Forum Games and Roleplaying / SUPERSPAMDORF (spring break, 2023)
« on: February 01, 2023, 09:32:58 am »
You are me.
As in, the actual, IRL me. Superdorf. The dude typing this. Hi!

You're a second-year college kid going on 21, in the classics program of a small Christian institution. You're hoping to become a priest someday, but for now you're just riding out the storm that is undergrad-level classwork. Your attention span for assignments isn't great, which makes everything harder than it should be - still, it's a good school. You like it here.

You goof off a lot. Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, YouTube, whatever. It's not the healthiest habit, and you've been putting off a bunch of pursuits you think would make your life better. Art, gym, guitar practice, that sort of thing. All kinda stagnant at the moment. You'd like to change that.

You had a very silly idea last night. This is that idea.

You are me. Or rather, you're a voice in my head! You're gonna help me make small life decisions, forum game style, and I'm gonna keep a small diary going here with updates, forum game style. Until I drop the idea, anyway. This thread might last years, or it might die in a week. I dunno yet.

(Keep in mind, this is my actual life we're talking about! I get final say on everything :) )

What will I call this rather weird experiment?
A) SPAMCOLLEGE
B) SLICE OF SPAM
C) Write-in (subject to my approval)
D) The current title is fine actually

Will I refer to myself in the first or second person?
A) First person
B) Second person
C) Eh, play it by ear

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pump stack lag
« on: December 18, 2022, 02:34:07 am »
Finished up a 100 z-level pump stack today, using a design from this thread with 1x3 reservoirs... the system reliably drops my FPS from 80+ to 4 or lower.
I could swear I was able to get a reasonably speedy pump stack going on my old laptop, using this design. Did I do something wrong, or are pump stacks really just that laggy? :-\

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Show me your cool central rampway designs
« on: December 12, 2022, 11:13:45 pm »
I'm hoping to pick up DF Steam sometime in the coming weeks, and I want to do some cool things with fortress architecture once I have the new version. One of the ways I want to push my architecture is by doing away with the 3x3 central staircase that my fortress designs are typically planned around. However, I want to keep the efficient motion that a central staircase provides... so, ramps! I'm looking for a good-looking rampway design that doesn't take significantly longer for my dwarves to navigate than a staircase would. Anyone here have some ideas for me?

Mafia / Vengeful Mafia 14 - End: Death to the colony (scum win)
« on: February 18, 2021, 04:32:03 pm »
Thanks to 4maskwolf for the OP structure!

Welcome to Vengeful Mafia 14. This is a 5 player, nightless variant; the roles consist of 3 town, and two mafia, one of whom is a flagbearer.

Vengeful Mafia is named for its distinctive mechanic, the vengekill! If a town player is lynched on Day 1, they get to use a kill action on one other player. If they kill a fellow townie, the mafia win. If they kill a mafia player, the game continues into Day 2.

The town win by eliminating both mafia players, but if they lynch the flagbearer, they win immediately.

The mafia win if they equal or outnumber the town, and the town have no vengekill remaining.

Rules

Days will last 72 hours; no extensions will be allowed. Weekends will count half-time.

Hammers are in effect! The day will end immediately if any player receives half the total votes, plus 1, rounded down. The thread is considered to be locked immediately after the casting of the hammervote, and should not be posted in until the next Day.

I'll be seeing personally to each Day's end, so I can toss up the game flavor and such-- send your vengekill choice by PM, please.

To avoid a deadlock, any tied lynch votes at a deadline will result in the the mafia team choosing who gets to be lynched in their quicktopic.

Mafia players will have a dedicated quicktopic to discuss their nefarious plans away from prying eyes.

Signup preference will be given to those not currently alive in an ongoing game.  All signups by those in an active game will be entered, space permitting, 24 hours after signups open.

  • TricMagic

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You Are A Man With The Head Of A Fish [SG]
« on: August 11, 2020, 10:41:09 pm »
Beep. Beep. Beep.

