other until the the Kitin came. The Kitin are a insect race who came from deep within the roots of Atys, probably uncovered by a Fyros expedition. They slaughtered most of the Homin and forced them to the top of the world. I don't know much about them, but I am guessing they are the main bad guys and they might have a little bit of 'revenge of nature' theme going on with them.

Price: It's important to note that the game is in fact not free. The current subscription fee is about $10 a month, honestly a little expensive in this day and age. But luckly it has a very extensive free trial, the only limit to the free trial that I have been able to find is that it puts a max level of 125 on all your skills. I've personally sunk ten hours or so into the game, and assuming that I totally focus on only one skill I believe at this rate I could reach that cap in maybe another 25-30 hours, assuming level gain does not slow down. But realistically I have much longer to go, because focusing on a single spell would be pretty strange.

Skill system: In Ryzom there are no classes per say, instead you simply have four skill trees. Fighting, Magic, Foraging, and Crafting. Every time you do a action from one of the skills you get XP in that skill. When you max out a skill the next level of that skill opens up. For example, all the base skills start with a level cap of 20, so when you level your fighting skill up to 20 you unlock Melee fighting and Ranged fighting, both of which start at level 20, and then if you level up, say, Melee fighting to level 50 you unlock One Handed Melee Fight, Two handed Melee Fight, and Close Combat which all start at level 50. After that level up on of those categories you start specializing and specific types of weapons such as smashing or piercing. After that you start specializing in specific weapons, and then finally the last category is mastery of those specific weapons. All in all the manual claims that there are a total of over 2000 levels to gain in fighting. That said, levels don't mean a bunch by themselves, to the best of my knowledge they only offer points to be used in the Action crafting system.

Action crafting: A very interesting part of Ryzom is the ability to craft your own... Everything really. Almost everything you can do in the game is called a action and each action is made up of one or more Stanza. There are four categories for actions to the best of my knowledge: Fighting. Magic. Foraging. And Crafting. Every time you level up your skill you gain 10 points for that category, which can be spent buying Stanzas or if you don't want to bother with making your own you can directly buy prebuilt actions, which from what I can see are priced based on the Stanzas in them that you do not have yet and they unlock all the Stanzas that they are made of. Additionally, in some cases it appears that you need to at least buy the first level of a Stanza from a prebuilt action.

Team play: From what I have been able to see this game is hugely team based. Even in the tutoral it is impossible to beat all the missions on your own. You simply need team mates. Additionally, many spells are team based, you can heal tons of health and even mana, but not to yourself (although you can get self heals that are fairly effective for a quick bost, but they have a long cool down.) Additionally many spells are channeled, so you can't do anything else as you cast them. You can even turn invincible, but they can't attack like that, so you need someone to do damage as you tank. All in all I heavily suggest you find some friends (of which I am sorta volenteering to be one) or hopefully this will get popular enough on bay12 that I can set up a guild or something so we can get together for harder quests.

Crafting: There is a deep and hugely important crafting system with tons of levels and qualities and complexity that I don't really understand because I have not done the tutorial on it. From what I can see is that everything is made up of materials (such as skin and eyes and rocks) and all the materials have their own quality, which effects how good the item is, level, which effects how it interacts with Stanza and higher level is likely better, and effects. So you might have boots made of like worm skin, cow bones, and horse oil, and it would have different stats not only based on the quality of the things that when into it but would also have different stats and purpose then boots made of worm skin, cow bones, and wolf oil. (Note: All the animals and plants and such in the game have nonsense fantasy games, and I doubt any of them give oil, so this example is not a real example.)

Afterword: All in all, I am having a lot of fun playing this game with friends, and was hoping that I could get some more people to have fun and join me. Maybe if enough people get interested I will look into making a Bay12 guild. It's a fairly light download (compared to modern games at least) and its a huge amount of free content, so hopefully some of you will be interested in trying it out.

My character is a Fyros named Zahia who is specializing in magic (although I may turn to tanking soon.) and my friend is a Fyros mage called Melora. We are still going though the massive tutorial area (it is a massive tutorial, probably the equivalent to a zone or more in WoW) And would be happy to meet any of you dudes.

So my fr... Pe... Bay12ites. I have decided something. That something is that I will, at great personal cost (about two bucks) play a game for you.

