So I just reached the first winter in my one tile island fort and am getting a stream of reports about crundles.

"Crundle has slipped into depression...", "Crundle is stumbling around obliviously!" and "Crundle is throwing a tantrum!"

Who knew crundles were so prone to mental illness.

DF General Discussion / The most terrible curse
« on: February 27, 2012, 01:06:51 am »
"In the late autumn of 208, Nomar cursed the reptile man Stroso Archbold the Hide of Deer to assume the form of a gecko-like monster every full moon in Spunshovel."

So the lizard dude is cursed to become a lizard dude every full moon.

Interestingly enough, Nomar Minecaves was most often depicted as a female draltha associated with caverns.

DF Modding / Neoskel mods - UBER ADVENTURER RETURNS
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:32:54 am »
I'm working on a few minor creature mods that should hopefully expand on vanilla DF without changing the feel of it too much. I'll compile them in this thread as i work on them.

***UPDATED FOR DF 2014***
I also currently have a special 'adventurer' creature which is completely and utterly overpowered and intended for going on omnicidal massacres. Lost a bit of speed due to the combat/attack speed split, but still faster than anything else. No longer has silly materials for organs, so no more heart of gold or nerves of steel. Can fly and has natural edged attacks, also has multiple legendary levels in all combat and movement skills.

  • Embark on area that is only partially an evil biome.
  • Set up entrance and death traps in non-evil biome. (preferably non-edged traps)
  • Wait for goblin/elf/etc. attack.
  • Collect corpses. (keep corpses in non-evil stockpile for a while for skeletons)
  • Place corpses in walled off part of evil biome where only exit is through cage traps.
  • Collect caged zombies/skeletons.
  • Place and uncage zombies/skeletons as wanted. (in crypts, traps, etc.)
  • ? ??? ?
  • Profit! Necromancy!

DF General Discussion / Anyone have any custom Arena Mode maps?
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:02:42 pm »
It's kinda a pain to edit the arena mode map, and i botched mine up trying to make a round tower in the middle of a flat plain. Does anyone have any custom arena mode maps they want to share? Or, even better, know something i can use to make editing the text file easier?

DF General Discussion / On Glaciers and Cooking

You know how you can't make all liquid meals anymore in the newer version? I just made a few all milk roasts. Completely bug-free too.

(i'd post a screenshot but i play on a pretty big resolution and you can't read it if i scale it down.)

"This is a stack of 10 frozen yak's milk roast. The ingredients are minced frozen reindeer's milk and minced frozen yak's milk."

Yeah. Apparently as long as the ingredient is in a solid state, it can be used as the 'base' of the meal. Fun stuff.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Civless human settlements
« on: November 15, 2010, 04:24:40 am »
So i generated a world where the only human civ got wiped out by elves. I wanted to see how that would affect the sites so i made an elf adventurer to go check it out. Of course i spawned on the opposite side of the map and got torn up by bogeymen attempted to get there (since there are NO actual elf/dwarf sites to speak of). After repeating that a couple more times i went with a demigod dwarf axe-savant. So many bogeyman bisections/decapitations.  :D

Anyways once i did finally get there there were no actual ruins, the hamlets and towns pretty much exactly the same as if there was still a civ, except that 'there is no capital' and the coins are from a period of no rule. I think the local government groups were still intact, but i didn't check. So i did some quests for the family-less spawned-from-midair humans killing loads of night creature spouses. Turns out that once you've done a certain number of quests for a given town/hamlet they'll stop giving you quests by responding "Isn't that enough?" when you ask if you can be of service. I think it's because they have no capital/civ leader to redirect you to for further quests.

So after dinking around killing things and buying/selling all sorts of stuff, i decided to go get more quests from the nearby fortresses. So i show up at a fortress and notice odd behaviour in the inhabitants. Firstly, all the warriors are wrestlers and have no clothes. Secondly, they're all hostile to me. I then proceed to get kicked in the head and die from a mild concussion.

So civ-less hamlets/towns still spawn friendly villagers and fortresses spawn hostile wrestlers. I think it might have something to do with fortresses not being attached to local governments. I suppose they could be a good unlimited source of weapons training if you have steel armor and make sure not to get swarmed. I'm gonna have to try and gen a similar situation again to see if the fortresses still spawn lords (i compulsively delete worlds when i'm done with them...Oops.).

It's kinda incongruous with legends mode where
no one seems to be able to kill any mega or semimegabeast that they're such pushovers in adventure mode.

I fought a Hydra with an axedwarf and chopped off 5 heads/necks before it could lay a tooth on me (it quickly died of bloodloss). In a different game with a human swordsman my guy near insta-crippled a dragon by stabbing it in all four legs in the first five hits, breaking the bones. In fact said dragon died from getting stabbed in the legs for some reason. 'Struck down' instead of 'bled to death', and all i ever hit was it's legs and a foot, weird.

This was all with starting stats and gear, with no better than bismuth bronze weapons. Semimegas are also pushovers. I haven't gotten down to -redacted- with a non-modded adventurer yet, they'll probably be a bit more challenging with all the poison gas and junk.

