Brutal, but zombie hydra is pretty metal.

Try a reclaim and mad scramble to wall in, or just press F and move on?

...anything I can do to improve their moods?

What's frustrating is there's no direct way to wipe negative thoughts, but you can keep stacking on different positive thoughts to try to tilt the scale. Get a generic temple up now, and follow up with individual temples for every deity worshipped by any dwarf for those who are picky. Get a statue garden set up, and include some traps, furniture and a cage within the zone for that "admired tastefully arranged X" thought. Legendary dining rooms are easy enough to set up since they're communal, so you just need a big room, valuable furniture and smooth and engrave the walls and floor. A central waterfall is nice too, but difficult to set up unless you have an aquifer to pull from. If the bedrooms are nice you might have already done this, but get one of (almost) everything in each room, so one weapon rack, armor stand, cabinet, chest, etc, so they can admire different things.

Also, with so few dwarves I would micromanage to make sure they each do a crafting job once every season, to get that happy thought and avoid the negatives from no craft or nothing creative.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What are the benefits of leather armor?
« on: April 24, 2024, 08:23:09 pm »
My unscientific impression is it does something against weaker opponents, I'm just not sure how much. Also keep in mind you can assign it over a metal mail shirt without adding much weight, which again should do something but I'm not sure how much.

What I actually use it for most is in uniforms for my "civilian" military squads. Everyone except miners/woodcutters/hunters gets a squad, just to get them to carry a shield and axe. Then over time I add leather armor, bone greaves, a silk robe and a metal helmet without slowing them too much. But you don't want even the "speedy" metal uniform (i.e. mail but no breastplate) on, say, your stone haulers, the total weight seems to slow them. (Also unscientific impression from fortress play not arena, but I'm pretty sure of this one.)

Possibly I should push harder for bone breastplates instead? Wiki calls leather and bone "roughly equivalent," but it wouldn't be the first time the wiki has been technically accurate but misleading without context.

Yes, the brothers' need for money is totally legit and I can't blame them for needing a larger pool of buyers.
It's just sad for those older fans like us that get left behind.

World is ruled by money.
...

When its compensation for labor, I expect everyone to go where the money is, including Toady. I even want him to; I want him to have a comfortable life and keep coding, not have to choose between a day job and coding under an overpass.

I just can't follow him there to 50+. Ingrained habit certainly is part of that, but not all of it. The Steam UI is not all that great in a positive sense, even without comparing it to legacy. It is mouse capable, so mission accomplished, but its not elegant mouse capable, for reasons already pointed out.

Separately, and speaking of money, I would pay or donate $20 for a bug fix only pass of 47.05, with no added functions and no change to UI.

I neither expect that, nor am I owed it. In the abstract I even want him to deliver value for his Steam purchasers before he takes on any other missions - but again, I can't follow him there.

Something must have happened off-map, as a young dwarf who wasn't before is now King Consort. His Wife isn't in the fort (and never was); his Lover is, which is awkward, but oh well. I don't usually chase getting the Monarch, but I think I will now, and see how it goes. If I can do it quick enough I'll get her retinue in before the population cap, but we'll see.

New UI is shit.

Yes.

47.05 remains fully playable though.

The dwarfess Ushat Channeledsaint dehydrated to death. Thought she was recovered from injuries after being kicked out of the hospital, but was evidently too slow in crutch-walking to the booze.

Her husband Litast Zonbekom, unskilled as a metalsmith but fond of brass, crafted a brass statue in her honor. I didn't commission the image, just took what the hisfig generation gave me. I got a "crafted a masterpiece ☼brass statue of Ushat Channeledsaint☼ message and started to be impressed. Checked the description, it was commemorating her marriage... now I'm even more impressed, until I finished reading... her marriage to some other dude I'd never heard of, some Vabok Worthtorches.

So close, Litast, yet so far away. Let it go.

I am playing 47.05 and have not encountered this.

Random questions: any mods? Any utilities running? Any problems with corrupted saves? Any burrows active? Do the stuck dwarves show as Idle, or still performing the job?

