General Discussion / Computer Optimizations
« on: July 03, 2011, 10:20:59 pm »

 Oh what is this bullshit.

So after a while of using this computer and doing a decent job of trying to keep it working smoothly I took note of a growing amount of junk in various places I know was not there before. Probably just installers being irresponsible and automatic updates being dicks. I know all of this is less than a gig of space total but I really want this drive to be somewhat clean and free of bloat. What would you guys recommend for cleaning all this junk? And how much of this could I safely delete? I really shouldn't be poking around with some of these directories, so what can I safely mess with?

And because I know somebody will point out this would be better fit in the swirling Life Advice hellhole

So, what programs do you guys use to keep your computer somewhat clean? Virus scanners? Defraggers? System resource scanners? Uninstallers? Anything really. Trustworthy websites for technical advice for stuff like this is also appreciated.

Games is for my DOSBox junk to ease messing with the directories.

Creative Projects / Intentionally crappy forum romance fiction
« on: January 23, 2010, 12:01:20 am »
The damp night caused the rocks to become slippery and their clothes to cling to their skins, but the two figures huddling against the elements were determined to escape the pursuers by morning. It was only along the cliffs of their friends house that they could escape the law, who had snuck up on the house in the dead of night.
There had been a robbery. The only evidence that was found on the scene was a coat that was known to belong to NewMars. Fortunately, due to his friends he was able to receive word of this event before the cops were able to find him. He knew he didn't do it, but he had no alibi. There was nothing holding him from being accountable. He had to flee.
The barking of dogs signaled the couple on the cliffs that they had not yet escaped. NewMars took a bag from his companion to ease her load and tried to hurry her along. The waves of the sea beneath them saturated them and weighed them down, making the course increasingly difficult. If they were caught he would be hanged. Their only chance was to escape together.
Now the woman could vouch for him, but NewMars would not let her. They had spent the night in their passion, and because of that he would not let her alibi be used. For you see, Reasonableman was NewMarses best friend. And the womans husband.
After hours that seemed like days, one slip away from death after another and nothing but the drone of hounds growing as loud as the sea they finally stumbled upon a cave. It was half-submerged and the entrance would fill and empty with the small tides, a danger larger than that of the law following them. But they could not continue, so they braved the cave.
Wracked with cold and soaked through, they would surely die. But at least this way they would die wrapped in eachother, huddling for warmpth as the seas lapped at them.
Together NewMars and Little defied those that wished to drive them apart.

 BLEAUGH

I... I need to take a shower. I also take no responsibility for this. I have shows my ability to that which issued this dare, and now I shall be on my way. I hope the forum as a whole can ignore this topic and leave it to die in the pits of whatever damnation it belongs.

But yeah, intentionally crappy forum romance fictions. Share yours.

 Edit: Edited for obnoxiousness.

Play With Your Buddies / Duke Plays Games[OFFLINE]
« on: October 02, 2009, 07:43:28 pm »
Alright, now that several of these have lost their steam it is time for me to enter the fad. That's right folks, I'm livestreaming! Now for the specifications of this particular stream:

 1. Time. Most weekdays from 10 am - 2 pm GMT. I will likely skip many days due to college, but that should be my general available time. Note I might leave at a moments notice for something important, so if pestering the chat for five minutes results in nothing, that means I had to leave for something urgent enough that I could not stop the stream quickly enough to address it.

 2. Games. Damn near any SNES or PSX games you can think of. I have a friend who collected these things and is more than willing to let me use his PSX disks. I also have a list of choices which I don't think would work too well for this, such as TF2, Garrys Mod and Company of Heroes. Then there are the freeware games, which if you link me to them I'll try to play them. I might try some graphical roguelikes like Stone Soup, Powder or whatever you can get me a skin for.

 So yeah.

 ...

Screw it, I'm just playing whatever. Likely a Mystery Game every broadcast.

 Status: OFFLINE
 Link to the Stream

DF Modding / Adventurer modding assistance
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:52:19 pm »
Alright folks! Time to play "Watch what tags Duke did not add/remove to make these work!"

So I'm making a new creature I want to adventure with. I want it to have weapons, armor and skills. So, here is the creature and eneity-standard files for you to embarass me with.

Spoiler: CLASSIFIED (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Entity_Default (click to show/hide)

Also, these guys go everywhere. I just want them to appear near rivers and swamps and such. I figure it best to use human towns for this, but what stops me from using the Cave Detailed site on non-mountains? Or towers in plains?

General Discussion / Need a friendly arm?
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:53:22 pm »
Alright, before reading this thread read This.

 Holy Goddam.

Now note I did not check the sources of this and somebody very well could come and bite me in the ass for this, but Holy Goddam.

