I am continually amazed that this thread is still alive 13 years later.

DF General Discussion / Re: When did you start playing Dwarf Fortress?

Somewhere between 2006/2007, so pretty early adopter.  I remember when the big things were yearly flooding, collapsing ceilings for digging out an area larger than 7x7 - 1, ambushes jumping out of wells, filling the chasm with magma and feeling pretty damn lucky if you found a vein of iron before you reached said chasm.

The DF we have today is a much different game.

DF General Discussion / Re: Stagnant? Doomed? Whose idea?

eh, honestly these posts are nothing new.  I've been playing for about 7 years now and actively posting for 6 and they always crop up and it's the same 3 arguments everytime.  FPS, Graphics, and UI.  I don't understand the why though, if they're shilling for other games, it's not like there's anything really in competition with DF.  I think more than likely it's, and I really hate saying this cause it's so often overused, an issue with entitlement.  People want what they want and they want it now, and when they can't have what they want right now, they tend to create justifications for why it should be otherwise the sky will fall.  I blame the microwave.

I'm a 10 year veteran of DF and I approve these comments.  Toady is happily making the sort of game he loves making.  He's engaged with the community and manages to stay sane.  And despite any nay-saying about the bad UI or graphics or feature creep or whatever, his formula is working.  He's somehow making a living by providing DF for free, which honestly is the real magic here.

Those types of comments are as old as the community.

I'll recommend Dark City.  It's an oddball sci-fi flick that definitely falls into that esoteric cateory.

And I'll third anything by Terry Gilliam.  Time Bandits, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Adventures of Baron Von Munchhausen...

Back in 2006, via the now defunct CorpNews.com forum, which was a diaspora site from the old LumTheMad forums.  Somebody posted up a link to the, then still active (iirc, though I might be mistaken), Boatmurdered thread.

Maniac Fortress

Done in the style of Maniac Mansion.  You play Urist, just a regular miner going about your daily life in a new mountain home.  Various puzzles allows you access to deeper and deeper parts of the fortress until, eventually, you break through into [REDACTED] and unleash [REDACTED].  Thereupon, your task is to make your way from [REDACTED] up to the entrance of the Fortress whereupon you are able to escape.  Along the way you encounter amusing carvings of cheese, circles, and oddly placed ampersands.  One puzzle involves magma, pressure plates and an enraged elephant.

Most of the elves in the world that I'm running are cannibals.  Admittedly, they're demon-worshiping savages who wouldn't think twice about eating one another should the opportunity present itself, but they were inspired by DF.

We already know Caliborn has been haunted by the ghost of John.  It's double-meta foreshadowing.

Seems like it's setting up for a massive alchemy, doesn't it?  Cueball-eyed Jack, Felt-boss Spades, Soul-destroyer Dirk, then... cherubic Caliborn?  ... Or, oh gosh, alt-Calliope.

Bec Noir.  And I'll bet this was all arranged by the Condesce, not LE.  Too many moving parts for LE's smash-and-grab approach.

I recently made a couple of VB programs that would randomly generate a world history and a pantheon.  I cribbed a couple of pages from the 2E D&D World Builder's Guidebook for the tables.  In essence, after I found a decent random number generator, I just made a handful of Select Case look-up lists, generated the number of traits I wanted and ran a number of loops to generate the details.  it's more or less what you're doing here.  I can put up the code when I'm back at my computer, if you'd like, though it is in VB and not Python...