Edit: All my guys follow the following skill formula:

DF General Discussion / What happened to ratmen?
« on: April 22, 2010, 11:10:07 pm »
I thought something was missing. I've only just realized that there are no ratmen in the latest version of DF. I can't think of any reason for them not to be in and  don't remember hearing about this before either.  did a quick search for ratmen on the forums but there was nothing forthcoming.

I've always felt that ratmen had a certain unique charm about them so i kinda miss them. And while it should be fairly trivial to mod them back into my game i really want them back in vanilla DF.

Title speaks for itself.

To elaborate, i've started a fort of 7 woodcutter/axedwarves on a cave (part of a personal no-digging challenge). So a season in, i get sieged by rhesus macaques and thus activate my starting seven confident that they'll quickly sort out the monkey menace. Their uniform consists of a copper shield and a copper axe and since they're all woodcutters they're all already holding copper axes.

So it starts off ok, those already near the monkeys start chasing and hacking them up. Then they all drop their axes and those indoors go and grab their shields. No one makes any moves to pick up any of the axes, except for the monkeys.

A rhesus macaque has stolen a copper battleaxe!

Much swearing occurs and i reload the save. Which happens to be right when the monkeys are next to the entrance, so there's no time to sort stuff out.

I try several times, but they only make moves to pick up the axes once i change their uniform after they activate. And of course they won't do anything of the sort while there's a monkey next to them.

Sometimes dwarves can be perfectly infuriating.

DF Bug Reports / [40d] Return of the 'many fluffy wamblers'
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:57:23 pm »
So i've come across this bug/phenomenon again: non-[VERMIN_MICRO] vermin (specifically fluffy wamblers) being shown as a swarm. This time i didn't bring any cats, so i got a trapper to catch the 'swarm' for science. After being caught, it turned into a single fluffy wambler.

This leads me to believe that the bug isn't that wamblers are swarming, but that single wamblers are erroneously being displayed as being 'many fluffy wamblers'.

I'll add a save pre-catching inna minnit.

DF General Discussion / Interesting DF dream
« on: July 21, 2009, 05:01:44 pm »
Ok, so i had a blatantly DF based dream the other day. It went like this:
I had my fortress all dug out and built already, for some reason it had uncovered magma channels running through parts of it. Then i built this free-floating machine which was basically a huge vat of magma with a nozzle on the bottom. I had the machine floated over the place where my magma channels originated and dumped extra magma on top of it, so it overflowed. Then a tiny dwarf (about a third the size of a regular dwarf) wearing a cool metal/fire imp leather diving suit thing shows up in a tiny metal speedboat thing and kinda pulls the overflowing magma in a particular direction while riding on top of it. So the little mini-dwarf and the magma make a beeline towards a particular dwarf. The best part? The target dwarf is purple.

I had a dream about DF noble removal. Wow.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New challenge fort idea: Ice Fortress
« on: May 07, 2009, 02:39:06 pm »
This is the result of my appreciation for glacier sites, and sitting up all night figuring out a way to produce water in such a location.

So here's the idea: Embark on a glacier site, preferably a completely flat area of land ice. Build an entire fortress out of ice. And i don't mean build in the traditional sense, i mean cast a huge fortress out of ice, like you would with obsidian. Mine and smooth out all the rooms. Engrave to taste. Fill in all temporary dwellings/storage areas once finished and move everything into the ice palace.

Requirements: Magma, strangely enough. You'll need it to produce water and keep it liquid until it is where you want it.

Lots of initial building materials for all the scaffolding.

A 'not-too-cold' temperature so that merchants don't die on arriving at your depot. It is also required for your dwarves to accept rooms in the ice fortress.

Bonus points for: Having an aquifer. They're really hard to find in glaciers.

Making all the furniture ('cept beds) out of microcline. Major mucho bonus points for making all the furniture out of clear glass.

Guard polar bears. More points for breeding them and making all your clothes out of polar bear leather/fur (when fur is in).

Bulding giant statues to guard the gates out of ice. Bonus bonus points for casting them out of ice instead.

Smoothing out a 'road' on the glacier leading to the fortress entrance, more for lining it with something made out of ice. Particularly for cast pillars of ice that have been smoothed and engraved.

Having a defensive measure that involves freezing attackers.

Having a defensive measure that involves dropping cast blocks of ice on attackers' heads.

Capturing enemies in cage traps, taking their armor/weapons and freezing them (not in their cage) in a block of ice in a large gallery made specifically for this purpose. Major mucho bonus points if you engrave the resultant pillars and savescum until each pillar has an engraving depicting that particular goblin's death.

Having a Queen rule your civ and having her move to your ice fortress. If she has an ice/cold related name you must be cheating somehow. Please let me know how.  :P

Having something ice/cold related as your local symbol.

DF General Discussion / Forum Short Term Memory Loss
« on: March 25, 2009, 12:27:32 pm »
I've noticed something, lurking on these forums for quite a while.

People keep bringing up the same questions over and over. The people who answer the questions don't know what they're talking about and give wrong information. Things established months ago are forgotten and questioned anew. It's quite tiresome to watch.

Stray cat cancels store item in stockpile: Too injured.

Disgust. Discuss. Examples, solutions, whatever.