You are welcome.

But really, since Steam said "here, have all the X-COM games for two bucks!" I said sure. And now I do. So. I am going to Let's play the first one because that is the only one that I can get to work. Now. Onto the game.

X-COM UFO Defense is a super old game (18 years or so) from MicroProse, In it you watch powerlessly at humans are wiped out by a alien invasion. Or at least that is what I do. I hear tell that some people fight the aliens, but I am pretty sure they are lying. Now, this will not be a "blind" LP because I have already "played" five game.

I use the term played lightly. The first game I was unable to keep up with the tech of the aliens and they shot down all my jets, the second game was much the same AND china joined with them. The Third game all my forces were wiped out attacking a base and on the fourth game one of the basic aliens (think little gray guys) killed my tank and eight guys by himself. The fifth game, and the only one I did not rage quit, I will not go into too deeply, but suffice to say it ended within a month of game time.

Once I die or rage quit (not likely, I am willing to last to the bitter end on this one) or get told it is hopeless I will restart the game if there is still interest.

Anyway, as watchers you can do two main things.

The first and most entertaining is claiming a guy. You can tell me what you want me to call them (I don't know if it is possible to rename blokes, but if it is please someone tell me), how they like to die fight and  what weapons you want. These guys will last for a average of .75 missions, so once you die feel free to grab another.

Secondly and most importantly. You can give me advice. Since I obviously suck, I will most likely listen to you in the most hilariously incompetent way ever. I will take advice on basically everything. Starting with where to put our first base and what to call it. Also what difaculty to put it on. I want to put it on the easiest possible, but if you guys want us all to die a lot quicker then I guess I can bump it up some.

Go go go!

Also I got a patch so some things (I have so far noticed starting base lay out... And how I move the globe around, but you guys can't see that anyway) will be different.

I am getting a weird glitch on these forums, basically, a large empty space appears above each post. Some times there is a horizontal rule, but not always.

Here is a photo of what I mean.

Lords of Creation. The long running form tradition and possibly the game that started all the god games that seem so popular. But alas, the formites who normally run it seem to have faded away for the most part, and so too did LoC. But, now I have gotten a request to start a new game of it, so I thought, why not?

Welcome to the sixth installment of that forum classic. Lords of Creation!

In lords of creation each player is a god, a Lord of Creation if you will. The players work together to mold a multiverse with each other. As time goes by, the gods grow in power and mortals start to appear, soon realities clash and civilizations collide as the Lords of Creation play their game with the universe.

Sign up is easy, all you must do is post your god in the OOC thread and I will say if you are accepted, I will accept pretty much anything that is not hugely inappropriate. Once you are accepted you can then start posting.

Some parts of the game rely on D&D fluff, but do not worry over much about that as the rules of this game do not have much to do with D&D, if you need help with a fluff option (such as picking a class) PM me or post in the OOC thread.

Spoiler: Sign up sheet (click to show/hide)

Actions are the way your godly might interacts with the multiverse, but even gods have their limits and they can only do so much at a time. Thus you will be restricted to a certain number of action points per real life week and every Monday you will be restored to full.

Spoiler: Free actions (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Actions (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Combat (click to show/hide)

Because the Actions and combat were copy and pasted wholesale from the last game, there may be some errors. Post in the OOC thread if you have any questions.

When making a plane please use the information found in the SRD hypertext document for 3.5, found here http://www.d20srd.org/srd/planes.htm#planarTraits

You can role play the mortals in your flock. However, the power levels are limited. Keep in mind that less then one in perhaps many thousand will reach level five, and level 10 heroes are the type of people who are sung about for hundreds of years after their death.

Do not post anything OOC on this thread, all talk about the game and other things goes in the OOC thread.

AP does not carry over from week to week.

I'd say we can begin when we get five gods. Others can feel free to join at any time.

And yes a lot of this was taken from Psycho Jelly and Filiusenox. So a big thank you to Psycho and Filiusenox.

The OOC thread is here.

So, I read the kingdom come LP and now I really want to play this game, the thing is that it is six years old. The question is can it compare to Empire total war: Whatever version I have. Six years is a long time and the new one is coming out in two, is it worth the $10 (IE can it keep me entertained or will I forever be thinking it is not as good as total war) or should I wait a agonizing two years to get it.

