Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Grimoire of MAGIC SCIENCE
« on: July 03, 2013, 06:10:04 pm »
Welp, I've got some time again, so once more into the breach! Maybe this'll fare a bit better than my last two poorly planned attempts.  :P There's going to be plenty of mechanics going on behind the scenes here, but that can mostly be disregarded at first... In fact, you don't have much other choice seeing as I'm not telling, muahahahahaha!

Haha, it's done! It's finally done! It's taken me years of saving, more than one pile of gold in bribes, and a bit more begging than I'd like to admit, but it's done! Cauldron, check. Supplies of test materials, check. Plenty of crystallized mana, check. Wand that does nothing but looks cool and magical anyway, check. The laboratory is stocked and ready, the only thing missing now is... er... Well, any sort of notes about how this magic stuff works. Of any kind. Stupid wizards and their stupid not sharing and saying I'd be a terrible apprentice...

So, I suppose step one is to begin the writing of my very own Grimoire.

Journal Day 0:
The blocks of soil stretch out as far as the eye can see in every direction, even from the top of a nearby tree I climbed to look around. No signs of habitation, no hint of how I got here. Memory isn't much help either, as this empty world is all I can remember. Well, that, and how to build myself some basic tools and shelter. Why do I know that? Doesn't seem like it matters too much. So, I'm all alone here, with nothing but some (surprisingly tame) pigs and sheep for company.

...But you are this neat magic amulet of wisdom one found! Maybe this one will survive a little longer than the last five. (Look, how were you supposed to know that spider demons don't prefer flies to adventurers? It was an honest mistake! Freaking fragile humans.)

...There's been some nasty rumors flying around that you're actually a cursed amulet of wisdom, but you're pretty sure the people spreading those are just jealous. And jerks. And their mothers didn't love them. So! Let's see what poor sod picked up the amulet this time...

Roll To Dodge / Roll to take over the world(Turn 9: Stop rolling so well!)
« on: September 01, 2012, 12:43:00 am »
Saving the world? Adventuring parties? SANITY?! All for chumps! No, the real heroes of this story are those geniuses, powerhouses, and all around monsters that want to see it all bow before them. The only question is, which one will actually succeed first? Or, ya know, win by default when there's no one else left. Either way!

So yeah, RTD with a slightly different bent than most. No working together, (probably) no saving people, no heroic quests. Just a group of evil masterminds, their minions, and their plots for world domination. And just to make things a bit more confusing, the world is... Well, an Anachronism Stew. For the most part things are your usual medieval fantasy. But some villains have uncovered technology far beyond their time, dug up monsters man was not meant to see, and all kinds of other stuff!

Character sheet: (Keep track of this and your stuff in your own posts! I was clearly insane trying to do it all myself in Elemental RTD...)

So, I've been thinking over various ways of implementing magic in games and stories, ways of making concrete rules for it that still don't limit the endless possibilities too much, and maybe even keep some of the mystery. And, well, I've hit a slight snag. Namely, it's hard to test these ideas. I'd need some kind of list of example effects, as comprehensive and weird as possible. So, I've come here! Be it animating the undead, enchanting a blade, or shapehifting, I'd like examples of some of the strangest and coolest spells and rituals people can think of.

I'd throw up some quick rundowns of the implementations I've come up with so far (And on that note, any others people have encountered/created would be awesome as well!) but, well, it's 4 AM. I'll just have to post that when I'm a bit more... conscious.  :-X

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The world of the Paradigm
« on: June 02, 2012, 06:43:08 pm »
For the most part, this world is normal enough. At a glance, it is reminiscent of Earth's Medieval ages. Not just Medieval Europe I mean, it's not some kind of weird homogeneous world. You've got your kings and kingdoms, but there are also feudal shoguns, shapeshifting tribal shamans... and... magitech empires... Ok, so maybe it isn't that similar. Not past the surface anyway. It's history is riddled with wars unlike any we have ever seen, clashes of ideology on a scale technology cannot hope to match. For while the common folk are little different from our own, this is a world of larger than life heroes, wielding  and being wielded by forces not even they truly understand.