We can reattach limbs now. Alright, so there will be a year or so where your arms will feel like you've slept on them and likely not all dexterity will return, but Damn!

DF Suggestions / Burrows and pathfinding
« on: July 02, 2009, 11:17:34 pm »
Alright, so we know one of the greatest resource drains in DF is pathfinding. The method used simply floods the map, looking for a path to where one's job is. With the advent of burrows in the next version, many dwarves will basically be restricted to where they work, where they live and where they eat/drink. My suggestion is that if a job is located in the same burrow as the dwarf to take it, the pathfinding flood will not leave the burrow zone.

Now what if a job is outside the burrow? Then the system makes a simple check if the job is inside the burrow or not, and make the pathfinding adjustment then. What if one needs to travel outside the burrow to reach the job, such as a burrow split in half by a wall? Then if the pathfinding fails then it will start look outside the burrow for a path.

Basically, if one has a large forge burrow with various entrances to different parts of the fortress, dwarves will not look down these paths for a job the game knows is inside the burrow, and not down these halls.

General Discussion / Alright, roguelikes
« on: May 24, 2009, 09:56:10 pm »
A bit of backstory now: My home contains two computers for my use. One is super awesome supremeo, able to handle anything you throw at it for a good $400. Awesome. Next to that is an old, beat up junker of a laptop that crashes from overheating of so much as a Youtube video is played, and has more problems from Norton than any possible virus.

Sometimes my sister works on a Radio Play for a voice acting forum, so she needs to use the super computer. I like the fact that she has this project, because it reminds me to not be a lazy ass and do something. So, here I am with nothing to do. Then I download C-evo, and I find that this laptop can indeed run some programs without crashing the damn thing.

So here is my request: Roguelikes. These things don't take much power to run, so they should be perfect. My only problem is finding a good one. Please, just post whatever roguelike you like the most and why. I'll try to find that thing that so pleases you. I do have standards, however, which will help you understand what I look for in such a game:

It must include some method of learning the game. At the very least the basic commands. I don't want to be greeted with a list of actions including Speaking French, printer repair, dish washing and gazing menacingly if I have no clue why or how those commands are in there.

It needs a rather extensive level generation ability. By extensive, I mean beyond the very generation technique that Nethack made popular despite how boring it is. Unless there are alternate designs I have yet to gaze upon because of my suckage, nothing that copies Nethack in this way.

I know I'm looking at an ASCII game, but it needs to be pretty. DF is pretty. Many objects look like what they represent. Walls look like walls. #'s for walls are discouraged. I'm not totally opposed to them, but I can't really tolorate them after seeing the smoothed walls of DF.

A non-confusing inventory system. I'm lookin' at YOU, Incursion!

Not CPU intensive, like DF and possibly Elona can be.

So yes, let me see what you love about them roguelikes and a possibility to somebody with such strict criteria! I might just download Powder to this machine, as it just feels right to me as a roguelike.

DF Bug Reports / Reclaim Issue
« on: March 12, 2009, 11:26:12 pm »
Alright, so after working a while on Healedabby it came time for a reclaim. When I did, I noticed with glee that the tombs I sealed were the same black space as unmined rock. So I set up a band of grave-robbers for discovering the tomb.

Unfortunately, after removing the offending walls I noticed that the black space did not go away. Infact, designating it for mining resulted in the walls inside being designated for deconstruction, and the humans spamming messages about how they could not find a path.

I'll try to provide a screenshot, but there is a Titan there and reclaim parties are short-lived. Damn perfectly agile titan...

Still, should be easy enough to test. Make a room with a construction in it and seal it off completely with walls. Then reclaim and try to enter the black space inside.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF moments that you go "D'awwwwww"
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:43:00 pm »
Alright, so I'm working on Healedabby the human castle of awesomeness. Of course, despite me practically ignoring the civil aspects of the town in order to get the castle aspects completed I have to make infrastructure for the workers. And an army, because goblins can really stop the haulers from getting stone from the mines.

During one goblin ambush, my entire bowman unit was annihilated. I had to have a warrior-king leader take them out. Upon checking the deceased, I found one of the bowmen was a mother, and that she was carrying her baby boy when she rushed the goblins. He didn't make it. Thus the surviving sister and father were filled with grief. Remember, I don't have a legendary dining hall nor anything of particular value around. They were miserable.

After a month of other unrelated work, I wondered if they would tantrum. The father was actually content, and had the thought "Cried on somebody in charge lately and felt a lot better afterwards." Odd. Then I noticed one of the kids in my unit list was conducting a meeting. Zooming in, I saw they were in the grand throne room. The King(Self-appointed, not the real king) and the kid whose mother and brother died were holding a meeting and when they were done, the same thought appeared in the kid.

 Awwwwww. Best. King. Ever.

