DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Finding rivers
« on: March 10, 2024, 03:41:35 am »
There does not seem to be a way to filter out streams and brooks in the site finder in 50.12 version. I'm trying to embark on a major river with iron and flux, and the results are quite numerous since the game includes all streams and maybe brooks too.

Also, is there a way to help world gen generate more major rivers?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My map is broken, maybe?
« on: August 14, 2023, 07:06:33 pm »
Look at this:

Both the blue area and the black area (green on minimap) are inaccessible at any Z-level. Well, I haven't gone down to Magma Sea yet but I doubt it would change things. On the world map, before embarking, there was nothing strange or unusual about this area. I've never seen this before. There's a similarly inaccessible rectangle on the north-east corner of the map too. Caravans and migrants do arrive normally.

I'm leaning towards abandoning this fortress just to be safe.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Struggling with undead invaders
« on: February 02, 2022, 11:22:52 pm »
So my fort had 3 military squads and thus 30 warriors. One was armed with spears, one with axes and one with hammers. All iron equipment, mostly good quality but not masterworks. The hammer squad wasn't trained very well but the other two were. I got invaded by about 60 undead, with roughly 50 walking corpses and 10 intelligent undead leading them. All in a mix of iron, bronze and copper equipment.

I figured that this should be a relatively even fight as the invaders were strung out in a stretched column from map edge to my drawbridge, so I gathered my dwarfs at the entrance, lowered the drawbridge and sent them out to kill.

Imagine my shock when ALL of my military dwarves got slaughtered and only little under 20 undead were killed. As far as I can tell, my dwarves didn't get swarmed and it was the intelligent undead that proved to be my undoing - one of them was fighting three of my dwarves and he slew all of them.

Is it because undead feel no pain and suffer no blood loss? Should I have re-trained my military as 30 hammer users? Should I have waited until I have steel and adamantium gear? Or are undead better dealt with traps instead of a straight-up fight?

Just as background info, these three squads have killed cyclops and giants with zero problems, as well as fought off a goblin invasion (3:1 odds) with only like two casualties. Which is why the undead prowess in battle really took me by surprise.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fort keeps hanging up
« on: November 19, 2021, 11:59:40 pm »
I'm not using any mods. I disabled tilesets and the crash/hang-up still keeps happening. I don't know what causes it exactly because there are no announcements or anything. There's an elven caravan in the trade depot that I successfully traded with. There's nothing special going on in-game but the game gets stuck and eventually I have to use Task Manager to close DF. I haven't done any raiding, there have been no vampire/werebeast attacks, no sieges, no necromancers.

I've attached my save game in case someone could take a look and find out what's going wrong: (warning it's 97 MB)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Archery towers - now useless?
« on: October 29, 2021, 09:17:39 am »
In multiple forts I've now had the problem where the marksdwarves dodge through the fortification in front of them and end up falling out of the archery tower to their deaths. At first I thought the problem was that I had carved entire segments of walls into fortifications but the problem persists even if there's only 2 out of the 14 possible wall tiles. Then I experimented and even if there's only 1 open tile, one marksdwarf after another will dodge through that single open tile and fall into the throng of goblins outside.

So, it seems to me that archery towers are now completely useless if the enemy has any ranged units and every siege has them. I guess archery tower might be useful against necromancers and beasts still but this is very disheartening. Are there some funky layout tricks I can use to eliminate this or should I just focus on traps and melee instead?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Clean up on aisle... ocean?
« on: July 10, 2021, 02:39:49 am »
During the construction of my naval fort hovering above the ocean, several dwarves lost their lives (and belongings) via falling down into the ocean. Unfortunately, the sea is only one Z level deep around my fort so it's super annoying having to see their corpses plus the other items, seemingly permanently stuck there in the water.

Is there a dfhack script or command that I can use to remove them completely or at least transport them to dry land so I can deal with it? I want my sea to be clean!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military furniture
« on: May 21, 2021, 05:16:40 am »
Does a military squad need as many weapon racks and armor stands as it has members?

Do military dwarves need personal bedrooms if they are sleeping in the barracks? Conversely, do they need beds in the barracks if they have bedrooms already?

Does every Marksdwarf in the squad require their own archery target?

I assigned my Sharpshooter squad to train 5 at a minimum, every month, in the hope that the 5 not training melee would on their own train archery but they didn't do that. Do I need to have all 10 training for one month, then the whole squad without orders the next month? Wiki talks of inactivity but if I set the squad Inactive in the Alerts window, they only do their civilian jobs.

And finally, is there a minimum space required in the barracks for sparring?

DF General Discussion / What is wrong with my world?
« on: May 09, 2021, 11:54:36 am »

All that yellow-brown-red on the edges is supposed to be water. I don't have any tilesets installed. During world generation, the oceans start out blue but transform into these ugly colours when caves are being placed. It doesn't affect gameplay and after embark, water shows blue - except on the Civilizations/News/World screen where they are the same ugly colour. Fresh install of 44.05.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Growing fort area?
« on: May 07, 2021, 09:27:21 am »
I started with a 4x4 area when I meant to do a 6x6 area. Somehow, I didn't realize until now, about ten years into the fort. Everything is going really well so I don't want to abandon this fort. Is there any tricks for enlargement of my fort area?

Also, I insulted the elven caravan by offering them a wooden item by mistake. I'm not at war with them so will the caravan eventually return? I want to buy their giant grizzly bears!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Black bears as a trap component?
« on: June 29, 2020, 11:06:48 am »
I know I cannot train black bears for war but since I have a breeding pair, I was thinking of putting them in a pasture next to my entrance, covered by a drawbridge and once enemies are walking past, unleash the bears on them. Will that work or will the bears try to flee from goblins and trolls and so on?

DF Gameplay Questions / Ocean Embark and Whale Hunting
« on: May 19, 2018, 07:32:45 pm »
I'm planning a challenge fort with the main aim of accomplishing whale/shark/serpent/sea monster hunting, something that I've never done before. I know about biomes and surroundings, but what I would like to know is how to maximize the chances of such massive aquatic creatures spawning in my corner of the map. Is it better to have 1 tile of land and rest ocean or will that just kill my FPS? Is 1 tile of ocean enough to spawn every type of creature allowed by that biome?

Are there any other hints & tips you'd like to share?