The powers of a hero are not worldshaking though, not in all but the rarest of situations. They are powerful, they are driven(usually), and they bend history around themselves. But all this is not a matter of simple strength. A hero's true might is the way in which their every action shifts the tides of a war they cannot even see, all of humanity caught in the ebb and flow of the Paradigms. For heroes here do not have ideals. They ARE ideals. And when two heroes clash, the loser's ideal is weakened. When a hero kills a villain(Which is, in the end, just another sort of hero), deep beneath the ground before his plans have even begun to move, the world becomes just a little bit brighter... even if no one ever finds out. It is these ideals, these Paradigms that give rise to the different cultures of the world. The paradigms of The King, The Teacher, The Engineer, The Mage. The dominant Paradigm of the area is powerful beyond belief, technologies and magics simply ceasing to work in lands where they hold little sway.

So, hero. Where are you from? What Paradigm do YOU follow? Who are you, and what do you seek for the world?

Other Games / New Tabletop RPG: Legend
« on: November 27, 2011, 03:53:03 pm »
So, there's a new d20 RPG system out, and completely free too. It's a bit sparse on setting details are the moment (that's being left for a different book), but the mechanics are top notch and shockingly well balanced. Since I'm rather poor at giving details, I shall instead give a few examples of equally powerful characters I've seen made with it:
1. A drunken dwarf engineer, riding about on a robotic dragon and with the power to heal himself through the healing spirits of spirits.
2. A human shaman who fires spells out of a magic gun and can teleport around if things get too close.
3. An evil genius who can fling endless masses of disposable and competent minions at any problem. (that one's a bit higher level than the other two)

Oh, and while it is free, there's a donation box as well: All proceeds go straight to Child's Play.

Edit: Whoops, wrong page linked. http://www.ruleofcool.com/?page_id=49
There. Much more direct.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Godhood: A New Land(IC)
« on: November 03, 2011, 07:46:29 pm »
In the vastness of the multiverse, the creation of a new world is no large event. Millions are born and die every day(if such a measure has any meaning for a place in which not even time is a constant), leaving nothing but a small ripple of causality in their wake. But as common as they may be, new universes and worlds are always something special, with no two quite the same. Some lack gods entirely. Others possess nothing but. This particular universe came into being partially formed, a mass of raw potential making up it's one planet. It possessed civilization... of a sort. As well as a number of sentient creatures... of a kind. The details were fuzzy, awaiting something to define them by their mere presence.

And so this world waited, a blank slate to be sculpted unconsciously by the first mind to touch it. For eons it sat, locked in stagnation by it's lack of definition. Until finally a mind appeared. And another. And another, until eight gods awoke around the planet as one. Instantly, the world took on a true form, defined by it's gods(and moments after the first definition, by a few heroes) in a moment. Fantastic and mundane beasts took shape and began to develop, civilizations gained the definition needed to grow, and an entire history was written to fit. And so, another playground of gods was formed, it's gods still young and at the height of their power...

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Godhood: A New Land(OOC)
« on: November 02, 2011, 05:28:04 pm »
Well, I might be insane for trying this, but here goes nothing: New Godhood! Same rules as the last one (here, for those who haven't played before), with a couple minor/major changes:

1. I'll be taking three types of players:
Gods: Pretty simple. Play a god, using Acts to change the world. No different from the past games. I'll take up to 8.
Heroes: Smaller-scale than gods, but more direct. Heroes have "Heroics" instead of Acts, but beyond that the gameplay is similar. Spend Heroics to pull off otherwise impossible stunts, and shape the world on a smaller scale than gods. Heroes are mortal, but heroism is a universal constant: If a hero is to die, be it of old age or in combat, the player may then play on as the hero's next incarnation, or perhaps even the same hero reborn, memories and all(though that requires a bit of divine help). I'll take up to 5.
Co-GMs: While I'm pretty confident in my ability to keep the game organized/running as long as player interest remains(Though there might be the occasional hiatus due to school), I'm not much of a writer. I can plan events, keep things running, all that... but if anyone wants the awesome end-of-turn posts the last games had, I'll need some help. No NEED for one of these, but it would be nice to split up the work a bit. And would lead to more awesome narration.

2. Gods receive 5 starting acts, and 3 starting spheres. (one major sphere, two minor ones). Heroes meanwhile get 5 starting Heroics, and 3 specializations(Pretty much the same as spheres, just smaller scale. "fighting", "acrobatics", or "diplomacy" would count for example.)