Getting dwarfs to do specific tasks

It sounds like this is worse in Steam than it is in older versions. Not that older versions were exactly direct, but there were routes to brute force a particular task to completion faster than you describe.

Ideally this means there's a route to improving the Steam version. Although I note that some of the current issues are tied up with changes to to the jobs/labor system. My vote would be to restore the old functionality around jobs instead of roles, but there may be a third route I'm not aware of. Also, full disclosure, I'm actually still playing 47.05 in ascii after only a very brief try of Steam, so I'm possibly no longer the target demographic.

Prioritizing construction

Yeah, you really should be able to use the 1-7 priority scale for construction the way you can for designating mining, plant gathering and other tasks. This seems like a straightforward, high return quality-of-life improvement to make to the game.

In the meantime you should be able to get a weak effect by keeping non-urgent other jobs at 5-7, but that still runs up against workshop tasks.

Station and Build orders should disregard enemies

No, and even hell no. As a personal preference it's defensible and coherent, but it's not the universal value you make it out to be.

A midpoint compromise though would be to let a player in Fortress Mode take control of one dwarf at a time. Then you could drive that one around to pull levers, pick up socks, build walls in the face of invasion, etc. Between Fortress and Adventure mode it seems like the tools are all there, but possibly the architecture isn't.

I refused to use Therapist and I had a bad time

Yeah, that'll happen. Therapist is easy to install, intuitive to use, and the gains are all from time/efficiency not from hacks, cheats or edits. And it's been around long enough it might even be at least an allowed-for part of the play experience, if not originally intended.

DF General Discussion / Re: What do you think about my bedroom grid?
« on: February 12, 2024, 07:46:19 am »
I like putting the bed in the center of a 3x3 room so dwarfs going straight to it still see get a good thought from any other owned furniture I've placed in the bedroom. If the bed is in a corner they may not interact with a coffer or statue on the other side.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't chain a wild boar sow
« on: February 11, 2024, 09:37:19 pm »
Tame it first, while it's still in the cage. [Z, Animals, scroll down to highlight and hit T.] Then you can chain it, or skip the chain and pasture it.

Also, this happens every so often, nobody will perform x task. What is going on?

So many possibilities. Do any dwarves have the relevant labor enabled, if they do are they actually idle or tied up with other jobs, hit "o" to check orders and see if the action is enabled, including under Refuse or Workshop orders submenus, are you getting "job canceled" announcements or is it just never starting, can they path to the job in the first place...  Many possibilities, not enough info.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Demon resident. Cloth size?
« on: February 11, 2024, 09:35:41 pm »
Check your existing size options, you might just get lucky. My current fort in 47.05 lists several "demons of X" and "soldiers/warriors of Y" under the size options for clothing and armor.

A necromancer siege killed only 3 dorfs before someone pulled the drawbridge lever; pretty good!

Having no good plan for fighting them I stayed turtled for a while and just played normally. Sometime I wasn't watching, the Necromancers either perished or wandered off the map, leaving 20 gaunt ghouls who turned Friendly. Drawbridge down it seems real, they're just hanging out in a field of teeth on the edge of the map as my dorfs venture out. I'm curious to see what happens when a caravan or another siege arrives, so I'm not going to provoke them.

Make sure the statue is somewhere they have to path past it. I don't know why the door isn't triggering.

The other thing going on is you should be getting happy thoughts from "dining in a legendary dining room" or similar.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Hosting A Secession Game
« on: October 08, 2023, 03:36:29 pm »
I think here's still active enough, it's just the Steam release split the community activity somewhat. Definitely post here in Community Games & Stories if you're thinking of a 47.05 succession game, and both places for a Steam version.

For advertising it, best practice is to put your version number in brackets at the end of the thread title, and tell us anything unique about the world or play rules up front in the first post. Even if its how you want to play the game (and not all do), save lengthy in character posts for after you've gotten to the point. Optionally, make a placeholder second post to edit with open/not open and wait time information for new players later.

Be prepared to start with a modest number of serious players committed. I saw one after the fact that went nowhere because the OP wanted moar still, but he'd have had enough for at least a month, and I'd have joined late once I found it.