Sigh... It sucks being a lost soul in hell... you are the lowest of the low, even imps can order you around or eat you if they feel like it. If only you could gather a few souls to become more transform into a more powerful demon... but as a lost soul any demon will just take any souls you gather away.

Today to have been ordered to guard a small soul gate. Apparently all the demon are to busy, something must be going down in the human lands. Not that any will tell you anything... This gate is where souls come into hell... but as it is only a small gate to a relatively pious human city you will be lucky if it gets even one soul in a year, not enough to power your transformation. Damn, why could you not get a place like New York or London? Not some city where sin is a way of life? That is where the souls are... not this city... what was it called? ... Hiroshima you think.

Oh shi

Hello my friends, why don't you join me and sit down? I have a tale to tell of the five legendary heroes.
It all began one  day when...

I have decided to start up my own Dnd game. The game will be set in the world of Eberron (don't worry if you do not have the book) with one major change, because I do not like the planescape of Eberron we will be replacing them with the generic Dnd Planes with Dal Quor and Xoriat still in because they play a major role in history. Another smaller change will be that until recently it was imposable to travel to other planes unless they were coterminous, and even then only the more powerful magics worked. After the last war a chink in reality appeared, mages are still trying to find out why, and it became possible to travel between the planes even when they were not coterminous. Ancient gates to other planes from the the age of giants and the age of monsters are now working again and their secrets are for the taking.

The game starts in the year 998YK. Although the last war is over, the 13 “civilized” regions of Khorvaire are still in flux and each is vying for an advantage over it's neighbors and the great dragon-marked houses are each trying to gain economic control. In addition with the opening of the planes for travel there has been a great upsurge in interest in ancient artifacts form civilizations gone by. This is where the players come in, they have been hired as special forces for a expedition to Xen'drik. Although the main goal is to find a way gate to another plane that they can sell the location of, the company that hired you is also interested in any knowledge and artifacts. The boats leave in the morning.

The game will run at 11pm UCT on Sunday, starting next week most likely. Unless that works absolutely rubbish for everybody, then I will find a better time.

Starting level: 6
Point buy: 32
Starting wealth: 13000 and you start with identification papers, traveling papers, and letters of marque.
Hit points: Max at first, average thereafter.
Books you may use: You may use the players hand book and the SRD(Not the variant rules), I also have:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We will also be using action points.

On Action Points

You may spend one action point to improve the result of one d20 roll. You roll 1d6 and add that to the result of your d20. You must do it before I say what happens because of the roll. You may also spend 2 action points to gain another use of: Bardic music, rage, smite evil, turn undead, or wild shape. You may also spend one action point to stabilize if you are dieing.

You can use stuff from those books but you have to ask me, I also have unearthed arcana which I will look and see but I don't think we will be using much. If you want something from a book I do not have ask me and PM me it and I will tell you if it is okay.

Back story: The campaign starts in Sharn in the kingdom of Breland, you know the other players, other then those two restriction feel free to make what ever kind of back story you want.

I will accept five players based on party balance, flavor, and fun.

Any questions? I know I missed something.

The heros:

Glacius, the Half-Dragon Half-Human Sorcerer

Ulf Bjornson, Human Barbarian

Arman Woyan The Wise, Human Cleric/Fighter.

Rorakar the Hunter, Grippli Ranger

Sergeant Merrian Skye, Human Bard/Rogue/Fighter

14
So I have decided to start up my own game, learning from my last mistake I will have a concrete rule set and a idea of what I am doing. This game will be based upon the comic "ErfWorld" Specifically each player will be a royal kingdom and they will do what the kingdoms in the comic do, namely try to take over the world and keep their power! I made this thread quite a bit earlier than I am ready to start because I wanted a better place than just a word doc to put the rules. I also wanted feedback from future players and to gauge interest.

So will out further adue I will start translating the comic into rules! (Using the wiki of course.)

It is going to be quite rough for a while, feel free to ask questions. Better now than when the game starts!

I will be accepting five players, the first four slots will go first come first serve and the last is for Cheddarius if he wishes it for "services rendered" if he does not then it will go to first come first serve.

One more note before I forget, you do not build anything but units for fighting, everything else you must take.