Consciousness comes slowly to you, with a nasty headache. Glaring, white light beats on your eyes, slowly coming into focus: a hospital room, strangely distorted to your vision. Empty, but for yourself and the implements of modern medicine. You cast your eyes about the room, noting at a glance the white plaster and the beeping monitor and the stainless-steel faucet and the--

...you can see so much at once.

You try to blin--
--you don't have eyelids.

Panicking, you wheeze through too-wide nostrils as your mouth flaps and gapes. You suck frantically through your neck (your neck?) at the sterile hospital air. Your left eye falls blearily on a convenient wall-mirror-- a dreadful, an unbelievable truth emerges--

You are a man with the head of a fish.
You're pretty sure you weren't a man with the head of a fish last Wednesday.

What on earth are you going to do?

Mafia / Not-So-Beginner Mafia 6! [Day 4]
« on: October 07, 2019, 04:46:47 pm »
XCOM headquarters lay in ruins.

The attack had come without warning, an alien battleship breaking orbit and flying straight towards the top-secret site.  Fighters were scrambled to meet it, but it was already too late.  Under intense fire from interceptors and ground-based defenses, the battleship dropped off hundreds of soldiers: sectoids, thin men, mutons, even the dreaded cryssalids and cyberdisks.  As it finally fell from the sky a burning husk, it gave one last act of defiance, its main guns carving a hole in the mountainside: a path straight into XCOM HQ.

Casualties were high, but contingencies were executed to the letter.  Key personnel and equipment were evacuated from the moment the battleship broke orbit, while soldiers and base security held the line in a fighting retreat.  As air support from nearby air bases arrived, air superiority was regained and the evacuation began in earnest.  While the base was lost, much of XCOMs equipment and personnel was saved, relocated through several US military bases before finally making their way to a backup site, far from prying eyes.

Now begins the process of rebuilding, recruiting, and most importantly, finding out how, exactly, the aliens knew exactly where to strike.

Though no public announcement was made, orders were passed down the chain of command to nine soldiers: Central Officer Bradford wished to speak with them for debriefing following the attack.  Provided with the orders were directions to his new office, in a far-flung wing of the new XCOM headquarters.  One by one, the soldiers made their way there, forming a quiet queue outside the closed office.  As time wore on, small talk started up among those waiting, and it came out that all nine were supposedly scheduled for their meeting at the exact same time.  Growing suspicious, one of the them knocked on the door to the office.  A few minutes and no response later, they grew bold enough to open the door and invite themselves in.

Central was not inside.  Instead, there was an empty desk with a memo detailing their situation.  They were all suspects in an ongoing investigation into the attacks on XCOM HQ, and would be isolated from the rest of the base and cut off from communications until the investigation had completed.  In the meantime, they should take note of any suspicious behavior they believe would aid in the investigation.

The first day of lockdown has begun.

The game has begun! It is now Day.

The year is 125, and the depredations of tooth and blade have worn hard on the Mechanism of Deciding, a burgeoning dwarfish civilization in the west of the world. Merely 250 in number, its people face a rapidly growing goblin horde over 1000 strong. The two civilizations maintain a tremulous peace for the time being, but peace never lasts long between dwarf and goblin... and the dwarves cannot survive much more loss.

Sooo... I'm gonna step in with a Founding Seven! Our plan? Build an impregnable bastion of dwarven power... right under the noses of our enemies.

We'll draw their fire, beat 'em back, and set out with indomitable military force once the gobboes are thinned out a bit! Foolproof, yes? Probably not. But let's give it a shot anyway!

Our starting locale is depressingly short of metals, but we've got sand, clay, flux, and lots-n'-lots of wood. We'll buy metalwork off the caravans, use that to beat back the first invasions... then tap the bowels of the earth to pump liquid fire into the lung cavities of our enemies.

Right then!

..and mash the randomizer a few times for a name!

Hm. Grim. Almost comically so. Nice and dwarfy too.
Spoiler: It's perfect. (click to show/hide)