So, what stories do you have?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Duke has discovered floorplans!
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:12:49 pm »
Alright, so I have noticed a lot of us look for architectural inspirations from all around us, because most of us make boring fortresses and we want megaprojects. So thanks to Stumbleupon, I managed to find a site for RPG floorplans.

 Linky

So yes, just sharing this resource. Share any links to sites that have inspirations for fortresses. I mean things that will help us plan, not just purdy architecture.

DF Gameplay Questions / Frame buffer and single buffer
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:47:05 am »

Alright, so with the tweaked release of DF (From this thread) has a few differences that are grand. They make DF run stupidly fast. However, I wish to know what exactly the new options FRAME_BUFFER and SINGLE_BUFFER do. As much as I want to make the tests myself as to how much speed they provide, it would be best to see what others think about these options.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A request, if it isn't too much...
« on: February 17, 2009, 12:01:45 pm »
Alright, so I am making a castle with Humans that is intended to look like something somebody would make, and not just a square with a few towers around it. So far it has been what, thirteen years now? Most things I want accomplished are somewhat finished, but there are a few projects I am somewhat bummed out about. Where the Church and Keep were fun to make, these things are growing more and more dreaded in my mind for no real reason.

So, I have a good 30x21 tile space to make a grand hall for the population to dine in. I might allow 35x21, but I want a lake inside the castle walls and what better entrance to a grand hall than over a lake? I have no ideas for what to do with this. That is where you guys come in. Could somebody come up with plans for a grand hall that will be constructed in such a space, and will only have a maximum of 3 z-levels of livable space?

Then there are the dungeons. I dunno if I even want to make them, but I know a proper castle needs them. A design for this(any size, really. Just nothing larger than 100x100 as I doubt humans could make something that large underground) would be grand.

Then there is the other lake outside the fortress entrance, with the now-sealed mines underneath the lakebed that was once the entrance to the mine. Water appears to fill the moats to an extent, but once it reaches the lake it just spreads out and dissipates. I need to devise a system of making water fill the lake without anything particularly large or obstructing the landscape. This is a human castle, not a dwarven pumping project.

That is all. You shall hear more of Healedabby once I get the lake filled and the grand hall finished.

 Edit:
3Dwarf pictures! There are about ten of them, so bear with me here.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The front gate. Didn't know what angle to do this in, but I learned two things from this shot: Bridges mess everything under them up and fortifications/windows don't show correctly. Still, you get an idea.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another angle of the front gate. If the ramps only led into the walls, it would look perfect.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The great hall! again, with windows missing this doesn't look right. Whatever. I like how it looks rounded. I might take away the roof spikes though.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Inside the Great Hall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I might consider extending the moat for this barracks tower. Also, the internal garden looks awesome in 3Dwarf.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Basement, where humans learn to swim and their armor is stored.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Manor. I like how the courtyards and nobility housing turned out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Magicians tower. I might want to make it taller next time I make a tower.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The church, with a proper roof. Due to the constraints of 3Dwarf and the measurements of the walls, it looks terrible inside. Whatever again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Lake, because I can.

DF Gameplay Questions / Grass, indoors?
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:51:14 am »

Alright, so I'm working on my Human Castle challenge, and I noticed something strange. I have a short fat tower that will house my military and their training grounds, and I figure a dirt training area would be best. So I don't pave it over.

Then summer hit, and as usual the grass that grew over the winter dies out. That is, except for the grass on the bottom floor of my tower.

 Now my questions:
-Are segments with with constructions over them supposed to have grass grow?
-Is it supposed to keep plants from dieing to the summer heat?

I assume it might have something to do with moisture or something, I don't know. Might put this under bug reports if this is not the intended behavior. I guess constructions insulate like the underground.

Other Games / A New Zero
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:15:05 am »
Interesting little thing. Everything is procedurally generated, keeping the size of this game small. Basically, you hot into wither a rocket boat, gun boat or bomber and try to blow op the opponents base. Seems a little bland now, but mind you with some friends and lots of players this could be frantic.

 Website

Would be interesting to see some B12 players on there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Proprotions of tiles
« on: January 16, 2009, 04:43:59 pm »

Alright, so I decided to plan out a fortress ahead of time in paint. Grand, this will be perfectly lain out! Of course, in order to properly portray such visions I need to find a site suitable for such plans. To do that, I need a site just the right size for these plans.

So, what is the proportion of tiles from the local map to the actual embark area? How many tiles are in a 1x1 embark area?

Another good question has to do with farming. How can I destroy the various stone tiles on the top of soil layers? Oh, you know what I'm talking about. Boulders, pebbles, just plain stone floor tiles on a soil layer. Gets in the way of all my surface farms. What can I do short of finding an area with two layers of soil and channeling into the second layer?