3. The world is a bit more advanced this time around. This universe's overgod waited until mankind reached something resembling our middle ages before creating the other gods. On the first turn, each god gets to define a single fantastic creature or race that is part of the world, while the heroes may each define the nation their hero is from. (New nations/creatures may be formed after this. But that will take time and Acts. This is just to let everyone work together to give a quick sketch of what the world is like.)

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Quest
« on: October 02, 2011, 01:14:10 am »
((Well, after my poorly thought-out idea of starting an RTD on the first week of classes went about as could be expected, I finally have some free time again. So, time for something different:))

Infinite power is something most people cannot even imagine. And you held it in the palm of your hand. You were, for a single moment, greater than even a god. You could have made and unmade entire planes of existence with nothing but a thought... but the instant ended. The power vanished. And with it went your memories of your past, driven out by the overwhelming force of that one moment.

The taste of power still fresh in your nearly empty mind, you open your eyes to see nothing but endless white surrounding you, marred only by yourself and a stone table sitting a few feet in front of you, it's surface covered with what appears to be some sort of gamepieces. An entire world is drawn out on it's surface, the pieces atop it ranging from castles to forests, from peasants to knights, from dragons to wizards. You don't know what sort of rules this game might have. But you instinctively feel that it's your move.

Roll To Dodge / Dark lord RTD
« on: August 26, 2011, 04:43:20 pm »
Hmm... I think it's time I make another of these. Slightly more complicated rules than usual though! Essentially, while success/failure is still determined by a simple die roll, skills and items do not give bonuses to that roll(Usually. Some things will give +1s, but never more than that. and even that is rare) Instead, skills give you extra abilities that can modify your roll in a number of ways. ie: Say you have the skill "Marksman". By mentioning you wish to use the skill in your post, you can take a -1 to your damage roll, in exchange for +1 to hit. (Items work similarly, though their effects MUST be applied when using them, instead of being optional)
Spoiler: couple other examples (click to show/hide)

Setup: You all are recent graduates of a prestigious academy. The place teaches everything from swordfighting to magic, and has turned out a number of successful graduates. Oh, and the faculty insists it's a coincidence that 90% of those graduates tried to take over the world. Your group in particular has received an old abandoned tower with minimal furnishings as a graduation gift. Clearly this has NO connections to world domination plans. Nope. None at all.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You are a Robot.
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:52:02 pm »
You are a robot. You are quite certain of this fact. One possessing two arms, a thick torso, a small array of sensors resembling a head, and a set of wheels for locomotion. You are also in a very small cardboard box full of packing peanuts, according to those sensors. Beyond this, you're a bit fuzzy on the details. Your memory seems to be entirely blank, nothing stored on your CPU or hard drive apart from your factory-default OS with a few minor chan-

...ok, that is not a minor change. A scheduled system scan just completed, and it seems to be marking every last bit of your code as heavily corrupted. That's probably what woke you up, as logs indicate you have been inactive for... ^*&gj$5d? Well that's not very helpful. And you're pretty certain your OS shouldn't be quite so huge now that you think about it... All you can remember is a single unmodified bit of default coding indicating your primary directive: Adapt to complete all given directives in the most efficient manner possible.

Other Games / Game Design
« on: July 26, 2011, 12:13:56 am »
I know there are a... rather surprising number of game developers on this board. So, what better place to ask for some advice about it? I'm hoping to go into game development after I'm out of college. But so far... well, I really don't know where to start. My classes are helpful and all, but they aren't hands-on enough(I know what a Game Design Document is for example... but couldn't BEGIN to write one). So in short: Any particular advice you all have on getting started? Ways to practice, resources, tutorials... anything would be helpful at this point really.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / An experiment
« on: June 03, 2011, 06:48:37 pm »
Hmm... I want to try a bit of an experiment here(two if you count "figure out how the polls on this forum work"). For SCIENCE reasons, I can't exactly tell you what I'm doing, so this'll be starting out a normal adventure. Except with a poll that might change at any time.

You are an adventurer in service of the queen of Tharia, the greatest kingdom in the land. Well, the greatest within reasonable traveling distance at least. Unfortunately, you're rather new at this, and so far your job description is essentially "glorified guard". That looks like it will be changing soon though, as you've just received clearance to explore an old ruin discovered deep underground by a coal mine. There's no record of the place, and most wouldn't dare enter without a bit more information... which is probably why you managed to get the job. instead of someone more experienced. Today's the day you set out on your first real adventure, so you'd better stock up, using what little gold you have. What to buy...?
